Questionsssss

posted by Kelly-Kels on 7:50 am

Hello everyone. Okay firstly i would like to know a few things. I have a small appetite in the morning. I don't really want to eat breakfast but i heard that not eating breakfast causes weight gain. I don't want that to happen to me so i planned to eat something light. Can milk alone or a small fruit or even half a muesli/granola bar kick start metabolism and also keep them running fast (since i am still eating "something" for breakfast). Next, I know that we're suppose to eat something after we exercise so that we would not gain weight or eat up our muscle? I'm gonna just drink milk after workout (which is in the morning, milk for breakfast after workout). Would it be fine?
Lastlyyyyy! How long would it take me to get a flat belly? I'm 15 turning 16 female. I'm 5'2, 95lbs. I'm not planning to loose weight but i definitely want to burn off some of my belly fats. I know it would take years to burn off belly fats (if you have layers of them), but for me... i do not really have that much. I have no fat pinch at the back and the side. Just a little flabby-fatty stomach in the front. Not obvious under clothes tho. I wanted to get rid of it so i could look good in bikini. My waist is 25 inches (normal) and when i breathe/blow out to my extend, i could get about 27 inches waist. How long does it take to get a flat belly, about 23 inches if i try to eat around 1200 calories a day (i'm not gonna starve myself!), try not eat eat after 7pm (at least a glass of milk or fruit if i'm hungry), pig out like crazy once a week only and exercise 3-4 times a week (i'm a busy person). And should i do sit-ups everyday? I heard it would make your stomach looks bigger because of the fats above the muscle.

You are getting more into loosing BF% then actually losing weight. You will be hard pressed to do this by following the little things you mentioned. (Eating 1st thing in the morning etc...) At 16 your metabolism should be going almost nonstop anyway. I would say you need to take a hard look at processed sugars/fat and the health aspect of what you’re eating more than how you are eating. Trying to get a low BF will take dedication to cut all the processed food out along with a tough exercise regime and is beyond my knowledge. Most of us are either over weight or trying to maintain a healthy weight.

You should try posting this in the forums where there are more people who can direct you better.

Really Tough...sad face

posted by jessilynnb21 on 3:37 pm

So this week has been really tough. I am in college and returned last week. I knew eating right would be tough but the toll of not eating enough calories and being able to find nothing in the cafeteria has nearly brought me to tears. I inform everyone that I am counting and they are all supportive but a dressingless salad everyday for six months is daunting. I ate chickfila yesterday after an hour and a half of playing soccer cause I needed something that I would not get upset over. After almost no oil in a month, my favorite food tasted gross. Hopefully next week will be better. Here's to Hoping!!

by freyja5683 on Aug 17, 2011 at 5:49 am

Why can't you have dressing, everything in moderation. Is there a way that you can make something instead of getting it in the cafeteria? That way you will know what you are eating and you can still count?

by screaminz2002 on Aug 17, 2011 at 6:40 am

You can always get you one of those mini fridges and a convection oven for your dorm room ( I am guessing thats where you are staying). There isn't a whole lot that can't be made now days with those two things.

by jessilynnb21 on Aug 17, 2011 at 12:52 pm

I pay $2500 for a meal plan, I should at least get something out of it. I go to an old school so ovens aren't allowed in the rooms. I am an RA so I have a microwave but paying so much for food and then going to the store and paying more sucks. I have some dressing some days but that does not resolve the conflict of salad for 360 meals. Not only is that not healthy but it does not even sound good.

by freyja5683 on Aug 18, 2011 at 6:26 am

Wow, that does suck, let me think on it and see if I can some up with something.

by sweetiebv on Aug 20, 2011 at 12:04 pm

I don't know what is in your cafeteria, but you can eat quite a few things and still be considered healthy (it is still about moderation any way you look at it). You don't have to eat salad necessarily or go without dressing. It is just about controlling yourself.
I know you don't want to buy food, but just little snacks like carrots, dark chocolate (which is good for you, but you have to reduce calories in other areas) nuts (almonds, walnut pistacios ect) and really any other fruits (apples, peaches, strawberries!) or veggies are all useful in not only feeling full, but also in getting healthy! Making sure to exercise will burn off a little extra eating as well.
Look at it as the glass is half full instead of empty...there are some really delicious things you can eat instead of all the processed really bad for you stuff.
I have eaten in a cafeteria while living in dorm before I feel your pain, however I know they do have things to eat as long as you eat in moderation.

How to break a diet plateau

posted by freyja5683 on 9:47 am

Beating the Diet Plateau
Try these tips for moving the scale in the right direction again — you may not even need all of them to start seeing a difference:

Ruthlessly clean up your diet. “I have the four deadly sins of food: butter, cheese, fried food, and sugar. These things will keep you from making progress. Examine your diet to make sure you’re being honest with yourself. You lose the right to complain if you aren’t eating what you are supposed to,” says Guillory.
Skip the alcohol. Alcohol not only adds calories to your diet, but it effectively slows your metaboli sm and reduces your motivation to work out and diet.
Go low-glycemic. If you still have refined carbs in your diet, get rid of them, especially before a workout. Eating a meal containing low-glycemic carbs about three hours before a workout results in more fat burned than a meal containing refined carbs.
Vary your exercise routine. “If you’re coming to the gym and you’re doing the same thing every time, change your workout,” says Guillory. Run today, lift weights tomorrow, swim on the next day, take a group exercise class the day after.
Try high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Working out at different levels of intensity is thought to increase weight loss. Guillory has her clients weight-train for about 20 minutes, exercise at 85 percent of their maximum heart rate for about 10 minutes, do more weight training for about 10 minutes, and then finish with moderate cardio exercises.
Strength train. Use weight training to build muscle. Each pound of muscle burns about 50 calories a day at rest. According to a national survey of more than 6,000 adults, about 19 percent of people who were successful with weight loss included weight training in their workouts.
Use a heart rate monitor. “It keeps you honest about the intensity of your workout,” says Guillory. Figure out your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. Target your workouts so your heart rate stays between 65 and 85 percent of your maximum most of the time.
Drink water. If you are not drinking enough water during the day, your body may be retaining water, adding to the numbers on the scale. Guillory recommends consuming about half your body weight in ounces of water every day if you work out a lot (more if you’re outside in the heat). A 145-pound woman should drink about 73 ounces of water.
Exercise for more than 30 minutes every day. People who exercise at least 30 minutes every day are more successful with weight loss. Try to get in at least this much exercise — and increasing the time you spend working out every day will increase the caloric burn.
Get the people in your life on board. Most people don’t sabotage your diet on purpose, says Guillory, but their food-related acts of love could be undermining your weight loss.

by screaminz2002 on Aug 15, 2011 at 4:49 pm

This is great advice. I am in so many of those categories it's not even funny. Heres to another 15 hour day with no exercise. The best thing about today is I am to tired to stop for food.. This whole week looks very bleak.

Bad day yesterday - help!

posted by sshepeck on 7:30 am

Hi folks,
I am about two weeks into a diet & exercise program, and I've been quite good about staying on it faithfully...until yesterday.  I attended a party and consumed a fair amount of beer (Miller Lite), and then late last night I ate some things that, well, let's just say weren't on my diet plan.  I didn't go all out and totally blow it, but today I feel pretty guilty.  I guess I could use some help / motivation on how to "get back on the horse", so to speak.  I've lost 12 pounds so far, and I would hate to fall off now.   Help!

by screaminz2002 on Aug 15, 2011 at 5:51 am

Today is a new day and you have to look at the big picture. You are making a life style change and not some fad diet for a couple of weeks. I would bet you are going to have days like this years from now too. Changing the way you live day to day is never easy. These things take time. You are also only human with the same drinking buddies you had before starting this journey. I have the same problem just about every weekend too. Just keep trying to do the right thing. Moderation gets easier and easier ( I hope  ) but don't beat yourself up over it. It's just a mountain to climb and we all slip on the way up. I figure if a year from now I am still stuck on 180 and drinking a case every weekend then I have a problem. I would think the same applies to you.

by freyja5683 on Aug 15, 2011 at 8:18 am

I agree the info that you were given about is pretty much spot on! Today is a new day and do your best to make good choices and that is all you can do.

by sshepeck on Aug 16, 2011 at 3:24 am

Thanks for the comments, both of you!  Had a great day yesterday and am solidly back on track.
Screaminz, it's cool that you responded with first-hand experience about dealing with "drinking buddies", etc - that's something I will have to get used to dealing with.  I'm starting to believe that an 80/20 philosophy might be the way to approach things realistically; you know, if you are working hard on maintaining a healthy diet and exercise life style 80% of the time, you can be sensibly lenient with yourself the other 20%.  Parties, wedding receptions, vacations, holidays, work schedules - all can present major obstacles to staying on track.  Kick ass the majority of the time, and maybe it's OK not to freak out about the occasional lapse...in other words, keep the big picture in mind.  Do you think this is a good mind set to have, in your experience?

by freyja5683 on Aug 16, 2011 at 6:56 am

I think that is a great mindset to have as this is something you will have to deal with your entire life, it's not just for the next few weeks. I love to have a drink every night but I don't give in. I find the everything in moderation is the way to go, I love ice cream but I know that I can only have some every so often now not every night and that I have to portion it out or I will over eat, once we have these things under control it is normally smooth sailing from there. I recently had to cut back my calories by 250-300 each day in order to see the scale go down I was at a plateau for too long and I have to say after a week I think that I am going to be okay and see a loss this week. But I am still having to take it one day at a time.

Work blues

posted by screaminz2002 on 5:43 am

Does anyone else see a link between exercise and work? When things were smooth at work I was starting off my day with 30 minutes of on demand routines and either running or biking at night. Now that work has got stupid crazy and stressful, I can no longer wake up in time to do anything in the morning.. It's like the dread of coming back into the office overrides the enjoyment of exercising? I even find myself not tracking properly or taking huge shortcuts on logging food. I can't even remember the last time I stopped in here to read blogs.. To many hours at work in the last few weeks for sure.

by freyja5683 on Aug 12, 2011 at 7:14 am

Yes I see the link all the time, but I still try to make even 10 mintues to do something just for me. I am greedy that way. Sometimes I do squats in the ladies room or I keep two 16 oz water bottles in there and I do tricep extensions or bicep curls. It makes me feel good, if able give it a try.

by Summerdove on Aug 12, 2011 at 6:09 pm

I absolutely see the link, and I think its basically stress.  I've experienced something similar.  When my work schedule is easy & flexible, I'm looking forward to working out and stay on the straight narrow with my food journaling & eating.  But when my work schedule is crazy busy and I'm stressing, I'm more interesting in eating things I'm not supposed to, and can never seem to find time to work out...and don't really want to.  I'd like to be able to strike a balance and keep myself on my program, despite stress.  Because, really stress is part of life.  That's the trick, though.  My hope is to get in such a habit & routine with healthiness that I'm able to hold to it, even when stressed.  Not there yet, but hope to be soon.

by screaminz2002 on Aug 13, 2011 at 8:49 am

Taking a break from sitting at the kitchen table this weekend trying to play catchup from last week. From the looks of things I will spend next week still trying to catch up. I apologize for not getting back in here yesterday and I appreciate the motivational replies.
I still make time to do something in the evening. I have pretty much told everyone involved in my projects that it's nonnegotiable. Just can't seem to get motivated in the morning anymore. I also have gained 2lbs this week. Major bummer all around.

Hello Guys!
I just joined the group and I'm so motivated to loose weight! I made a lifestyle change recently in mid June.  I have lost 13 lbs in all.  However, these past two weeks I have stopped loosing weight.  I notice that my clothes fit better and definitely see the change in my appearance.  Is there something I'm doing wrong?  I work out 5 times a week now.  Any suggestions?

by freyja5683 on Aug 10, 2011 at 11:26 am

Keep at it, obviously what you were doing is working. Sometimes we all just hit a plateau. You could try ramping up your calorie intake for a day or two by about 200 calories and see if that might just jog you body back into losing mode. It's the best suggestion I have for you, hope something changes for you soon.

Small Goal Reached

posted by dimarsh on 4:55 am

In May, I had set a small goal to get out of the 170's by the end of August. And I acheived that goal with a weigh in at 169 last night. Just the tip of the iceberg, but it felt really good to visually see it on the scale.

It was a message I read over and over again on these groups that made the difference. Keep the big picture in mind, and make small goals to get there. It was easy to lose the first 25 lbs, and then the battle to maintain that loss has raged on for 18 months.

Thank you for your support, encouraging words and weight loss tips. It has an effect on those of us that log in to see what you have to say for the day.

So a big hug to all of you!

Heart monitor recommendation?

posted by PaulaTS on 8:07 am

Hi all!  I am trying to get back into my diet and exercise routine.  I want to buy a heart monitor but have no idea which one might work best.  I need to be able to make sure I'm getting the maximum out of my cardio time.  Does anyone here have any recommendations?  I am 5'3", and 171 lbs; my goal weight is 130 lbs.  I am 48 years old.  I'm really getting panicky about my weight.  Thanks to all.   Paula

I have a timex one bought off of amazon that I enjoy and believe it works quite well besides it was the best one for a decent price. Here is the brand name off the amazon website if you want to check it out.

" How your day goes is all about your perception and positivity. If you have it in mind that nothing can stop you, it simply won't...just believe and follow through with this mindset."
Written in 2011 by Ted Rogers --- Kentucky

by Summerdove on Aug 4, 2011 at 2:24 pm

I especially like the quote by Ted Rogers.  It's all about the mindset....which I really don't have at the moment.  I'm up three pounds thiis week, due to eating my way through stress.  Not sure how to reverse my mindset, and I don't know why i'm allowing myself to fall off track like this.  I've started a strength training regimen this week and have been jogging, and have worked out all but one day.  But it's not making a dent due to my eating. I know I tend to gain a bit when I start a new workout plan, but I know it's due to my eating.  Just frustrated with myself!! Not gonna give up, but just very discouraged right now.

by freyja5683 on Aug 5, 2011 at 9:25 am

Summerdove, my best suggestion would be to try and get rid of all the food you snack on that is not good for you. That way the temptation is not there, and if it's not there you can't eat it. I have been eating pretty well but the scale still isn't moving much at all :(

by Summerdove on Aug 6, 2011 at 7:01 am

Thanks....good advice. Will be sure not to bring any no-goods into the house.  Gonna keep persevering with the workout. I know the scale will eventually move in the right direction for both of us soon.  Thanks!!

Think I gained two pounds in one night... just by indulging in pretzels & cheese sauce at the movies! Really bad, and I know it, yet did it anyway.  Need some motivation. Don't know why I'm sabotaging myself like this, after a fairly decent week of working out and eating.

by jessilynnb21 on Jul 30, 2011 at 11:52 am

Indulging is okay sometimes, don't get down on yourself because you ate something that you are now regretting. Next time just indulge in moderation eat less and you will still be satisfied.

50 Things you can do TODAY to improve your health

posted by freyja5683 on 10:29 am

50 Things You Can do TODAY to Improve your Health
Tuesday, July 26, 2011  |  From Girl Get Strong

Most health and fitness advice is full of don’ts: Don’t eat after 7, don’t eat fast food, don’t enjoy anything you eat, ever again. That negative connotation is why people view fitness and weight loss as a punishment, or something to be white-knuckled through.
Lasting change is made when you build a habit- and habits are made by systematically DOING something repeatedly until it becomes ingrained. Depriving yourself will not build habits, being proactive will.
So instead of pummeling you with more “don’ts” to make you feel like a failure, here are 50 things you can DO, today, that will improve your health. Pick one a day to try out, or choose one and repeat it everyday until it becomes a habit, but either way, these little “dos” will boost your health the second you do them.

Drink a glass of water before each meal to hit your 64 oz of water a day recommendation.
Revisit your goals. Take a few seconds each morning to revisit what it is you want to achieve.
Start your morning with a good, long stretch to get the blood flowing.
Pick a mantra you can repeat to yourself that will push you through barriers.
Remind yourself why you are worth it.
Add fruit slices to your water for an extra splash of nutrients and flavor.
Take the stairs wherever you see them.
Name one thing you really, truly love about yourself.
Buy a new workout outfit to get excited about the gym, and your new bod.
Be a role model to someone else. Order a healthy lunch while with a friend or invite your neighbor out for a walk.
Add 1 veggie to each meal today.
Instead of throwing the dog outside to go potty, take Fido for a walk around the block.
Do 10 push-ups every time you check your Facebook.
Replace your office chair with a stability ball.
Try a new, healthy recipe.
Brush your teeth after dinner to avoid cavities and cut cravings.
Do a 1 minute plank. Right now.
Read a health related article.
Make a vision board to motivate you on your journey.
Eat slowly and deliberately.
Go to bed 1 hour early.
Teach someone a healthy fact they didn’t know before.
Do crunches during the commercial breaks of your favorite TV show.
Sign up for a race and start training!
Each time before you eat, ask yourself, “How hungry am I really?”
Plan out all of your meals for the day- and stick to it!
Set an alarm for your workout, and actually workout when it goes off.
Make a motivating playlist of your favorite songs- and use them.
Buy your favorite fitness magazine for extra motivation. Read it on the treadmill.
Try one new exercise you’ve never done before.
Eat! Every two to three hours, like clockwork.
Try a fruit or veggie that you’ve never eaten before.
Try a new class at your gym you’ve never tried before.
Swap fitness DVDs with a friend to spice up your routine.
Take a multivitamin- if your doctor says it’s OK.
Work out in the morning instead of at night to boost your calorie burn all day long.
Trade your steady state cardio session for a hardcore HIIT workout.
Up your weights a few pounds.
Cook your pasta to al dente. The softer you cook your pasta, the higher the glycemic index.
Go grocery shopping for healthy foods. Stick to the perimeter.
Lighten up your favorite comfort food with healthy swaps.
Buy in season produce.
Check your BMI or body fat percentage.
Eat only raw foods for a full day.
Take a deep breathe. And then another.
Unplug during your next workout. Skip the iPod or TV and engage in your workout.
Apply sunscreen when exercising outdoors- even in winter.
Get fitted for proper running shoes. Most stores will do this for free.
Workout outside. Not only will you burn calories, but the fresh air boosts mood.
Try two of these healthy ideas in one day!

Check in daily here! Just take 1 day at a time and remember that it takes a bit to establish a routine/habit. You can do it!

by freyja5683 on Jul 26, 2011 at 6:01 am

There is no quick fix it is a lifestyle change and you have to work at it each and every day. I have been here a while now and I am finally seeing the results but it has been a long slow process but it works if you keep with it. Make smaller goals and work towards them that way you are not disappointed at how far you may still have to go. We are here to help motivate eachother, I wish you the best of luck.

by cwatt001 on Jul 26, 2011 at 7:25 am

I have found that changing the way you think about food can really help (Even the way you think won't change over night). If you can shift your intention from losing weight to just being healthy, it may be easier to say "No" to the foods that are controling you. If you eat foods that are alive, whole and natural, in turn you become alive, whole and natural. If you eat food that are over processed and stripped of all nutrients, that is what you become, over processed and toxic. No matter what, just remember that every struggle becomes your strength at it's turning point. Every day you get through, makes you that much stronger for the next day.

by bethy87 on Jul 26, 2011 at 3:02 pm

that is a very good reply cwatt! I really like that and I completely agree!

Just Getting Started

posted by jessilynnb21 on 8:51 pm

As I was about to check in with security at the airport my dad challenged me to lose more weight then my mom. He said we would do it by percentage. We all decided we could have our weigh in on December 15, 2011 which is about a week after I return home from college. She weighed around 30 pounds less then me on that day. That was June 20th. I have lost about 15 pounds in the last month but I don't want to fall off the wagon. My father and grandmother both have diabetes so he is worried that I will have it if I continue to gain weight. My lowest weigh in ever was when I was 16 and played soccer almost everyday. Since then I have had 3 knee surgeries and gained 80 pounds. I am 20 years old. Yesterday I got upset because I made it below 200 pounds and when I checked my weight at night I was at like 205. It was upsetting and disheartening because I had been staying between 200-203 from wake up until bedtime. I feel that maybe it will be helpful to join a group of people who are trying to take the same steps as me so I do not feel quite as disheartened next time. I used to drink at least one soda a day most of the time two. I have not had any soda (diet or otherwise) since July 4th and I am hoping that I can keep this going. Most of my friends at school do not drink soda but they don't help when it comes to what I should and should not eat. I hope that being a part of something striving towards the same goals as me will be helpful. Can't wait to kick my moms butt (in the most loving way possible)!!!

First of all congratulations on accepting your father's challenge.  It is sometimes tough to accept them from our parents.  I say this as a daughter with a lifelong weight issue and as a parent that worries about my children.
Reading about the disheartening scale movement made me want to remind you that we all weigh different at different times of the day.  Choose a day and a time once a week.  Don't let the scale become the obsession, learn to celebrate non-scale victories as well.  There will be times when you gain (muscle mass/ or bloating). On those occassions celebrate what you have accomplished.
Another tool we have here is the summer weight challenge.  We are in the 2nd week.  Just email your information to Carolyn to join,
On the note about soda,  I have been soda free for 4+ years.  It is hard at first.  I won't lie, there are times I really want that carbonation feeling, but I can't give in.,  I drink lots of water, iced tea, crystallight, and coffee.  Once in a great while if I am out I may opt for a non-carbonated light lemonade.
Friends at times don't understand the concepts of eat this not that.  It is not because of ignorance it is simply because we can do this tomorrow.  If you have a close friend, ask them to remind you in a nice way to help you stay on track.   When eating out with friends, see if someone will share.  Saves calories and money.
To help with late night studying and eating try dried wasabi green peas or dried soybeans.  They both are high in protein and lowfat.  It helps in the crunch and munch mode.

I hope this is helpful and good luck,
Sharman

Ready to get fit

posted by AprilSmith on 6:55 am

I just joined the group. I have gained about 25 lbs since around Thanksgiving, due to stress (going through a divorce, and my 12 year old dogs are a big worry as they get sick a lot now...), not working out anymore, eating more, etc. I need to stop the madness and get back on track! I used to be very good about staying fit, would run 4 miles a day 5 days a week, watched my portion size and that was really all I had to do. That was about 3-4 years ago. Now, as I am the heaviest I have ever  been, I am depressed and feeling bad about myself, especially since all the clothes that I own that used to be slightly loose are now VERY tight. I am not by any means obese, but I am overweight, according to my doctor and all the measurements here on livestrong.com. I have to get back on track! And I am determined and willing to stay committed to it. I am glad I found a group to join, looking forward to sharing my progress. I also think that tracking what I eat and seeing it "on paper" has already helped me to make better decisions about what I eat, and how much. I also like that I can track my fitness here too, which also motivates me to keep it up.

This site is great, and the best thing about it are the people here.  I have been on and off, and while I have kept a good amount of weight off, those same 20-30 lbs keep finding their way back on me from time to time :)
Live is a journey, and many times we end up with turns in the road we could not have forseen, and sometimes when those turns are just too much we lose sight of things and put that weight on.  Just keep focused, and balance your time in your life, and you'll get though it and feel better for having endured.
