Ready to get fit

posted by AprilSmith on 6:55 am

I just joined the group. I have gained about 25 lbs since around Thanksgiving, due to stress (going through a divorce, and my 12 year old dogs are a big worry as they get sick a lot now...), not working out anymore, eating more, etc. I need to stop the madness and get back on track! I used to be very good about staying fit, would run 4 miles a day 5 days a week, watched my portion size and that was really all I had to do. That was about 3-4 years ago. Now, as I am the heaviest I have ever  been, I am depressed and feeling bad about myself, especially since all the clothes that I own that used to be slightly loose are now VERY tight. I am not by any means obese, but I am overweight, according to my doctor and all the measurements here on livestrong.com. I have to get back on track! And I am determined and willing to stay committed to it. I am glad I found a group to join, looking forward to sharing my progress. I also think that tracking what I eat and seeing it "on paper" has already helped me to make better decisions about what I eat, and how much. I also like that I can track my fitness here too, which also motivates me to keep it up.

This site is great, and the best thing about it are the people here.  I have been on and off, and while I have kept a good amount of weight off, those same 20-30 lbs keep finding their way back on me from time to time :)
Live is a journey, and many times we end up with turns in the road we could not have forseen, and sometimes when those turns are just too much we lose sight of things and put that weight on.  Just keep focused, and balance your time in your life, and you'll get though it and feel better for having endured.

Ready to Conquer!

posted by Summerdove on 12:54 pm

Hi Everybody,
After reading all the inspiring posts of everyone here, and their slow and steady success towards weight loss, I knew this was the group for me.  Over the last 7 - 8 months, I've gained about 30 lbs, which I attribute to stress, worry and anxiety over some issues in my life.  I'm not kidding anyone, because I know these are just excuses and that these things will always be present to some degree.  And that you have to develop new habits, and have tools in place to be prepared.  What makes me discouraged, is that I'm a weight loss counselor, which I became when I dropped 80 pounds over 1.5 years ago.  However, now my clients are seeing me live out their worse fear, and I'm no longer the example.  I've been trying to figure why I'm having trouble getting my head back in the game - you know what I mean...in the zone - where determination takes over and nothing is shaking my resolve.  Instead, I've let old patterns start to re-emerge, despite my best intentions, counseling of others, and mental notes to take my own advice. Today I weigh 195 lbs, up from a low of 166 last Autumn. I'm 5 ft 4.5 inches and my goal is to get my weight to 165, where I felt my best. My work out goal is 4 days a week for at least 45 minutes, which will be an improvement to my current, inconsistent 2 days per week.  I'm almost to the panick point (200 lbs!) and it's time for me to take a new approach, where I'm accountable to others, while being inspired by others. Glad to be here!

by GOSAN1980 on Jul 21, 2011 at 4:03 pm

welcome to the group!!! yes this an awsome group! we are here to help and encourage with your goals... dont panic just take it one at a time !

Thanks for the welcome, and the reminder to take it one day at a time.

by SharmanAsendorf on Jul 23, 2011 at 6:47 am

Most times the obvious to others is not to ourselves.  Remember to choose one small goal and go for it.  I have been struggling with 7 pounds for 6 weeks.  Not that it is my mini goal, but it is a part of the way.
I have felt absolutely welcomed here and have found some great inspiration and counseling.  Together we are strong even in our moments of weakness.
We can do it, You can do it!

5 tips for getting out of your own way

posted by freyja5683 on 11:45 am

5 Tips for Getting Out of Your Own Way
 1. Stop beating yourself up. We all beat ourselves up from time to time. Whether it’s com paring yourself unfairly to someone else, blaming yourself for some thing you can’t control or just taking yourself too seriously, even the most confident of us fall off the loving-yourself wagon occasionally. But loving yourself as you are right now is essential to getting out of your own way.
2. Find the right reason to lose weight. Sure, we all want to look good and fit in a certain pant size, but losing weight just for vanity’s sake leaves your resolve less than strong. Making change is hard, but connecting to the deeper, life-changing reasons why you want to lose the weight—more energy, better focus, ease of movement, improved health—is a far greater way to motivate yourself when the going gets tough.
3. Focus on the positive. We think “diet” is a four-letter word because, to us, it’s all about what you can’t have. So instead of focusing on the deprivation, swap your thinking to all of the fabulous things you can enjoy. Living a healthy life is about eating delicious and fresh foods that fuel your body and moving your body in a way that you love every day. What’s not to love about that? Life is good—savor it.
4. Get honest with yourself. If you find yourself emotional eating or self-sabotaging, take a deep breath and ask “Who am I really rebelling against?” Many times we choose unhealthy behaviors (almost unconsciously) in defiance of husbands, friends, family or co-workers in an attempt to gain control or have power. Or we are rebelling against ourselves because, deep down, we don’t feel like we’re worthy of the positive changes we’ve set forth to make. These issues could be left over from childhood or may show a lack of confidence in ourselves or an inability to emotionally express ourselves. No matter the reason, do some soul-searching to see what’s affecting you. Awareness—and loving understanding—is the only way to overcome it.
5. Don’t treat it like a fairy tale. When it comes to being healthy, there is no “happily ever after.” Living a healthy life is a balance, and it’s about consistency over time—every day for the rest of your life. So don’t think of your weight-loss plan as something that ends on a certain day or at a certain goal. Instead, view it as a journey where you get to keep learning, growing and changing!

thank you! i needed this today... i have been beating myself up and comparing myself to my slender friend.... but this article is very helpful...

by Summerdove on Jul 21, 2011 at 1:01 pm

So what I needed, because I've been steadily in my own way lately.  I can seriously apply all of these tips, but especially #4.  THANKS for getting me off to a good start in this group.

by pbramanti on Jul 22, 2011 at 6:11 am

Thank you.  I'm just starting to eat "clean" and, while I've always been active, I am working with a trainer who is mixing things up a bit to jolt my body into doing something different than the same old routine.  My issue is I have no patience and the weight is coming off so very slowly.  Some days I'm in tears after weighing myself and don't see a loss or even see a gain.  My trainer does not want me to weigh myself everyday but i think it helps keep me on track, although it can affect how my day goes depending if I am up or down.  How do you cope with the frustration of painfully slow progress or even no progress?  I'm at the gym 1-1/2 to 2 hours 6 days a week and am counting calories.  Frustration is what usually ends up sabotaging my weight loss.  HELP

by freyja5683 on Jul 22, 2011 at 8:49 am

I too weigh myself every day and this helps sometime and not on other days. I say do what helps you but do not beat yourself up. Sodium can play a big part in your weight as if you eat things higher in sodium today you may see a gain tomorrow as you tend to retain water. While this is not the case with everyone sometimes it helps to know this.
This is a great group and we are all here to support eachother, good luck in your journey.

Yes you need to eat so much more than that otherwise what you are burning off is not fat but could possibly be muscle. I think that you have a great idea make yourself a menu and set alarms to make sure that you eat something every few hrs if needed.

by samaral7 on Jul 21, 2011 at 7:44 am

You have to eat if you want to see results. Eating once a day will only put your body in survival mode and it will hang onto as much fat as it can and cannibalize muscle instead. I'm sure that is the opposite of what you want. If you have trouble keeping your calorie intake up you may want to reduce your workouts instead on those days.

I understand how you feel.  I ate the wrong things yesterday as well.  But I love your attitude - mentally preparing yourself to give 110% at bootcamp.  That's how you do it!  You could just wallow in self-pity and eat more today like "What's the point?" but you are keeping on, keeping on!  Way to go!

I seem to be in a spiral of food and overeating in calories the past week.  I am not frustrated but more dumbfounded with myself.  The reality is I am a food addict and I love to eat.  So I mentally needed to start saying eat this not that.  I am pleased with my self yesterday I stayed in my calorie goal.  I did sign up for the summer challenge, I am praying that it keeps me more motivated now that there is a competition.  I am thrilled with my overall progress heck I am upto walking every morning and feel guilty when I don't exercise.    Here is to starting fresh.   Sharman

Sharman,
We all struggle everyday, but you need to start thinking and knowing that you are worth the change. Each day try something new if you can or each week. Some new fruit you have never tried, if you do this I bet you will find several things that you like and are good for you. You are doing great, keep up the good work.

what is so bad about sodium intake?

posted by kokes12 on 12:43 pm

So I have been trying to eat healthy but my sodium intake is in the red. What is so bad about increased sodium intake? anyone know?

by freyja5683 on Jul 12, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Besides being really bad for your health and causing high blood pressure it makes you retain water, causing you to weigh more. Processed foods have lots of sodium and these are the things that you normally want to stay away from when trying to eat healthy.

by freyja5683 on Jul 12, 2011 at 12:53 pm

Sodium is the part of salt that increases blood pressure. There is more sodium in salt than any other food that we eat. We eat salt because it makes food taste better. It enhances the flavor of almost everything we eat. Yet eating too much salt is dangerous.

The body needs sodium to hold water in the blood vessels. Sodium also regulates water balance in all parts of the body. If too much water is held in the body, the amount of blood increases. If it increases too much, problems will arise.

The increase in blood makes the heart work harder. The result can be high blood pressure. Other conditions, such as diabetes, can cause high blood pressure. The most common cause is eating too much salt/sodium. When high blood pressure is not controlled, it can lead to a heart attack, stroke or kidney disease.

by kokes12 on Jul 12, 2011 at 1:49 pm

wonderful, thanks for the info! Your right, the high sodium was because I had coke zero and a smart ones

by freyja5683 on Jul 13, 2011 at 6:28 am

Oh well at least you know now. I too eat processed foods at times but I am trying to find ways around it if possible. I this economy it is hard when you have a family that you have to think of as well. Good luck!

by kokes12 on Jul 13, 2011 at 9:09 am

thank and you too! Ditto on the economy, frozen meals were the cheap, "healthy" options.

by kayjay5 on Jul 14, 2011 at 8:55 am

To some extent the fear of salt is a govt driven issue - just like eggs and fat became something to avoid based on govt recommendations.
Salt is necessary and is really only a problem for people that have issues with high blood pressure.
I have very low blood pressure and having higher sodium in my diet is needed.  Without an adequate amount, I tend to get dizzy every time I stand up.
But I do agree that sodium levels in processed foods are ridiculous.

by freyja5683 on Jul 14, 2011 at 11:22 am

You are right that is the only time it becomes an issue is if you have high blood pressure. But trying to keep it below the reccommended amount will help alot. I retain water like crazy because of sodium so I try to cut it out where I can. But normally we can all benefit from lowering the amount we put into our bodies. Sorry to hear about your condition that doesn't sound like any fun to me.

Starting With the Mind

posted by jules1229 on 12:03 pm

I've been feeling out of control in many areas of life--work, personal, financial, physical. I'm listening to a lot of inspirational CDs (Abraham Hicks, The Secret, Mike Dooley) that say it all starts in the mind.  "You get what your mind focuses on." I had focused on what I can't control.  Then, I decided to log into Livestrong. I know I have a home here. I know how I Feel when I visit here, when I use this tool. Drink Water. Think Thin. Chew Slowly. Move forward. It really IS that simple. The habits of life are up to me. Go Me Go! Go Group Go!

by SharmanAsendorf on Jul 12, 2011 at 12:34 pm

We all have thos moments in life.. The best thing you can do is focus on one aspect and work on that.  Positive results will come and eventually everything else will fall into place.

by dimarsh on Jul 13, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Thank you for the inspirational message. It can be so hard to stay on track. This was a good week, but today I was feeling it was ok to cheat. I've been good, so why not. But my issue is that it isn't just one cheat, it's a full blown all day bad.
After reading your post, the message was clear-I am sabotaging all I've worked for.   Thank you for the simple message.

I started My weight loss Journey Yesterday

posted by ABetterMeATL on 5:23 am

Hello everyone! i decided to join this group because id really like to interact with people who are serious about getting fit or just wanting to live a healthy lifestyle. As a child I was always fit. I ate and ate and thought I would never gain. I played basketball and was a cheerleader(head of spirit squad). My freshman year of college was killer for me. I moved away from home and stopped being active. I put on about 40 to 50 llbs. I am always on the go but I hadnt been eating healthy so I maintained my weight but didnt really lose anything. Im am soon to be 22 years old and i am disappointed in myself. I let my body go. So I am anxious and determined to get back in shape and back on the right track. I am a pretty healthy eater even before I started working out I didnt eat red meat or pork. However starches were my guilty pleasure. :(  Over the past few months id start working out periodically but it would only last a consectutive three days and with my busy schedule I would stop. I really feel my weight is holding me back from a lot. As of yesterday Monday July 10th, i made myself a promise to work out from now on and reach my weight loss goal. Im not exactly sure how much I weigh because I dont own a scale yet lol( buying one today.)But im pretty sure its around 175 to 180.I dont want to focus on how many pounds I lose just my body fat. I will work until I get the results I want. today was my second day working out. I got up at 5am :/ lol I feel great though. I need to push myself to get up every morning before class and go! However I am a little worried because since ive been working out and even a little before ive lost my appetite and i know a big part of losing is eating(of course the right things). I force myself to eat though. Over the past few days Ive eaten a salad, grilled chicken and green pepper melody (my fav) and of course different fruits. I also drink water daily. Becoming a healthier me is something I really want to do and I am determined to reach my goals. Id love any words of advice encouragement and support. My workout consists of 35 to 40 mins of cardio light weight training like the high lat pull and others. I dont do the same excersises everyday I alternate and I work out for about 2 hrs. I plan on working out 6 days a week with 1 rest day. My goal is to lose at least 20 to 30 llbs by my birthday in october. If anyone reads this I appreciate it. signed ABetterMeAT

Good for you for setting a goal for October and announcing it!
I have found that eating a lot of protein fills me up, so I suggest focusing on that along with your fruits and veggies.  Remember that you won't always be perfect and that's ok - don't let one or two bad days derail you!  If you mess up, learn from it and then put it in the past and focus on the present because that's all you can change.
Good luck and remember to lean on the people in this group - we're all going through it together!!  You can do it!!

Thank you!

I think you just have to visulise your goals and find a way that works for you to eat healthy and get some exercise.  After you get into some good habits it should be pretty straightforward :)

Good luck :) and keep motivated

by dietingdeb on Jul 7, 2011 at 7:49 am

is there something you don't understand on here?   on your setting goals, how to log on ur food diary or anything like that?   if you can ask some specific questions can help.
also if you either make ur food diary/food log open to public or pick someone to open to they can help w/suggestions, info, praise etc.
welcome.. forgot to say that. :)

by SharmanAsendorf on Jul 7, 2011 at 8:04 am

D,
The hardest part of this sight is learning how to log your food and fitness.  Just start out simple, Focus on food logging and simple exercises or walking.Once you have about a week worth of logging the system will mark things a frequent.  It will make it easier to follow through.

The other nice thing is to create meals, recipes and loops.  This is awesome and makes logging more simple.
Things that I found that helps me stay on track is the dares.  You can accept the challenge and record it each day.  In many ways it becomes addictive.

Any questions please ask.

Gosan,
I too had a little lapse this weekend.  McDonalds, over by 200 calories.   And then yesterday A hotlink.  Good but now back to reality.  We can do this.

by laurigrosskopf on Jul 7, 2011 at 9:37 am

I had a mushroom and swiss burger and beer fries last Thursday.  It was awesome.  I was helping friends move all day in 95 degree weather so I think I sweated most of it off, but it was worth it.  I also got back from 4 days of camping with no workout equipment and I did well.  I made smart choices and walked as much as I could.  I feel like I can have a real life again.

Almost 10 pounds

I am  at a 7 pounds loss  now and  I can't wait to hit the next 10.  I am feeing pretty good about myself.  It looks great to see the excess weight I gained slowly coming off. Boy finding the rhythm for success has been long in coming.  Even with GBS, the reality is that making choices of "eating this,  not that"  is so important.  Being more active and learning to like activity is also critical.  I am still a couch potato at heart and I do allow myself one day to be that.  The other thing that has really helped me through those moments of nightitme snacking is busying my hands and crocheting.  What a double benefit, no food and I am creating something.

Im glad you are going to start... it can get a lil hard but it will get easier... here is a helpful hint... ill calculate the calories first before i eat the food and then depending how much it comes out to be..ill look over and be like "um do i really need this" and slowly remove things of my plate...

Gosan-- that is what I do too!! it seems that when i see how many calories something is, it will turn me off from eating it, so I will stick with the healthier or less calorie option. But sometimes I still look it up and say: "Huh, I can eat 3 chips ahoy cookies with half a glass of fat free milk and if i dip my cookies in my milk and take as long as possible to eat them, then it will be worth it" lol

I have watched James, LaRhonda, and part of Dana. I am curious as to how these people can give that kind of effort. Is it the type of exercises they are doing that keeps them from injuries? Everytime I push myself even close to that I end up at the sports doctor for a pull/ strain or something. In a selfish way I am jealous of the effort and results they can put in. My body does not seem able to take it.

I started a boot camp on june first and have only dropped a few pounds from 189.7 to 187.5. from all the work i do i feel i should have dropped more and its very discourging but im trying to keep motivated. if yall have any helpful hints to keep motivated and not loose focus, please let me know
thank you!

by natoyadw on Jun 29, 2011 at 6:08 pm

Just wanted to let you know that I can understand your frustration due to the fact that that I weigh the same thing at 5 foot 4. I believe the small steps you take will bring results. I am trying to the same as you. after losing five pounds last week I found out that I gained two more. so instead of 184, I went up to 187. go figure. I will take baby steps too.

by GOSAN1980 on Jun 30, 2011 at 6:04 am

yes you are right baby steps at a time... we will get there!!!

by freyja5683 on Jun 30, 2011 at 7:38 am

Make sure that you have adjusted your calorie goal if needed so that you lose about a 1 lb a week. This is reasonable and doable and it is the small steps that will get you there. Also watch your sodium if you can as it makes you retain water and that might be why you are not dropping like you think you should be. Everyone loses weight differently do not let it discourage you!

by GOSAN1980 on Jun 30, 2011 at 1:01 pm

thank you! i do need to watch the sodium intake but its sooo hard... but ill start it looking at it more

by natoyadw on Jul 1, 2011 at 6:33 am

Wow I never thought about the sodium intake. I will keep that in mind too.

by freyja5683 on Jul 1, 2011 at 6:45 am

Sodium can play a big part and processed foods have a ton of it. I love mac and cheese (kraft) but I have realized that one serving is very small and has over 500 mg of sodium that is a quarter of the daily intake. Sandwich meat is the same way so I have basically stopped eating it and instead bring chicken and turkey cutlets and stuff instead for lunch and make them here at the office and it really helps me save on the intake of sodium. Plus drink as much water as you can each day, it should help tremendously. I have plateaued and been a bit mad about it but I know what I am supposed to do so I just need to do it!

by jaelanne on Jul 2, 2011 at 1:18 pm

i drink LOTS of water!  everytime I feel like I am not losing like I think I should I drink more water. I carry a bottle with me, and everytime I have a discouraging thought, etc, I take a drink. I'd like to think that I can pee out some of my weight, so the more I pee in a day, the better I know I am doing. I used to hate water, and now its all I drink. I have to make myself drink some milk for breakfast or something just to get my calcium and vitamin D. :)
good luck!!  you can do it. Just ignore the scale and keep doing what you know you need to and then after a week, start weighing yourself again. Hopefully what you see will motivate you to keep it up!  :)

Unmoving

posted by Lykins187 on 1:55 pm

I understand why my weight is holding steady instead of steadily going down. I go out to eat with my parents, and I don't always make the time to work out. Maybe I could drink more water too. However, since I am vegan I usually eat very healthy things. I also need a lot of food throughout the day to keep me going, so eating less isn't an option for me. I also don't like the idea of adding anything more strenuous than an hour workout on the treadmill. I have a hard time keeping myself focused and willing to keep going for that long. Does anyone know of any workouts that are quick and super effective that I can do in my home?

by freyja5683 on Jun 28, 2011 at 8:26 am

What about doing intervals on the treadmill, where you do a warm up of 5 minutes and then do a 30 second burst at a higher intensity or incline and then a steady pace for another few minutes and then another 30 second burst. They are super effective and burn more calories than doing a steady pace for an hour. You might even find you can get off the treadmill in half an hr.

by Lykins187 on Jun 28, 2011 at 2:13 pm

I'd be a little afraid to try that because I have exercise-induced asthma, and I forget to start breathing more deeply right away sometimes lol. I'm working up towards walking faster and at a higher incline, so maybe I should just push myself more on that. Doing bursts might be a great way to get there. I can just increase the duration of the bursts each day.

by freyja5683 on Jun 29, 2011 at 6:47 am

Start day one with one or two bursts of 15-30 seconds during what ever your normal work out is that way you are not increasing to much to fast and then increase as you see fit. I bet you will see a difference :)

setting a realistic goal

posted by jencruhl on 11:06 am

I have an old habit of setting unrealistic goals for both dieat and exercize. I am trying to set realistic goals this time around, like losing 1 pound a week and exercizing 3 times a week. I have made it 6 weeks on my food plan and am losing a pound a week. It feels so slow! I am on my second week of exercizing 3x per week. I keep beating mydself up for not doing more and eating less. But, I am hoping that this slow, steady method will actually work and be sustainable. I am toired of gaining and losing the same 30 pounds!

by newest-berry on Jun 27, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Stick with it! The way I always look at it...A loss is a loss! It may seem slow, but what you're doing works because you ARE losing weight! Good luck and keep up the great work!

Any advice on how to conduct one's behavior on the weekend?

posted by natoyadw on 10:51 am

I was doing well all last week. I had a few bumps in the road when I was tracking my calories. I had a small victory with losing five pounds. However, this weekend I had went all out I ate pizza (two slices) and I went out to a birthday party and ate cheeseburger, hamburger and everything else. I used the entire weekend as a cheat day. Is that wise or not so wise? I know I am making a choice to have a healthier lifestyle so any advice for me for when I should decide on what days would be cheat days? The only reason I say this is because I have a pattern of giving up so easily and I dont want to give up and go back to old habits when I need to improve.

by hungryamy on Jun 27, 2011 at 11:29 am

My dietician says that our weight loss is based on what we eat 80% of the time and we can indulge 20% of the time without it blowing it.  She also says that you should eat whatever you want during the 20% but to keep the portion sizes in check.  So, maybe on the weekends, eat the pizza, but only have one slice instead of three (or whatever).  I know it's easier said than done, but that's the advice I'm trying to follow.  Good luck!

by kayjay5 on Jun 27, 2011 at 11:37 am

To some extent it depends on your expectations.  Having cheat meals, days, weekends will definitely slow down your weight loss.  If you have patience and don't worry too much about the scale, I think it's fine.  Some people get frustrated when they don't lose quickly and give up.  Others hate feeling deprived and give up.  It's just a matter of what "style" works for you.

Hi!!
I've been around Livestrong for a while but go back and forth over and over again.  I've decided to become more involved and vocal to try and get more support.  I was a Weight Watchers member years ago and lost weight so I know how food choices can really make a difference in one's weight.  I am currently 5'3" and weigh 160 lbs.  This is the largest I have ever been and it is really effecting me negatively in my everyday life.  My goal is to lose 40 lbs.  I start nursing school in 8 weeks and would really lke to atleast drop 16-20 lbs before then.  Please motivate me!!  Any other nurses out there battling with weight loss or better yet nursing STUDENTS that could share this journey with me?
Bring on the motivation because I've got the fire in me I just need to keep it burning!!!!

Oh my...I`m going to try again!

posted by Swagadelica on 7:33 pm

Hello Everyone,
I had begun tracking my calories when I first quit smoking.  Then a few things like my aunt passing away followed by my grandmother needing hospice care and then passing away kind of acted as curve balls.  I have since been striking out and gained about 10 pounds in 3 months.  Anyway, by the grace of God I managed not to pick up a cigarette, but am now getting kind of down about my weight.  I utilized the livestrong website to help with quitting smoking.  Now I`m hoping it will help with the counting calories.  I will begin in the a.m.
One more thing, I also had a tooth extracted followed by dry socket.  This has made for mashed potatoes, bread and well...I`m having difficulty thinking of much that isn`t fattening or full of pure carbs and sugar!
Are there any suggestions for soft foods &/or getting started?
Best of discipline and motivation to you all,

by Lykins187 on Jun 26, 2011 at 4:38 am

I have never had dry socket before, but I know it is very painful. I hope it gets better soon! Smoothies are a favorite food of mine (I don't know if that's a no-no right now). You can just put a variety of your favorite fruit in a blender add milk, yogurt, or ice if you prefer, and then add a little bit of sugar to taste. Good luck getting back on track! And congrats for quitting smoking :)

by kayjay5 on Jun 27, 2011 at 5:06 am

Soft foods...scrambled eggs, whey protein shakes, greek yogurt, raspberries (they don't require much chewing), bananas...

veggies are harder but eggplant gets soft if you saute it in a pan with chicken stock for about 20 min or so at a med heat.

# going up instead of down, so upset

posted by jencruhl on 9:24 pm

I have followed my meal plan faithfully sticking to a 1400 cal/day limit, lots of protein and fiber, no treats. ANd my weight weant up this week. I am so frustrated. Good decision making is NOT paying off. Why is this happenning? Any advice?

by Swagadelica on Jun 25, 2011 at 9:12 pm

Are you weighing yourself at the same time as the gravitational pull from the moon factors in?  Is it a fluxtuation of two pounds or so which could account for water weight?

Hang in there and keep going regardless...

by Lykins187 on Jun 26, 2011 at 4:42 am

There are MANY things that can throw off a weigh-in: the last time you ate, how much you ate, how much water you have had, if your time of month is due soon, what you're wearing, etc. And when comparing two weigh-ins, you have to try to get the variables as close as possible to the last time. I usually weigh myself in the afternoon after exercising and before dinner. Any time I weigh in under different circumstances, I have to take the number with a grain of salt. See if any of the things I listed might have been the culprit, and if not we'll figure it out from there. Keep your head up, it happens sometimes :)

by jencruhl on Jun 26, 2011 at 5:37 am

Thank you! I waited it out  and stuck to my food plan ..and the # just dropped. YAy! I usually weigh myself first thing in the morning. I guess the issue may have been what I ate the day before or how much water I had drunk. And, I know I should not weigh myself daily but I can't seem to stick to the oncwe a week weigh in.

by Lykins187 on Jun 26, 2011 at 2:45 pm

I, also, cannot only weigh myself once a week. I just use the mid-week weigh-ins to check on how I'm doing and don't beat myself up if I'm higher than I expected. I'm glad it finally evened out for you!

I am going to workout this morning with this workout plan with my boyfriend. If he wakes up that is...if he doesnt oh well. I will work things out myself. Today made me forget about my struggles with this first week with counting calories. In fact I want to go on to add more activity with the less calorie intake. Lets see what happens ladies and gents...lets get it!!!!

Went over...again.

I just remembered and added two items on My Plate. I ate two of my mother's fried shrimp while at the cheesecake factory. Oh they were good. But I had no idea that they would push me over my calorie goal. Maybe I have to watch the little things. I dont really want to work out today but I must. I will definitely go out with a girlfriend of mine and walk the beach strip.

Happy with the movement, but I am still tweaking the food aspect.  Journaling has really made it easier for me.

I'm feel pretty dumb

posted by screaminz2002 on 4:35 am

Yup I said it. My knees have finally allowed me to start jogging short distances again. Still waiting on the shot but they have felt well enough to run 4-5 minutes at a time. So what does my normal over achieving dumb self do? Pull a groin muscle. I wish we had a :facepalm smiley. I mean really? come on.. I stretched, I warmed up up with slow walking, did fast incline walking before I started running. Ugh! sorry just wanted to complain as I now can't even walk for a few days. I am sooo very much bummed right now. The funny thing is I felt it in my but cheek last night.. I remember thinking wow, I could firm up a bit back there!

by SharmanAsendorf on Jun 23, 2011 at 5:56 am

In a few days you will feel better and then you can take the stairs to firm up your butt.  Remember that it is often the littlest thing that causes the injury,  more than likely your muscles were already stressed and it was the timing that sent it over the edge.   Feel better.

Thanks for the warm wishes. I am just a physical mess at the moment and it's spilling over to my attitude. It's hard when you have the 110% desire but can only put forth 15%.

I did it!!!!!

After much work and sacrificing today I went under, not over, my calorie goal. I consumed 1639 today instead of the 1809 yesterday and the over 2000 the day before. I am thankful for this website because I feel I have help with actually not only changing how much i consume but really thinking about how much I consume. Thanks for the advice that I was given. I am a motivated and happy woman!!!!

by screaminz2002 on Jun 23, 2011 at 4:28 am

Glad to hear it! I do a few little things to help out in that department especially since I have a LOT of working lunches. Bringing my own lunch is seldom an option.
You can eat literally pounds of salad for next to no calories. There are also some very light dressing at 50 or so a serving.
Ask for substitutions at restaurants. Nearly every meal comes with fries/rings or mashed potatoes it seems. I have been able to replace those with vegetables and salad at just about every place I have gone.
Chicken is king for meat. Anytime you replace steak with it you are saving huge calories. When in doubt I opt for a grilled chicken sandwich with a salad. This was the hardest part for me. My favorite food is red meat. All I can keep saying is look where it got me and thats the reason I liked it so much.
Try some of the fat free jello for snacks. It's like 5 calories a serving and I think you get used to the taste. (Seems like I thought it was ok in the beginning and now I like it). Anytime I have the sweet tooth it usually satisfies that craving.
The battle is finding low calorie foods you can live with that fill you up. I try to eat subway when I can. It's really convenient and you can eat a ton for low calories. I think a turkey breast foot long loaded with veggies on whole wheat is less then 600 calories?

by natoyadw on Jun 23, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Hey I did just that. I went out to cheesecake factory. I got the grilled chicken and advocado sandwich. I ate only half the sandwich and had a green salad with it with vinagrette dressing with water. I was proud of myself for substituting the salad for the fries. But I really wanted the fries, God!!! I wanted fries. lol. If you are reading this my weakness is potatoes. I do the red meat very sparingly, cookouts or if it is there but its very seldom I have it.

So altogether I consumed 1702. But what can I do for the cravings...I am about to change my name from Natoya to screaminT if I dont get them under control. I get hungry late during the day. Ugh!!!!

by freyja5683 on Jun 24, 2011 at 8:12 am

What is it that you are craving maybe you can substitute something else for it??!? Good substitutions....keep track and you will see what you can do to better your caloric intake. I eat about 1800 calories a day or less, I am supposed to eat less but I just try to burn more because as of right now I can not honestly do any less or I am starving all day.

Ok I worked out yesterday before I went to class and then went to the gym after class and did the treadmill and leg machines and ab machines, I felt good. How do I post the workouts I did with the machines and the workouts I did on my own so the fitness part of this website can calculate what I did for fitness and not just calculate the treadmill part of my whole day?

by hipmamac on Jun 22, 2011 at 7:37 am

There should be something under weights in the exercise lists.

by screaminz2002 on Jun 23, 2011 at 4:08 am

I have tried to research this quite a bit. Gone to different sites that had exercises listed by activity or just weight lifting sites. Some have said you can use a heart rate monitor where others have said it was inaccurate. Seems like it was more for a general count. LS lists 4 different types but what is vigorous? I would doubt two people lifting weights could agree. Then there is a formula but I never could find as specific exercise for the variable plug in number. I just normally use the less out of the 4 listed here and hope I am erroring on the side of caution.

by hipmamac on Jun 23, 2011 at 7:26 am

Yes, I too did use the least vigorous one and at least if I burned more it worked in my favour.

Hey is there anyone who can give me some tips on how to meet my goal of losing fifty pounds. It is my second day with livestrong and I feel I am already at a lost. Today, I walked two miles. I went over my goal of 1729. So I would accept tips of how to embrace changes in eating and exercising more than I have done currently. Confused

by screaminz2002 on Jun 22, 2011 at 4:17 am

First let me say congratulations on choosing to become healthier! You can do it!
Just keep in mind that this is a marathon and not a sprint! I would say going over your calories a bit when you just get started is fine. It's the initial commitment that's important and striving to do better everyday. Was this the first time you exercised in a while?
See everything as an improvement to the previous way you were living. Not a hurdle to be overcome but something you did today that out did yesterday. Soon those calories won't be a problem and you will be trying to eat that many instead of the other way around.
Are you logging all your food and exercise? The more exercise you do the more calories that gets added to your base calorie count. Think of this as extra fuel to do the exercises. Also take a look on the internet for general health questions like what carbs are good carbs etc.
Lastly just remember that there is no need to go into shock with dramatic changes. You car doesn't suddenly do 70 mph right? It has to start off slow and go through gears to get there. The harder and faster you push it the more gas it uses. Instead try a slow and steady approach. The weight will come off and you will be able to keep it off.
There are also forums on this site with a wealth of information. I try to read a little bit everyday and incorporate something from what I read. It may be as simple as a salt substitute or cooking with pam. Just keep at it and you will be fine!

Congrats on being a new member I am also a recent member and I think the advice you got from screaminz is great advice.  That is why I love this website cause you can come here for encouragement and advice and it keeps you motivated.  I always look at the labels of what I eat and calculate the calories up in my head so I know how much Im taking in and if you dont know you could always type in on this website and it will tell you.  Everytime I see something I know is alot of calories I think about my goal , but dont get me wrong you cant be perfect so if I really want something that is not good for me I will limit myself to a couple bites or I have one day out of the week that I could cheat a lil bit.  With the working out thing Im still struggling with that myself so I cant give you too much advice myself.

by freyja5683 on Jun 22, 2011 at 6:51 am

Go slow, as slow and steady wins the race. Know that not every day is going to be a good day, you will slip and fall but you have to get back up and start over. If you eat something that kind of derails you for a while, start over right then and there and do not let it derail more than that moment. This is not diet but a lifestyle change and there will always be times when someone throw a monkey wrench in your plans. Move on and over it and know that we are all here to support you, we all started where you are and although some of us may not have the right words to say all the time we deep down know what you are going through and will try and help in any way that we can.

by natoyadw on Jun 22, 2011 at 5:43 pm

Thanks everyone for the advice. I feel like I already have won the battle a little at a time. I will take your advice slow and steady wins the race, right freyja? And thank you screaminz and lillian as well. I will keep in touch.

by freyja5683 on Jun 23, 2011 at 8:01 am

I can tell you that slow and steady does win the race...I have been doing a challenge on another group. We are calling it the 100 push up challenge and we are using the site http://hundredpushups.com/ and it has really worked for me. I am currently in week 4 of the challenge and I am doing them modified for the time being. But I did 113 this morning and for that I am super impressed and proud of myself. You do these in sets of 5 so it is very well thought out and you can accomplish it. See slow and steady....
