7 hours of SeaWorld

posted by screaminz2002 on 5:57 pm

I am so beat and my kiddo was asleep within 5 minutes of being in the car seat. Was a super day to play hooky from work and go do a nice family thing. I logged this as fitness since I am still sedentary from my knee problems. Not sure but tell me what you think?
2.5 hours of swimming. It was probably more like 3-3.5 consisting of crab walking the tube pool (he didn't fit in the tube so he rode on me) running back and forth across the wave pool, and chasing each other around the kiddy pool. My legs are killing me!!
I also logged 1.5 hours of walking 2.5mph for just general back and forth and the play ground.
I figure if we were actually at the park for 7 hours this should balance out?

I said that i loved him and that I can see us together for a long time, but there was no need to rush into things. We have not been together a year yet and I am not ready for that kind of commitment. That does not keep me from feeling all giddy and gushy about the whole thing. Just needed to tell someone thanks!

Noticable Weight Loss

posted by laurigrosskopf on 10:39 am

I am feeling great.  Other than the fact we went to Old County Buffet for fathers day yesterday and a movie, but I have not splurged like that in forever.  I made sure to do my ball crunches and 30 min on my Gazelle before we went out for the day.  It helped ease a little of the guilt.  I was so pumped when we ran into a friend of ours I have not seen in a couple of months and he looked at me and said, "wow, have you lost weight, you look great".  I said about 45 pounds and he looked at my husband and said "you got be loving that".  Corey smiled and looked at me and said Oh yeah!  Makes every sit up worth it.  I was lazy and did not work out this morning but will tonight.  I am so motivated on Saturday I went thru my closet and weeded out the last of my fat clothes, nothing but single digits in there now!  I found my size 6 leather pants I have not worn in probably 7 years - Are you ready - THEY FIT!  I look completely hot in them!  Bike fest in Vegas this fall is going to be so fun.  I am so proud to say I am 41 and will be wearing size 6 leather pants when we go on the poker run.   I am not bragging, I have worked so hard to get here.  Any one out there who is struggling know YOU CAN DO IT!  I went from a size 14 to a size 5/6/7.  I have my life back.  It's tough, but when you start feeling better and looking better it is so worth it.  So just keep going and you will get there.  Livestrong gave me my life back!

by laurigrosskopf on Jun 20, 2011 at 10:42 am

FYI, I put those pants on and went and sat on the back of my husbands harley and i look incredible.  I thought his eyeballs were going to pop out.  lol!

still working on it

posted by LILMAN053107 on 5:36 am

Ok so Thursday I stood home with my sick son and didnt do anything, no excuse.  Friday I didnt do anything due to pure lazyness.  Saturday I did wake up and do some abdominal excercises and leg excercises in the morning before I left to do anything else that day and then went and did an outside activity with my son and mom, not much but something.  Sunday I did nothing but clean my house and did a fathers day thing for my husband , still no excuse just pure lazy.  Well today starts a new week and I will not be lazy I will have a workout to post every day this week that is my goal!!!  I still watched what I ate on those days so I am doing good on that part.

by jaelanne on Jun 20, 2011 at 6:35 pm

I dont know about you, but I totally count housework!! I count when I soend my time really busting my house clean. :)  Sunday I swore to myself I was not going to clean house or freak out about it, because I spent 2 days in the hospital with one of my daughters (she is fine now, no biggie) but my hubby and other two girls really backed up my housework.  All the promises meant nothing, I snapped and had to clean. Ended up mowing the backyard, sweeping up the trash and leaves, cleaning our law furniture for our cook out, then cleaned the kithcen, did dishes, swept and mopped the floor, did two loads of laundry, put away all the laundry i did before the hospital (it covered our pool table) and then cleaned the living room and two bathrooms. You'd better believe I would have counted ALL of it!! :)  (I actually didnt log anything that day, but I guilt free enjoyed all the food that My hubby wanted to eat on his Fathers Day)  :)

by LILMAN053107 on Jun 22, 2011 at 5:38 am

LOL, well Im glad your lil one is ok, and with all that housework you did I would of counted it too. I only live in a two bedroom apartment right now so when I do clean its not as much as you had to do but I still post it and just put how long it took me.

Ouch, is that a 180 from what you currently have been doing? I would suggest starting small and working your way towards that goal instead of trying to do it all at once. It's very easy to get overwhelmed in a hurry and just resort back to old habbits.

by tlusher1976 on Jun 18, 2011 at 10:48 am

I don't agree with the above comment. There is nothing wrong with jumping in with both feet. We all fall off the horse. It's about having the sticktoittiveness to dust yourself off and get back in the saddle. I say go for it, and good luck.

hello again

posted by laurigrosskopf on 9:50 am

I have not been on the group for a while.  Been trying to clean up my dad's affairs and deal with family stuff.  Yet I have managed to tone up and lose weight.  I use exercise as a release of stress now instead of the refridgerator.  Last weekend I wore my size 5 Levis with only little stretch to them.  I looked hot!  I am SO pumped to say that last night I stopped at Kohl's to use my Kohl's cash and tried on some size 8 dress pants they had on the clearance rack even though my 8's at home are getting baggy.  They were too big.  I decided to go out on a limb and try on some size 6 short / petite dress pants.  Every pair i tried on fit.  I walked out of there with 4 pairs of size 6 dress pants and they were different brands so it is not a brand thing.  I REALLY CAN WEAR SIZE 6!!    They are not as loose in the waist as I prefer, but my exercise ball and some Pilates will fix that!  I am so very proud of myself and motivated.  In fact even though I only got a little over 5 hours of sleep I was up early working out.  I have went from a size 14 to a size 5/6 om 6 months!  I can't wait to hit the beach or Rock Fest - I have some awesome new bikinis to try out that look great.  Who would have thought at 41!  I could not have done this without Livestrong.  Livestrong gave  me back my life!  So any of you who are feeling frustrated, keep it up!  You can do it, I did!

by screaminz2002 on Jun 15, 2011 at 10:01 am

Congratulations! Such a good feeling and I can't wait to hit my goals. Oh and just for good information, 41 is still young!

by cevans619 on Jun 15, 2011 at 10:34 am

That is amazing and so inspiring. Congrats! You must have been super stricked.  What are your work outs lik?

by laurigrosskopf on Jun 15, 2011 at 11:43 am

I am.  When I get serious about losing weight I get into a zone or groove.  I call it my diet mojo.  I started off slower because I was out of shape.  But usually 6 days a week I use my Gazelle which is similar to an elliptical but with lower impact for at least 30 min.  I have cancer reconstruction and impact is uncomfortable.  I also walk at work usually 5 days a week and try on the weekend anywhere between 25 and 30 min a day.  Then I try to do 15 min of exercises on my exercise ball for toning 7 days a week.  I usually miss one day every other week or so.  I am pretty much at goal so I am easing up on myself a bit.  My eating is a big thing.  I have a fruit and sometime coffee at breakfast.  Then I have a smart ones meal at lunch - they are only $1.98 at Walmart I can't eat out of the vending machine for that.  For treats I buy sugar free pudding or sugar free jello.  The more weight I lose the stricter I am on myself.  I switched to the jello as it is only 10 calories and yummy.  For supper I use a lot of vegetables and make a lot of stir fries.  I some times make myself a simple meal of veggies and shrimp or left over chicken.  My husband is 6'3" and 235 so he likes to eat.  I make smart choices when eating out.  But I absolutely love chinese so I let myself splurge on that once in a while and just make it up the next day.  I am pretty much OCD mode.  lol  I am going to look hot in my daisy dukes at Rock Fest this year.  I made my goal!

by freyja5683 on Jun 15, 2011 at 12:26 pm

That is a great feeling and good for you. If I could eat veggies more than I do I would. I can't stand them and I have tried all kinds. Although I must say that I am finding new veggies that I like and that is a plus and I am finding all kinds of ways to try and fit workouts in :). I am very inspired by your story, keep up the good work and rock those daisy dukes!

by TheNewJB on Jun 16, 2011 at 11:10 am

That is so great!  Thank you for the inspiration!  That is the best feeling to know you are down another size.  14 to 6 is AWESOME! (I probably use that word too much but it is!)  I'm looking forward to the day I can put on a 14 right now . . . I have a size 14 dress I want to wear for my anniversary in October.  Right now I'm still around a 18W . . . some 16W pants but not the tops . . .
You have given me new hope!

Enjoy your success and RockFest!

You can do it, Just keep it up and hang that dress where you can see it.  You have until October, it might even be too big on you by then.  It would be totally worth having to buy a new dress!!  You can do this.  Livestrong is the best tool i have ever found.

Made the 2.35 mile walk

posted by SharmanAsendorf on 8:47 am

I got up early this morning and made the walk.  I did it in less time, I shaved about 3 minutes off.  Almost half way there to 10,000 steps in exercise.

by screaminz2002 on Jun 15, 2011 at 10:05 am

Congrats on shaving that time off! Is the 10k steps a personal goal? Kind of neat and never thought about it in steps before!

by freyja5683 on Jun 15, 2011 at 1:34 pm

Way to go, now just to get to your other goal :) You can do this!

by SharmanAsendorf on Jun 16, 2011 at 7:37 pm

For a healthy lifestyle it is said that we all should be  walking 10,000 steps.  It is kind of deliberate.  I get close on most days around 8,000 +.  It definetly shows how much we can be sedentary.

Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” Unknown

by SharmanAsendorf on Jun 14, 2011 at 8:42 am

Powerful thought!

This morning I ws up and did some stretching beofre I headed out with my sister to walk. We have a goal for 2.35 miles, but this morning itwas thwaerted by the addition of taking the little ones with us. It was a great walk but it is a little far for them. We did manage to get in 1.63 miles in 32 minutes and a great way to start the morning with beautiful little faces.

by freyja5683 on Jun 14, 2011 at 9:10 am

Well at least you were able to do something. I try to walk outside after work every night during the spring, summer (when not to hot) and the fall. But like everyone else sometimes life just gets in the way. I walked/jogged for 48 minutes last night and I burned 590 calories. I love to walk but I also have had shin splints so I now know that I have to listen to my body and do only what it tells me to do.

by screaminz2002 on Jun 15, 2011 at 10:09 am

That is some great advice I should have followed a couple of weeks ago. Apparantly with age the saying of no pain no gain no longer applies. Or so the doctors tell me Thats ok, a couple of shots in the knees and a little rehab and I should be as good as before I started Still lost 2 lbs this week!

by freyja5683 on Jun 15, 2011 at 12:34 pm

Yes listening to the body for me is a must right now. I can not afford any more injuries OR sidelining. As a matter of fact I am not working out tonight as I have a tightness or cramp in my right calf and I can not make it worse. It seems to have lessened as the day went on but it is still there and I am not pushing my luck. I am 35 and not willing to let this continue any longer.

Hello

posted by SharmanAsendorf on 7:14 pm

I am a member to several other groups on LS.  I am looking for members who want to be friends and stay connected through posting and cheering each other on.  I have an ultimate goal of 60 pounds by June 25, 2012. That is a little over a year.  So far I have lost 3.6 pounds since my frist weigh-in and I am looking forward to any little bit gone is a positive.
I am currently upto walking a little over 2 miles in the morning and I am worried when I return to work in August making time for me again.

by freyja5683 on Jun 14, 2011 at 7:53 am

That is a very realistic goal and I wish you the best of luck, you can friend me if you would like and I will do my best to give you suport and motivation as needed.

by jaybo2272 on Jun 14, 2011 at 6:21 pm

I would love to have the friendship and support and I too have 60 lbs to loose.  I am going to a woman's gym in the mornings have been at least 3 times a week now since Mid April -- and I am just consistently adding the treadmill... planning on doing a 5K this fall!
I am not sure of your situation as far as getting in your walk time -- but making yourself a priority is key -- I have had to make many adjustments because I need to do this for me!

by laurigrosskopf on Jun 15, 2011 at 9:54 am

I applaud you.  I have lost 45 pounds since the first of December and went froma size 14 to a size 5/6.  Livestrong gave me my life back.  I cannot tell you how much better I feel.  I actually like to look in a mirror.  I would love to offer support and get support as well.  Just keep your goal in mind and find ways to motivate yourself and you will do this!

I have a couple Zumba DVDs, they are a lot of fun, I highly recommend it.

by Tazsmit on Jun 14, 2011 at 7:22 am

Hi Marz - may I inquire as to which ones you have?  I was reading about them and the first set was said to be to talkative and the second set is like watching a Brittney Spears video.

by CourtneyStone on Jun 14, 2011 at 10:09 am

I take a Zumba class at the gym and it is fun.  I would definitely need the talkative one because I have 2 left feet!  Sorry I can't help you with the videos.

by Tazsmit on Jun 14, 2011 at 3:30 pm

Purchased the Zumba total body set on ebay.  Hope I like it.  If not someone at work wants it.

by Marz2922 on Jun 15, 2011 at 7:40 am

I will check tonight when I get home which ones I have.  There is a whole instructional portion and then either a 45 or 60 min workout.  They almost seem like they're actually from Latin America, I will let you know what they're called.

You just have to get out there and do it!! If you have not been working out then maybe start out slow. TRy and do something you enjoy as well. You can find a hidden workout in a lot of places. Playing with kids, animals, going swimming.
If you give yourself about two weeks of working out, you wont need to force yourself.  You get so much more energy and wont want to just be a lazy bum. Also, you will be surprise how much of a difference working out makes in your fitness goals. It speeds up your metabolism, gives you a TON of energy and lets you eat MORE. who doesn't like that? If you do start working out and doing weight training, (which I highly recommend, it helps your body burn more calories while your not doing ANYTHING, rather than cardio is just while your working out) remember that the scale will lie to you. Muscle weighs more than fat, so dont get discouraged if you dont see a budge on the scale or if you even GAIN weight. its better for you in the long run.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice. Im going to make myself do it tomorrow. I know once I get started I will be alright.

by jaybo2272 on Jun 14, 2011 at 6:25 pm

I am the same way, or shall I say was.. Now I am becoming the opposite -- I don't like the days that I don't exercise!  And I just started going consistently April 20th!  I joined a woman's gym and just finished a Boot Camp that you had to show up at least 3 days a week for 5 weeks - so that helped keep me going... YOU CAN DO IT!!

by laurigrosskopf on Jun 15, 2011 at 9:57 am

I agree, the first 2 weeks are the hardest but then it becomes part of your routine.  I am very routine oriented and getting a workout of some sort even a 20 min walk in is imperative or I am frustrated.  Once it become engrained as part of your lifestyle it will just be one more thing you do each day.  Just stick it out the first couple weeks.

What's up with the badges and how do you aquire them?
Wish me luck for the weekend!  Fridays after lunch (I work 1/2 days) through Sunday night are MAJOR eating struggles for me!  Lack of schedule and planning really gets me.  I have plans to go to a Box-n-Burn class Saturday and I find that when I work out more I concentrate on my food intake more, so I'm not defeating the purpose of working out.  Hoping for a great weekend so my Monday weigh in shows a negative (ina positive way!)
BTW, I went to my first Box-n-Burn class last night and it whooped my butt!  Whew!

by Angie54 on Jun 12, 2011 at 1:06 pm

The badges come automaticall.  Sign in for 14 & 30 days.  Log food and exercise for 14 & 30 days.  I actually wish they had more for over the different holidays.  I did get one for logging food in on Thanksgiving and Christmas one year but not for New Years Eve.  Perhaps I just haven't hit other special days.

by CourtneyStone on Jun 10, 2011 at 10:14 am

Nope, I've created my own diet structure, LOL, it's a blend of the Ab's diet, volumetrics, etc.  Generally eating only healthy foods, food that is more filling for the amount of calories, and watching my overall values that i track on LS.
I'd be interested in reading the book though, and hearing about your results!!!  Keep us informed!

Hey everyone, I am starting my first day of workout tomorrow and really , really , need the motivation of others to help me stay on track. I have always started diets and workouts and never go fully through with them due to lack of motivation and then I end up gaining my weight back and 10lbs more. I am now 5'2 and 172lbs. and very disappointed in myself.  I will be glad to take any tips from anyone that will help me in my journey and will be very willing to help anybody else in theres. Thank You.

Help! Company BBQ tomorrow!

posted by boxofmochi on 2:19 pm

I think I posted last time about how I escaped the sandwich scare.  But this time it's a BBQ!
I'm thinking I'll pick as much veggies as possible...but the chances that the'll have chicken or fish instead of beef?  I don't think so =/.
They're even celebrating a few birthdays at the same time - there's going to be cake!

by freyja5683 on Jun 10, 2011 at 5:57 am

Trick is to drink a couple of glasses of water before hand, then eat as many veggies as you can or as many as you like. Beef isn't that bad, in moderation and I love red meat! If you can avoid the cake that is great but if not just have a very small pc and take off some of the icing if you can. Trick is to work with this as they are always going to come up.

meh...

I am feeling so unmotivated lately and have been for the past 2 weeks.  I have been slacking and it's showing on the scale.  I started working out hardcore again on Monday and have worked out Mon, Tue and Wed.  I have plans to work out the rest of this week.  I feel like I can do better with exercise, but as far as eating goes, I have a lot left to be desired.  I've been eating crap, just plain junk.  The more junk I eat, the more I want and the harder it is for me to stop.  Oh my gosh, how do I stop this vicious cycle, I feel like I'm spiralling out of control.  (I don't know how true this is, but I've read that birth control pills can screw around with weight loss and hunger.  I did gain weight after starting BCPs a few years ago and I have found it is sooooo hard to take that weight off).  I don't want to stop taking birth control, but maybe there is something else out there that I could take that would not mettle with my weight loss goals...

by hipmamac on Jun 9, 2011 at 7:14 am

When I was eating alot of junk, at the start of my journey, I did the wild rose detox (i think that is the name?)  Basically eating clean and no dairy, sugar.  It really help to get me off of the sugar cravings and most junk has sugar in it.   I did go back to sugar in my coffee  a while later, but it did help me.  Later on and now, I only allow myself to have junky snacks when I have exercised enough to burn them off first and then I measure out the portion to how many calories I had left for the day!  Just my 2 cents :)

by bethy87 on Jun 9, 2011 at 8:22 am

I truely believe that the more junk you eat, the more you want it! I have found that true for myself. When I eat healthy for a few days and get the good calories my body needs then i don't crave junk and its easier to say no but when I eat junk a lot during the day then its all I crave.

Edited by bethy87, on June 09th, 2011 at 9:19 am.

by cevans619 on Jun 9, 2011 at 10:52 am

What I do when I fall off the wagon is try to cook something healthy that is like the junk you have been eating.  For example, I LOVE burgers, so I make a healthy option. I  get ground turkey and season how ever I was (garlic, onion and jalapenos mm) and grill them up on the grill or George foreman. I get a whole wheat bun. I LOVE tater tots and fries so I bake them instead of frying them. or if I wanna watch the carbs I'll just make 5oz of garlic potatos so I know I'm only eating 100 calories of potatos and then make a salad or veggie. It taste AMAZING and is easy. When ever I buy ground turkey I weigh them out into 4oz patties and freeze them.
Try not to beat yourself up to much. we all do it. (esp me) You will be surprised. Your body responds to the way you treat it. You feed it junk and you have no energy, and feel like junk. You take care of it, work out and feed it good food and you will feel amazing, full of energy and not want to be lethargic. Try hard for about 2 weeks and it wont be hard to eat healthy anymore.

by Marz2922 on Jun 9, 2011 at 7:28 pm

Thanks everyone, I am going to take what I've read here and apply to my situation.  I love the idea of turkey burgers, we already use turkey burger when we make chili, so this won't be a huge change, but it will be waaaay healthier.  I'm also going to look up the rose detox, that sounds like something I need to do.  I'm addicted to diet coke!  I am down to 1 or 2 a day, but I really want to get to the point where I don't feel like I need it anymore.

How can I get involved in this challenge?  I have been using the iPhone app for a while but haven't been involved much in the groups.  I'd like the motivation because none of my friends or family are on a similar journey.  I've signed up at a gym and I'm ready to pump it!  I like the idea of group accountability.

by hipmamac on Jun 9, 2011 at 7:16 am

This one goes for until the end of June.  I can add you in if you want to be accountable,  Just send me your weight today, your goal amount to lose and if you want we can track (optional) water intake for the week in oz and exercise in days per week. I will try and run one in July, it just might take longer to post results due to holidays :)

Complimentary lunch at the office!

posted by boxofmochi on 11:38 am

Before I started thinking more about my health, I would've jumped at a day like this.
But now I tend to dread these days when the company serves lunch, because suddenly the food gets out of my control, and I have no idea what's in there most of the time!
TODAY however, I'm happy to say I did take a few steps to help myself in whatever way possible.
The company served sandwiches today.  All that was left was really roast beef, ham, and tuna sandwiches.  Here's what I did:
1. I grabbed the tuna.  Fish over ham or beef.
2. I immediately chucked the white bread it came with (there was no whole wheat anything :( ), and chucked the humongo slices of pepperjack cheese as well.
3. Instead of the bread, I wrapped the tuna in the lettuce leaves (which were pretty large).  I ended up turning it into a tuna wrap, with slices of tomato, pickles, and some onions.
The casualites:
Couldn't do much about the mayo that was mixed into the tuna, so there was about 100 calories and about 10g of fat I couldn't get away from =/.
Couldn't do anything about the high sodium content either. Comes with the territory of outside-prepared foods I guess. I just ended up chugging a bit more water.

by freyja5683 on Jun 6, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Way to go! you did a great job with what was presented to you. Even I couldn't have done that!

Well so far today I have turned down grilled hot dogs with grilled buns and fudgicles and creamsicles...and it is only 1 pm here. I instead had my grilled chicken on a hamburger roll with BBQ sauce and cheese and an apple. However I have to say there is a very strong pull for a creamsicle.

by freyja5683 on Jun 3, 2011 at 11:49 am

At such a young age it is hard to know what to suggest as what I would suggest is what you are doing. Only other thing I can suggest also doesn't include them and that would be to work out while they nap.
Sorry Beth, not much help with this one.

by dietingdeb on Jun 6, 2011 at 10:28 am

have them do exercises w/you.  i use to teach a parent toddler class and kids love to do things w/moms and dads.
you can lay on ur back with knees bent and have one of them sit on ur feet and bring knees toward chest and back down.
you can sit on floor with legs straddled and  have them sit holding ur hands and lean back and forth.   try doing dancing and jumping w/them.
do marching around the rm. with them.   standing and do toe touching.
do crazy dancing w/them.   play follow the leader.  can let them lead too.
you could probably look up exercises to do w/kids online and find things there too.   good luck

Thanks deb. I will try to do some of that with my son!

A friend sent me this...
Things you can do to get strength training all throughout the day:

Throw him in the air a few times
Sit down and put him on your feet then extend your legs out in front of you while holding on to his shoulders.
Lunges while holding him.
Push-ups with him on your back.
Airplane – lay on your back and hold him straight up above you.  Fly him around and lower him closer to you and back up.
Flips - hold your arms straight out in front of you and hold his hands.  Let him 'walk' up your legs and stomach until he can flip over backwards - this one takes practice (on carpet)!

Things you can do to get cardio all throughout the day:

Dance with him instead of watching them.
Clean – LOL
Walk/jog the neighborhood.
Trampoline – small in home version would work
Aerobics videos

5 Strategies For Beating Exercise Apathy
Thursday, June 02, 2011  |  From Dietriffic

If we’re all entirely honest, there are times when last thing we want to do is exercise, even when we know we should. It can be a great struggle at times.
And I suppose, nobody can possibly feel motivated to workout 100 percent of the time. Yet, as we all know by now, the key to long term success in any fitness routine is consistency.
So, how can we conquer those feelings of resistance to exercise?
How To Overcome Exercise Apathy

Here are 5 tricks of the trade for keeping your exercise routine going, even when you’d rather be doing something else.
1. Expect To Feel Apathetic (At Times)
As I mentioned, everyone falls prey to exercise apathy from time to time. It’s completely normal to feel this way once in a while.
But, many people see this stage as a personal failure, a sign that they just don’t have the will power to stick with their plan, or achieve their goals.
In fact, there’s no need to beat yourself up, you are simply going through a natural phase in your progress. If you stick with it, you will soon be back on track, and thankful that you didn’t give up, when you hit that rough spot.
2. Do Something At Least
Getting started is usually the first hurdle you will face. The thought of a one hour workout can be off-putting, so break it down into manageable chunks, and tackle them as they come.
Tell yourself you just need to get dressed, get your shoes on, and then out the door.
When you take these first little steps, you will be able to muster the energy to do something, at the very least.
More often than not, you will find that those 15 minutes you said you would start with, ended up being more like a full workout.
3. Vary Your Routine
Exercise apathy is sometimes the result of doing the same exercises over and over again. It’s amazing what a change of scenery, or a new workout routine will do for you.
Perhaps you always go running, so how about a gym workout, or a swim, to change things up a bit?
Another idea is to join a fitness class in your local area  – this can really help with consistency, because you are forced to join up with the class on a weekly basis.
4. Team Up

MeiTeng

There’s no doubt, exercise can be really enjoyable as “me-time,” however it can also be refreshing to meet up with a friend, or a group from time to time, too.
You could even try out a new team sport, or get together with a friend or a group of friends for a game of tennis, cycling, hiking, or football.
Not only will you have lots of fun, but if you’re joining with a new group of people, you will probably make new friends as well.
5. Be Specific About Goals
Without a clear set of goals, it is difficult to get a sense of progress and accomplishment, and that can really dampen your enthusiasm.
The key to setting goals is to make them as specific as possible. For example, many people define their fitness goal as simply, “I want to get in shape.” The problem with that is, “getting in shape,” could mean a lot of different things.
A better goal would be, “I want to get in shape, so that I can jog 3 miles.” This gives you a way to measure your progress, and know when you have been successful in achieving it.
Goals should also be timely, because having a deadline helps focus your efforts, and it keeps you accountable.
To continue with our example, “I want to get in shape to jog 3 miles within 2 months,” would be an even better statement of the goal you want to achieve.
If you do fall prey to exercise apathy, and miss a workout or ten, don’t worry. Just get back into it… starting today.
The benefits of being fit and healthy really are worth it!
Do you struggle with this? What are your tips for beating exercise apathy?

Realization

posted by mrs.armstrong on 11:24 am

I was talking to my mom today about loosing weight and I said "You know my issue is that I KNOW I can loose the weight, but I have no faith in myself what-so-ever that I will keep it off once I get down to my goal." I have this mentality that I can do anything for ____ months. I can do anything to reach my goal. But eating healthy and exercising sucks and I just need to find a way of breking to myself that if I want to be healthy I have to eat and exercise like this FOREVER. Not just intil I reach 130lbs. I honestly think that mentality is what keeps me going though. Like thinking this sucks, but I'll get through it. No I won't get through it. I need to learn to love eating healthy and exercising. I actually do like to exercise, once I start doing it. It's just getting my fat butt off the couch that's the hard part. Back in 2004 I lost about 80pounds because of a health issue, but the moment I had surgery and could eat anything I wanted, I did and gained it all back. So that bothers me that the moment I was able to eat junk I did. It scares me that history repeats itsself. :/

by freyja5683 on Jun 2, 2011 at 11:34 am

It's all about moderation, you can do anything and everything if you moderate it. It's not about deprivation at all, it's not that you can't have unhealthy food. It's that you can't have more than a small bit of it and if you love exercising. I say schedule at a time of day you know that you can get at least some done, that way you will get up and do it and then you will keep doing it cause as you said once you are up you keep at it. It is a totally different mind set but you need to kind of sych your self up about it each and ever day. I wish I had more encouraging words or a secret I could share with you but honestly each day is a struggle and we just have to try and get past it.

by bethy87 on Jun 2, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Totally agree with Freyja....great comment!

by mrs.armstrong on Jun 2, 2011 at 1:34 pm

Thanks Freyja, You're right. And eating healthy shouldn't suck unless i'm depriving myself. Tues and Thurs I go to fitness bootcamp, but I think I need to start doing more.

by freyja5683 on Jun 3, 2011 at 6:26 am

Start slow, trust me on this....if you do to much too soon you will feel burnt out and you will never stick with it. Try different things and keep the ones you like and move on from the ones you don't. I love to walk when I can't get on e in I feel lost. However I also have a back up for when it rains or I can only find 10 minutes...and I like that too. Start getting rid of junk food from the house, this is a big help. If it is accessible it is much easier to find excuses to eat it.
Slow and steady is the way to go, this if a lifestyle change and it really does take some time and patience, but we can do it!

by CourtneyStone on Jun 8, 2011 at 10:37 am

My reply is kind of late but I just wanted to share my opinion...
I think about that too, that no matter how hard I work my butt off that I will have to do it forever to keep the weight off.  I have to remember that after I get to my goal it won't have to be as extreme to maintain, but I also feel like WHEN I do get the pounds off that I will have more energy, have built up some endurance and will be excited about exercising.  As of now, I don't love going to the gym, running or whatever and struggling through my workouts

by freyja5683 on Jun 8, 2011 at 11:31 am

Courtney, you are right. I think that eventually I will look forward to these things, just not yet. However I have been at this for a bit now and I think that I am getting there.

Hey, how is everyone?  I need to come back to my LS group!  I've missed you all, and I have got to get my weight under control.  I quit smoking 48 days ago.  I'm so proud of that, but in the meantime, I've gained about 10 pounds.  Ugh!  Anyway ... I'm back!!

Exercise Expectations

Exercise Expectations
Tuesday, May 31, 2011  |  From Fit Chick Tricks by Musclemommy

What You Can Expect From Exercise
The Shrot Term Benefit (right after you finish): Exercise works on the part of the brain that determines what kind of mood you’re in. No matter how rotten you feel when you start out, a good run, swim, bike ride, or walk can change that mood. If you’re already feeling good, you’ll even feel better.
The Long Term Benefit: After a few weeks your body will be firmer and more flexible. Your pulse will be slower when you’re not working out; a sign that your heart is working at a healthier pace. You’ll look better and the difference will start to show in your shape and how you carry yourself.

What You Can’t Expect From Exercise
You can’t expect to look like a super model that  you see in a magazine, television or advertisement. If you went to take voice lessons, you might expect your voice to improve, but you wouldn’t expect to sound like Madonna. The same goes for your shape. You’ll end up with your body –  in shape,  not with the shape of someone else.

A Work Out That Works
The word exercise covers a lot of different activities, from walking to weight lifting. The best exercise is any kind that keeps your whole body moving for at least 20 minutes, makes you breathe harder than usual, makes you sweat, and gets your heart beating faster.
A good exercise routine involves these four things:
Warming up
Conditioning
Cooling down
Stretching
Warming up
Before you begin working out at full force, start slowly by using the same motions you’ll be using when you’re exercising . By starting out easy, your giving your blood time to make its way to your muscles. The blood is fuel for those muscles, and if you don’t give it a chance to get to them, they might poop out on you.

Conditioning
This is when you work your body so much that you feel a difference in your pulse rate and in the way you are breathing. During conditioning, you’re working out the most important muscle of all — your heart. Exercise that increases your pulse rate (makes your heart beat faster) is the kind that has all of the benefits like controlling your appetite and making you feel terrific. People who don’t exercise end up storing much more of what they eat as fat, than people who work out often. The reason for this is that muscles which are in good shape from conditioning use of a lot of energy, and fat uses hardly any energy at all. (Read: you burn more calories)

Cooling down
Don’t bring yourself to a sudden stop when you’ve finished your work out. Your body isn’t prepared to quit as quickly as you might be, and a sudden stop could cause cramps, dizziness, or even fainting. Slow to a stop by lightly doing whatever activity you’ve been doing, just at a slower pace.

Stretching
This softens and relaxes your muscles, allowing them to handle the extra stress you have put on them during your work out. Well-stretched joints are less likely to strain, or sprain. Even if you only have time for a quick stretch, doing it after your workout is key.
Make the most of your routine by including all four steps, and embrace your inner supermodel.

PolkaDot it just might have been. We need to get you back to where you were berore you quit smoking. I am so proud of you for making that lifestyle change, now it's time for one more! We can do this....one foot in front of the other.

Making progress with exercise

posted by bethy87 on 10:05 am

Everyday I have been pushing my kids in the stroller and walking two miles except the days my husband is home and he pushes the stroller and I run two miles......anyways lol I have had two big accomplishments. I ran two miles the other day in a better time than when I was in the Army!! Yay for me and yesterday I actually jogged pushing the stroller for a 1 mile.....it was tough but I did it and I am just so very happy because slowly but surely I AM DOING IT!!!!

by freyja5683 on Jun 1, 2011 at 10:22 am

Woohoo! Way to got Beth. You are doing an amazing job and you should be so proud of yourself. You beat your ARMY time and that is a not an easy task I am sure. Great job, keep it up!

by screaminz2002 on Jun 2, 2011 at 5:01 am

Beating the Army time is quite an accomplishment! Thats what has got me in trouble right off the bat lol. It's hard to run a sub 7 minute mile after 10 years of doing nothing lol.. Congrats on doing that!

by Former Member on Jun 2, 2011 at 7:55 am

WTG, Beth!!  Yes, you are doing it!

I am no longer obese today

posted by screaminz2002 on 4:54 am

Hello all! Typed up this nice little hello thing a while back. Forgot to put in the subject so it erased it all So I just have been checking in to see what was happening every few days. Anyway on to my news.
189.9 this morning for my weekly weigh in puts me into the fat category, woohoo! Made it by .1
Started at 202.8 two weeks ago. Since then I went to far to fast on exercise and the doctor tells me I have patellar tendinitis in both knees plus a strained right quad. So I have been fighting through the 3 hours worth of rehab stretching a day and still trying to get some exercise time in. Doesn't leave a lot of time for anything else. Just got to keep telling myself the sacrifice is worth the gain! Can't wait until I am in the normal range and I can really start trying to tone my abs and chest. It's great seeing progress every day. I no longer look in the mirror and feel bad. All I see now is potential.

Anyway just wanted to toot my own horn for a few. Thanks for reading!

Thinking about running

posted by freyja5683 on 11:28 am

So I have been thinking about trying to run. However with shin splints that have plagued me for a while now I am just starting out at being able to walk like I used to for 40 minutes without any issues. But I am thinking about trying it out and seeing how it goes. If anyone else might be interested here is good link to a beginner article:
http://zenhabits.net/beginners-guide-to-running/

by Marz2922 on May 26, 2011 at 12:20 pm

I've been using C25K (Couch to 5K).  You start out slow, 5 min warm up walk, and you alternate 8 sets of jogging for 60 seconds and walking for 90 seconds with a 5 minute cool down walk.  You do this particular exercise 3 times a week for 2 weeks. Then, it gets a little harder during week 3 and all the way up to 9 weeks.  You're supposed to be able to run a 5K (3 miles) without stopping at the end of the 9 weeks.
Sounds great on paper, but for those of us with shin splints, it is pretty hard.  I am really trying to keep up, this week I completed Week 1, Day 3 and have yet to start on the new week because of my legs.  I just need to suck it up!

by freyja5683 on May 26, 2011 at 12:36 pm

I've heard about this time and again, guess I am gonna have to check it out and see if maybe I can incorporate it into what I am trying to do. Thank you for the suggestion, remember to ice several times a day when you can and to stretch, then start back slowly.
