Protection?

posted by Patrickpain on 10:03 am

I'm getting ready to put 20 miles in tonight. I'm a little nervous because there have been a lot of attacks on the trail. My brother fell victim a month ago to an attack on the trail. Any advice on protection?

by CATFISH1 on Oct 8, 2008 at 8:56 am

If your state allows it get a ccw. Then get the camel pack mule it has storage where you can place it, and it’s attached to your person. So if some one pushes you off your bike at least you have it. But remember it’s for protection only not because some punk tries to fight you. Hope this helped.

by ChadDavis on Oct 8, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Catfish, what is a CCW?

Thanks Chad

by bikeninja on Oct 9, 2008 at 12:30 pm

i hope its not a gun.a paint ball gun would be nice.

by CATFISH1 on Oct 9, 2008 at 8:25 pm

CCW stands for carrying a concealed weapon in most cases it refers to a firearm. I’m a deputy sheriff therefore I am required by policy to have my off duty weapon where ever I go. Most states allow you to apply for a CCW permit, in which they do a background check and you complete a basic firearms course. I strongly believe if you are a law abiding citizen then you should get your CCW if your state allows it, and obtain some good firearms training.

by ktmdan350 on Oct 10, 2008 at 3:43 pm

I agree! I live in an area that it is really dangerous to ride at night, but my schedule often requires it. I have my concealed weapons permit and some times carry a small 22 cal. when I ride at night. Ofcourse this isn't for everyone, the mase is a great substitute.

Is ther a good format for using Excel to chart your rides? Or is there a better system for keeping track of the numbers that I get from my rides? It would be cool to graph the numbers out to see my progress!

by CompuTech007 on Sep 22, 2008 at 9:21 pm

I use CycliStats ($45 US), MotionBased (Garmin coop project) and Garmin Training center.

SportTracks (free program) it was all right but it didn't work the way I wanted it to.

My Garmin Edge 305 records stats like cadence, average/max speeds, heart rate (avg/max) distance, travel times moving and total. Garmin Training Center and MotionBased both require a compatible sports GPS device.

Tires or tubes?

posted by ktmdan350 on 12:53 am

Ive been having lots of flats lately. Do you think that its better to switch up my tires to a bigger count or to go with the kevlar strips that go in between the tubes and tire?

by CompuTech007 on Sep 13, 2008 at 8:41 am

What size of tire are you currently using? Most generally going with a better tire and keeping the inflation at it's recommended pressure works best.

I guess I should ask is this a road or off road bike? Might want to swap out both if it is an off road bike.

by ktmdan350 on Sep 13, 2008 at 1:24 pm

It is a road bike that has 700x 25c Kenda tires. I check my pressure with a floor pump ever time I go out on a ride. I'm not even sure if its glass or other debri that is causing the flats but it is driving me crazy. At least Im getting better at changing tubes and hanging at the bike shop more often!

by cal27sailor on Sep 13, 2008 at 3:14 pm

You can put liners in your tires. I used these for years with no problems. The last couple of years I used tires with Kevlar built into them. Currently using Continentals. I prefer this route. Make sure that you are inflating to the maximum...at least 110-120. Most punctures are caused by the pinching of underinflated tires.

Tony

by bikeninja on Sep 17, 2008 at 4:05 pm

i run my tires no more then 100 psi ever.i had one flat in 4 years.i use continentals.every once in a while use the palm of your hand, with gloves on.and hold it on the tire to remove any debre do both tires.becareful on the rear.you dont want to stick your hand in the spokes.this is an old school tip.

Lance racing this weekend

Armstrong to race again this weekend

By Sue George @ Cyclingnews.com

Just a few days after formally announcing his comeback to the sport of professional cycling, Lance Armstrong will participate in another mountain bike race, the 12 hours of Snowmass in Snowmass, Colorado.

"Armstrong will race as a member of a three-person team along with local Max Taam and another person yet to be named," said promoter and long-time Subaru / Gary Fisher pro mountain biker Nat Ross.

by CompuTech007 on Sep 10, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Wow, it's all true. It's great that he's going back to racing but the fact of the committment he has made to cancer awareness and research. I'm very proud of him for making this decision.

Hey if a 49 year old woman can still race and WIN at the Olympics. If he doesn't win the TDF he'll still be a winner in the cancer awareness and research race.

Cheers!

by cal27sailor on Sep 11, 2008 at 7:42 am

I think its great! You should read the article on Vanity Fair.com to understand his reasoning. It will really bring the fight on cancer to center stage. The next US administration will be hard pressed to cut funding for the fight against cancer, unlike the current one. Allez Lance, Allez!

Tony

by bikeninja on Sep 12, 2008 at 8:32 am

he is doing so much more off the bike.saying he is using this as a way to spread the word of cancer is bull!!he wants to prove all 7 tour wins were clean.its kind of selfish.he has passed the torch, now he is going to take it back.not good.plus the astana government and its suporters are kicking in a ton of money to theLAF.that helps.dont do it lance.

by ChadDavis on Sep 21, 2008 at 5:45 pm

I certainly can't blame the world's winningest cyclist for missing the sport at only 37 years old. Why people might have a problem with this I don't grasp.

Three of my closest friends are cancer survivors and I will always be a supporter of cancer research. Whether or not Cancer Awareness is the real goal isn't so important. He will certainly accomplish his stated goal.

by ChadDavis on Sep 21, 2008 at 5:45 pm

As for his cycling career, it isn't like he is a washed up old boxer who can't see that his glory years are gone; he went out winning and he wants to keep competing. So what is wrong with that. Let the young cyclists set their sights on him and try to beat him. Only time will tell whether Lance will still be on top.

by ChadDavis on Sep 21, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Not to mention, that Lance Armstrong IS a cyclist. He has trained since childhood and competed at the highest levels. When he retired, he stepped away from a huge part of his identity. We should not be surprised that he wants it back.

I have the Trek computer (low end one) its basic just gives you speed, average speed, distance, and time. It works well for me only 50 bucks I am thinking about upgrading to the polar one though I hear those are nice.

by bikerdoug on Jul 23, 2008 at 5:28 am

I have a Polar CS200 and I love it. It combines speed, average speed, distance, time, time spent in your defined HR zone, time spend above/below, avg HR, max HR. I wish I had cadence though. I've had good luck with Cateye and Trek as well...not so good luck with Vetta.

Ricco gets nailed

posted by CATFISH1 on 5:58 am

This is such a shame. Why is it we can never get through a TDF without 3 or more dopers? It just isn’t the same without Lance, at least he made it fun to watch even when we were hit with the lows of dopers. I hope this is the end of the dopers this year. I really liked and was impressed with Ricco now I feel let down. Unreal

by ktmdan350 on Jul 17, 2008 at 11:46 am

It is dissapointing to see this happen! You think that the riders who got busted would have enough love for the sport to not contribute to the abuse that cycling already recieves! Even though there are all the other riders who have passed thier drug tests, these few riders who did not are the ones who will over shadow what some people think about the sport. It is really too bad!

cadance

posted by linnypooh36 on 6:18 am

How do you find your candance?

by CATFISH1 on Jul 9, 2008 at 7:57 am

I found mine using the gym spin bike and when I’m riding on my road bike I use the swag (scientific wild *** guess) method haha. But in all seriousness the gym bike helped. You can purchase a speed, distance, time, and cadence computer. The computer that features cadence will not be wireless unless you spend a lot of $$.

by derailleur on Jul 9, 2008 at 10:22 am

You should be able to ride in a wide range of cadences; this is your "power band". The discontinuous gear ratios mean you'll rarely be in a targeted cadence for given wind and hill and traffic, so having a wide power band will keep you from stumbling. I have a Garmin 305 now, but I used to just count revs per 6 seconds and multiply by 10.

by linnypooh36 on Jul 9, 2008 at 1:29 pm

so is your candance in spinning class going to be different than it would be if your out riding on the road?

by CATFISH1 on Jul 9, 2008 at 1:41 pm

I find mine stay relatively the same unless I encounter resistance such as wind or a hill.

by arno on Jul 10, 2008 at 2:01 am

Polar has some very good bike computers that measure cadance. I use the CS200cad that allows connection to a PC. It was cheap and does the job perfect. And it's wireless! I used it on my MTB and it handled the bumps with no problems. Now its on the Road bike. It does allow for 2 bikes on the same computer but a MTB is no place for fancy toys.

Help

Hello all any tips for improving over all average speed???? I live in Fl so its kind of hard to find hills any help would be great!

by bikeninja on Jul 8, 2008 at 1:40 pm

i live in south texas.we also dont have much hilss.i do wind traing.use the wind.we get a good amount here.i travel to europe at least once a year.i have climbed most of the tour climbs.and that has been my traing.wind can be a great training tool.its usualy always there.it will make you suffer like nothing else.i also run, doing intervals has helped with weights at the local YMCA.it works for me.

by Pathman on Jul 8, 2008 at 1:48 pm

Wind is your best bet, but is not exactly the same. Another option is a stationary with blocks under the fork/front tire to simulate the climbing position.

For overall speed, probably go to power training. That takes special equipment. Heart rate next best. I use the Chris Carmicheal training planning from "The Ultimate Ride" and "The Lance Armstrong Performance Program".

by arno on Jul 8, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Speed is linked to how fast you turn the cranks. For road cycling you need to have a cadance between 90 - 100. Make sure you can maintain this speed and then start using higher gears. I've been doing mountain biking and am regularly reminding myself to gear down on the road bike.
