Life Imitating Art--or TV, at least

posted by cgm230 on 1:28 pm

Oh my goodness. Anyone here watch Sex and the City? And by any chance remember the last couple of episodes in Paris? In one of the two--I think it was the last one--Carrie is moping around Paris because her boyfriend is ignoring her, and there are some really charming dialogue-less shots that are meant to sum up her experience. In one of them she's in a cafe and turns to see a giant boxer-or bulldog-like dog that's sitting on the chair next to her, one table over, and they just sort of look at each other, eye-to-eye.

Anyway, I was walking into the grocery store, and the door I use makes you walk past all of the registers before going into the store proper, and there was this little girl--maybe 10?--with one of those little silver scooter things. And she was sort of hanging on the handlebar with her chin resting on it and just staring. And when I rounded the corner, there was a HUGE Dogue-de-Bordeaux-ish dog just staring right back at her from where it was tied up about three feet away.

They weren't in Laduree and the kid wasn't wearing couture, but it was JUST like the scene. People were stopping just to sort of look at the two of them, even though all they were doing was staring. It was really, really adorable. It put a smile on my face, and hopefully if you can picture what I'm talking about, you can get some of that smile, too!

New Dog, New behaviors to correct...

posted by erin384 on 3:21 pm

We adopted a new dog last week.   He is a year old and already 80 lbs!  The pound thought that he is a lab/mastiff mix but we suspect he may just be a total mutt!  So he appears to have had NO training or socialization.  His biggest problem right now is that he is really mouthy.  He is always trying to put his mouth on my husband and me.  While he is not biting us, this is still not acceptable behavior, especially around some of our non dog friends.  So I am looking to you all to help!  How to I train him so he knows that it is never okay to put his teeth on humans?

by cgm230 on November 18th 2009 at 3:52 pm

Aww...I have a soft spot for great big puppies!

The best anti-mouthing trick I know is to squeal. Seriously: let out a high-pitched whimper, pull away, and then ignore your dog completely for a couple of minutes. It's how his litter-mates and puppy friends would have taught him not to bite: first by crying that it hurts, and then by refusing to play because he was 'mean.' And the upside is that it works even when he's not technically really biting, because dogs learn pretty quickly what kinds of play their pack won't tolerate.

Even our Juliette, who is amazingly hard-headed when it comes to 'digging' pillows and sticking her face in the dishwasher, picked this one up in record time. The only caveat I've seen is that if the dog has dominant/aggressive tendancies to start with, the tactic can backfire. So you just want to keep an eye out; his reaction to your yelp should be along the lines of shame, concern, or confusion. If he seems proud of himself, on the other hand, you may want to bring in a pro!

by Miquela on November 19th 2009 at 7:48 am

Erin, I'm with cg, behave the way a pack memeber would.  I had an Akita, a breed that is well known for aggression (not sure it's rightfully so), and VERY powerful.  From the time he was a baby, I always 'yiped' if he put his mouth on me.  He learned quickly that no form of mouth contact was ok.  One day, a guy I had started dating, grabbed my Akita by the rear haunches, to pull him out of a dog fight.  Samson, my Akita, spun around and grabbed the guy's forearm, but as soon as he saw that it was a person, he didn't bite down, didn't break the skin.  I know it sounds bad that Samson was in a dog fight, but here's what happened....the dogs I had, were all good listeners and I would let them go from the house to the truck, off leash.  Well, this particular day, I opened the door and there was a dog, right on the porch!  I guess Samson saw it as defending his pack and territory, because he jumped on the dog.  As far as if the squeeling doesn't have the desired effect, well, then maybe try 'biting' him back (with your finger tips, like the Dog whisperer) and then ignoring him.  Dogs are amazingly smart though, I bet he'll figure it out if you just ignore him and refuse to give him any attention every time he mouths you. Good for you for saving his precious little (or big, LOL) life!

Oh, I can't see the pictures, is it just me?

Edited by Miquela, on November 19th, 2009 at 7:48 am.

by bratgrr1 on November 19th 2009 at 9:58 am

I can't see the pics either :(
But I agree with the above tactics.

by becks888 on November 19th 2009 at 11:18 am

We used the squeeling method on both our dogs and they picked it up right away.

CGM:  gunner and scout both dig into pillows and love sticking their heads in the dishwasher to see what they can lick up!  juliette would be their best friend!!!

by erin384 on November 19th 2009 at 7:10 pm

Thank you everyone for the feed back!  I dont know how to make the pictures work...

by erin384 on November 20th 2009 at 5:22 am

I do have photos of the dog(s) on my profile... The yellow dog is the new one.  I think that he is too dominate for the yelping, but the Cesar Millan "biting" back, then ignoring after he has submitted, may work.  We will see!

Oh My God

posted by cgm230 on 10:37 am

I ran into a hunter on lookout this morning in our new forest. Apparently now through March is freaking BOAR SEASON.

I'm all for keeping the population of wild boars down (apparently one killed a man in this town last year, and there have been sightings and traffic accidents, etc.). And they seem really well organized, with warning signs and lookouts and a rotational schedule. But I can't seem to find any official boar-season info online, so I have no idea if there are other, less official hunters out there.  And I wear a big white coat and call to the dogs all the time, and Jolie's mostly white and listens well, but Juliette blends into the fall foliage and tends to go off in her own little world, and what if someone I don't know is there doesn't realize she's a dog??

Not to mention the fact that now I'm terrified of running into a freaking wild boar in the woods...this new town is getting a whole lot less fun!

by Miquela on November 17th 2009 at 1:50 pm

Maybe you should invest in orange jackets for you and the pups!  I don't know how populated the forest is with boars, but you certainly don't want to run into one, the pups might not know better than to get close.  Wow, that's scary, be carefull!

by MMGambone4894 on November 17th 2009 at 5:17 pm

omg! Yes orange jackets, and bells around their collars...this may help keep the boar at bay...if they hear a noise they may run instead of coming closer...like bears? idk.... oh goodness now i'm going to worry about you guys out there... Marla

by bratgrr1 on November 17th 2009 at 6:57 pm

Please be careful.  I can't bear to go through another heartache with you :(  So be really really careful!!!

by sabrosa1411 on November 17th 2009 at 11:38 pm

do you own the land? you can always post private property signs, if not, definitely go with the bright colored jackets!

by cgm230 on November 18th 2009 at 2:26 am

Hi--thanks for the replies! I feel a lot better after sleeping on it, because at some point I realized that just because I'm new here, that doesn't mean that other people don't know what's going on. So I scouted out the woods today (it's a national forest, sabrosa; I'd kill to have a back yard like that!!), and there was 1) no hunt-in-progress sign, 2) horseback police on patrol like usual, and 3) plenty of dogs (off-leash) and even some little kids racing around.

So it's good to know the boars are out there, but I don't think it's time to panic. I tend to stay on the main paths where the undergrowth has been cut back on both sides, and we do make a fair amount of noise wherever we go (my dogs obey best when they get a lot of verbal check-ins, plus they spend most of the time beating on each other). And I'll just have to stay extra-alert...and look into some collar-bells; what a good idea!!  :-)

Laying near the fireplace although there was no fire in it....

Eye see you....(his eye was swollen due to an insect bite (?) or something.

Aww...I love Hershey photos. He has such personality!!

by Miquela on November 17th 2009 at 1:57 pm

Yes, Hershey if a cutie.  Poor baby got a bite?  One time, Trouble looked like a boar!  For some reason, her face swelled along the jawline, she really looked like a boar.  I have no idea why, but it went away on its own.

by cgm230 on November 17th 2009 at 1:59 pm

Dogs can look like boars at random?????  *collapses in a dead faint*

oh he is sooo cute! I'm sorry to hear about his eye... good luck with that... Marla

by bratgrr1 on November 17th 2009 at 6:57 pm

Thanks! His eye is perfectly fine.  We keep steroids and benadryl on hand for that purpose.  He is deathly allergic to bites/stings.  So one day later and his eye was back to normal.  This picture doesn't do it justice.  He is such a sweetie and I am so happy to have him.

Winter

posted by Miquela on 7:44 am

Well, it's feeling like winter here in Albuquerque, New Mexico.....I'm not such a fan.  The heater runs a lot at night, and it was 31 degrees this morning!  So, I put pellets in the pellet stove for Romeo.  He's so cute!  After I fed them this morning, he came straight back to the bedroom and curled up on the dog bed.  I started the pellet stove and when I came out of the bathroom, all of the pups were on the dog bed.  I picked Booger up and carried him out to the TV room and showed him that the pellet stove was on, then I set him down on the dog bed in front of it. He immediately shook, like to get rid of the chilly air that was trapped in his thin little coat.  All three pups stayed by the pellet stove while I got ready for work, they'r so sweet, I just want to curl up on the doggie beds with them.  Oh, by the way, they all slept on the floor (doggie beds) last night, not on my bed, LOL.  I put my heating pad on to keep me warm.  I think I need to go pick up some more pellets, I had about 4 or 5 bags left from last winter, but that will only last a few days.

by becks888 on November 17th 2009 at 9:07 am

what is a pellet heater?

we had our first really cold night of the season last night.  down in the 40's.  I didn't turn on our heater b/c it makes the house stuffy.  i sure was regretting that when i had to get out of my warm cozy bed!!!!!

by Miquela on November 17th 2009 at 1:56 pm

A pellet stove?  It's just a self contained fireplace, basically.  Only, instead of putting wood in it, like cut logs, you use pellets.  They are commercially manufactured; I think they take saw dust (basically) and add some sort of bonding agent and make them into little pellets, like a large rabit terd, LOL.  No, they are about 2 inches long and thinner than a pencil.  The pellet stove has a reservoir that you load (mine can hold @ 40 lbs) and it slowly drops them into a little fire pit, where they burn and then a blower pushes the warm air out into the house.  You can set the speed of the pellet feed, and the strength of the blower.  40 lbs of pellets will last me about 20 hours; but I mostly just run it in the morning so Booger won't get cold.  It's kind of handy, but I suppose you could find a more economical / less effort electric heater.  Oh, and you can run them on 'no burn' nights.  I don't know if everyone has 'no burn' nights, but when ever the weather system is stagnant, they tell you you can't run your fireplace because of the air polution.

by bratgrr1 on November 17th 2009 at 7:01 pm

I started to ask what a pellet stove was but didn't.  And I've never heard of no-burn nights.  The pellet stove sounds fantastic!

Its so good to be able to post blogs again!!  Expect lots of posts from me!!!  Here are some new pics (sorry about the poor picture quality...they're from my phone)
We got Scout a new bed

but he usually uses it as a butt pillow

Gunner hinting that its time to play fetch (though they're not too good at bringing it back to me)

Going for a more obvious approach:

Getting Scout in on the begging:

Gunner giving me his puppy face (which i fall for every time):

I threw it and they never brought it back.  But Gunner chased scout around the house with it for about 15 minutes.

by allie0212 on November 16th 2009 at 9:12 am

Gunner and Scout are so incredibily ADORABLE!  They remind me so much of my little ones.  We have the same problem, though.  We throw the ball or toy and never get it back but it seems to entertain them just fine.  Thanks for sharing!  They are just so dang cute!!!

by cgm230 on November 16th 2009 at 9:59 am

Yay!!!  I guess new admins will just have to be honorary from now on, or at least until Livestrong is bug-free. *crickets chirping*

In the meantime, Scout's "butt pillow" photo keeps cracking me up all over again every time I scroll.  :-D

by Miquela on November 16th 2009 at 12:47 pm

Yay Becky!  It's great to see new pics, Scout and Gunner look quite happy.  Romeo has a 'look' too, only we call it his "I'm so cute, you won't do anything to me" look.  They're so much fun.

It has a forest:

(That's Juliette taunting Jolie with Jolie's tennis ball...)

(...and that's Jolie losing her cool.)

Unfortunately, Jolie managed to cut her paw on something, and it was bleeding pretty heavily. I was very impressed with the way that she let me wash it: it must have hurt, but it was like she understood what I was doing. She kept lifting it and letting me turn it and didn't complain once. Then I let her lick it for a while, but it was still bleeding a little when she walked, so we taped a sock onto her paw:

It only took her a couple of tries to figure out how to walk with it on, and then she click-click-click-thumped around like the trooper that she is.

We felt a little guilty about uprooting them, so on a recent trip to Ikea we picked up a couple of giant stuffed animals for them to tear apart, which is something that they both enjoy almost as much as running in the woods. We thought we were getting one for each, but the shark seemed to really get on both of their nerves:

That blur in the upper-right corner is Jolie. I took five photos of this scene; there's not one where they're both still enough to be remotely in focus.

Anyway, the tiger seems to have gotten a reprieve for now...maybe because it's such cozy camouflage?

by becks888 on November 16th 2009 at 7:32 am

i love this!!!  how cute!!  you have such a wonderful camera, it always takes really good pictures.   i wish my "post to blog" button worked so i could post new pics of my babies

i wouldn't feel bad about uprooting them.  it looks like they have an amazing playground to explore!

by cgm230 on November 16th 2009 at 7:43 am

Thanks! Is it working now, by any chance? I've long suspected it was the admin thing doing it...and I miss those little beagle faces!!!

by becks888 on November 16th 2009 at 8:18 am

YUP!!!  Its working!!!!!

by Miquela on November 16th 2009 at 12:52 pm

I agree, I don't think you need to feel bad about uprooting them, all they want is to be where you are.  You could live in a cardboard box in the middle of NY City, and they would be happy just to be with you.  But, it looks like they have lots of safe places to play and run, so I'm sure they'll be super happy.  The Tiger pic is adorable.

by MMGambone4894 on November 16th 2009 at 6:20 pm

so cute! Love them!

by bratgrr1 on November 17th 2009 at 7:47 am

Aww I bet they love it!  and they seem to like the stuffed animals too!  Hershey carried around a pink bear for a week or 2 until he shook it so much the head started coming apart from the body. I need to sew it back together.

hello all, I have 2 dogs that are Lhasa Apso/poodle mixes.  Jake we got from a family that couldn't handle his "little dog" attitude.  We got Sam-bone from the pound, he had been abandoned at a boat dock--he's deaf and quite the little trooper.

Welcome to the group! It sounds like you have your hands full with those two. It's so wonderful when people take in animals that their first owners can't handle, for whatever reason. Yay you! :-)

The Move

posted by cgm230 on 11:53 am

Hi everyone!

I've been unexpectedly off-line for a couple of weeks, because we moved apartments and French bureaucracy is unbelievable. I've missed this group!!!

In the meantime, we've more or less gotten the dogs settled in the new place. They came here a few times before moving day, although they didn't much like it (they don't seem to realize that the huge forest two blocks away depends on our living here!).

When we did the last big push to get everything into boxes the day before the movers came, Jolie seemed to realize that this was way, way bigger than just one of us going on a trip, and they were both a little nuts from then on. They wouldn't even ride in the car with my husband, which was our Plan A for keeping them away from movers, heavy things, and open doors. So he took them for a long walk instead, and then just sat with them in the car for a couple of hours (in the cold--Jolie flipped whenever he started the engine) while I directed the move.

We got them here and set up a crate (left open!) in the bathroom, but that's when the beagle got crazed. Our Juliette is a little claustrophobic, and I guess the dark made it worse (they used to sleep in the kitchen, which had a window). About two days in I found blood on the floor when I let them out in the morning, and we realized that she'd either been licking or chewing her muzzle until it was raw! We tried leaving her in there for half an hour the next day, and it was worse. Poor baby!!!

Eventually we figured out that if we leave a short stretch of hallway open to them with the light on, she's fine, and now her muzzle is down to a light pink with no more open places. But in the meantime we'd started training them to sleep in our bedroom without sleeping in our bed, which they'd never done before. They sort of get it now, although Jolie is an eternal optimist--I had a dream last night that she was stomping around on my neck and shoulder for about ten minutes before settling in beside me under the covers. And when I woke up a minute later, guess where she was? Juliette is more willing to stay off the bed now that she's allowed to stay where she can see us, but if we oversleep she wanders over and sticks her nose in my husband's hand until he "just happens to wake up all on his own." Clever girl!

by MMGambone4894 on November 15th 2009 at 2:16 pm

funny girl that she is...! Puma does the same thing,...the boys aren't allowed in bed while we are sleeping...but by about 9-10 am puma is on the bottom and by about 1030 he's up top nuzzling or licking oh so subtley...(not really) to let you know he is now ready to get up and start his day...now mind you my husband comes to bed about 3-4 am....so they are out late, have access to water etc...but he just doesnt want to sleep so why should we?

I just transitioned Gunner and Scout to non-bed sleeping in our bedroom.  I bought them each a little "donut bed"  (thats what i call the beds that are shaped like a donut instead of just the regular pillows).  Scout took right to it.  Gunner on the other hand still waits to see if i'll let him on the bed.   What i found works best is saying "get in your bed" and waiting for them to snuggle up in their donut beds.   Then i go over there and pet them and give them lots of love for 5 minutes.  Usually Scout falls asleep during this time and Gunner usually fights it.   But they love getting loved on, so it gives them a reason to want to get into their beds.  Its worked really great.

LOL, I keep trying to teach my three to sleep on their doggie beds, instead of on my bed.  I usually make it for a week or two, but then I break down and let them up because I like to cuddle with them!  They usually 'go to bed' when I tell them to, I'm the one who won't give it up.

Miquela, I know what you mean! My husband and I have both had moments where we just want to give in, although we mostly keep each other honest. Now he's traveling, though, and I didn't even try last night! They'll hop down and snuggle into their area (an open crate for Jolie, who likes crates, plus lots of blankets outside it for Juliette, who's claustrophobic) if I say "No, go to bed"....but I can't seem to bring myself to say it!

PRAYERS

posted by MCas on 9:07 am

Please pray for my dear friend, Fnmchic and her family.  Her dog, Miesie, was just diagnosed yesterday with an advanced cancer and was given only 6 weeks to live.  They are completely devastated and confused by this information.  Miesie comes home from the vet tomorrow so they can all love her up a bunch!  Thanks everyone!

by cgm230 on November 14th 2009 at 10:44 am

How awful! We're thinking of them, and there's lots of puppy love coming from my girls!

by MMGambone4894 on November 15th 2009 at 2:19 pm

oh thats so sad...my moms dog just got diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on her leg at about 15 years old...she lived through the surgery to take it off...(we only did it because the mass broke open and was getting infected, otherwise we would have not done it and just kept her happy and comfortable) anyway, we got it mostly out, and its healing nicely, but its only a matter of time...we don't want to do chemo etc because she is really happy right now, and thats all we want for her.... tell your friend we are thinking of her... Marla and the boys...

by allie0212 on November 16th 2009 at 9:21 am

I'm so sorry--we are thinking of them.  I can't imagine how hard that has to be.  My little ones send lots of puppy love and kisses!

by Miquela on November 16th 2009 at 12:43 pm

It's awful, our babies should live for ever, but for some reason, God seems to have a different plan.  My last two dogs have lost their lives to cancer, so I'll send good wishes.

Can this be real?

posted by Miquela on 1:44 pm

OK, now this one is a dog video.  We all love our little babies and think that they are the cutest, smartest, etc.  but this you have to see!  Even if the end result isn't true, it's amazing!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= ofpYRITtLSg&NR=1

by MCas on November 14th 2009 at 9:10 am

I saw this on the news a while back.  The comments on Youtube said that the injured dog died, but on the news they said he lived!  It is amazing!  But very sad that the person who hit the dog didn't pull over.

Touching

posted by Miquela on 12:12 pm

This has nothing to do with dogs (it does have horses), but I just received an e-mail with this clip attached.  I like it so much, I went to look for it on Youtube, just so I could tell you to go watch it.  I don't work for Budweiser, or even drink beer, but the comercial is touching, go watch it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4yfivS8S Ws It's a 9/11 tribute, no one should forget.  Remember to be forgiving and patient with the personnel who work to keep us safe (airport security, etc.)

This is the first time I ever saw this commercial.  It actually gave me the chills!  I love all the Anheuser Busch commercials...it's basically why I watch the superbowl!  LOL

My little pack

posted by Miquela on 8:37 am

LOL, do you remember when I babysat for my friends' dogs?  Well, I finally got around to downloading the pictures from my camera!  This is a pic with my three kids and the 2 visitors (Lacey, MJ, Trouble,Roxie, and Romeo).  Lacey, Trouble, and Romeo are my kids, and MJ and Roxie are my friends' dogs.  Romeo and MJ DID NOT get along for the first week, then they made nice and started playing together.  I wish I could post videos, they were really funny.

i think once you paste in using the little mountain picture button you can resize it.  just drag it from a corner.

What a cute pack!  How are the other 2 dogs doing?

by Miquela on November 12th 2009 at 10:37 am

MJ & Roxie are doing well.  Their dad, Mark, says that Roxie gets up and runs to the door, like, "can we go to Miquela's house?".  MJ is still a very rowdy youngin', so she gets into trouble sometimes, but I think they are both doing well.  I just spoke to their dad this afternoon, and he mentioned that they were allowing the dogs to sleep in their room!!!!  Yay, I didn't tell him that I had let them sleep in my room while they were gone.

Too cute!  How did you get them all to hold still long enough to capture the pic?

by Tenjin on November 12th 2009 at 7:51 pm

Cute Dogs, Lacey is a cool name (I have a Chiwawa named Lacey). I'm not to good at telling what kind of dogs people have. What kind are they?

by Miquela on November 13th 2009 at 11:59 am

It took a few tries, but I just put them back in their spot if they moved, they got the idea.
Lacey - Red heeler mix?
MJ - Black lab
Trouble - Black lab mix
Roxie - Beagle
Romeo (AKA Booger)- Basenji
