I have never gone all the way down on squats...
How important is it to go all the way down?
If I don't the full 90 degrees am I wasting my time?
I had always heard that going too deep could cause back strain. Is that not true or do you just need to take extra care and use a weight belt to prevent that sort of strain?
WCL
if I do them too deep I feel strain in my knees (I don't usually have knee issues, but don't want to start them!) and also in my back (which is weak, but getting better)
So, I usually do my squats on the machines where you are either on an incline or laying down . Seems to be better positioning for me
ANY exercise can be a strain on your back.
Belts can be useful, but many find them unnecessary or even a hinderance.
GOOD FORM! TECHNIQUE! That's the key to good squats.
It is one of the most dangerous exercises there is. I HIGHLY recommend that you get training from a real pro on how to squat properly. HIGHLY recommend it. HIGHLY.
I've had my share of back injuries as a kid (motocross, BMX, skateboarding, skiing) so I hear you LOUD and clear.

Well short of the target muscles hurting nothing is out of the ordinary... I must be doing something right

I went to a RKC kettle bell workshop a few weeks ago and
David Whitley showed me how to become more flexible in my squats. You can probably search around with "Pavel" in Google and find out how to stretch your hips.
If you don't have back issues, you are most likely tight in your hips and you need to begin stretching them to gain flexibility.
If you are tight across your chest/arms (while the bar is on your traps) you need to perform some rotation with a pole/pvc pipe.
