New with Questions

posted by mrsshady on 9:50 am

Hi! I am new to this group, although I have been on Dailyplate for several years off and on. I am a first time mom to a 9.5 month old (my pride and joy) and was recently diagnosed with post partum thyroiditis (basically a super sluggish and low thyroid) and was put on medication for it. I have been trying to lose the baby weight and get back to a healthy weight/ size and fitness level. My questions...
1) I have A LOT of excess pudge in my  belly, especailly my lower belly (still look about 4 months pregnant!). What  are some at-home exercises I can do to help eliminate that and tighten up the muscles (I had a C-Section).
2) I am a stay at home mom and part time substitute teacher on a pretty tight budget. I want to incorporate more weight training in but I don't have access to a gym with weight machines. Any tips?
3) I really want to lose inches AND pounds but I am not sure the best ratio of cardio/weight training (time is of the essence as some days I only have 30 minutes to workout- ALTHOUGH I have been trying to log at least 60 minutes)
4) I am doing the 100 Pushup Challenge with my hubby for the fun of it and have a lot of wrist trouble as a result of injuries during cheerleading. What can I do to strengthen my wrists? I am on Week 2 Day 3 today and my wrists are killing me!
5) I need to lose inches all over however beyond my belly, my trouble spot is my upper inner thighs. I would love to learn some great leg exercises to strengthen and slim my legs, especially the jiggly inner thigh!
Any other tips to help me get back into shape would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats on your baby!  I have a son who is almost 16 months old and they are so amazing, aren't they?  I LOVE being a mommy!  That said, I didn't love the baby weight.  LOL  I also had a c-section and I am happy to report I am in better shape now than I was pre-pregnancy!

I work out at home.  I have some dumbbells and a ton of workout DVDs.  Jackie Warner, Jillian Michaels, and Bob Harper are my favorite people and I got their DVDs on Amazon.com for under $10 each.  I swear they have whipped me into shape all from the comfort of my own living room.  :-)  I work out 6-7 days a week for at least 30 minutes but I really try to get 60 or more, depending on what I am doing that day.  I do a lot of full body workouts and I strength train most days (but that's mostly because I love it).  I do cardio as well but I have found that for me, strength training was the key to losing the fat and bringing back my muscle.
A couple of sets of dumbbells are pretty cheap and resistance bands are great and also pretty inexpensive.  You can even google exercises and put together your own routines if you don't want to buy DVDs (although I highly recommend them).
As for your legs, beyond the workout DVDs, squats and lunges have done wonders for me.  Also, jump squats and jump lunges really do a number on you (in a good way)!
Let's see...as for your wrists, they will get stronger the more you do pushups. I also recommend doing planks.  Some people like to use wrist braces but honestly, I just found mine got stronger over time just from working them more.  I'm sure other people here might have some suggestions beyond that.

Glad you joined the group and again, congrats!

Thank you so much for the advice! It is great to hear from another Mom! Like you, I absolutely adore being a Mommy and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I would love to get rid of this baby weight though. I do have 30 Day Shred and Tummy Tone Party Zone but would like to invest in a couple more DVDs. I recently started doing the Zumba DVD twice a week with some girls from my church and I love it. I will definitely add to my dumbells (I currently have a 1.5 lb set, a 5 lbs set) when I find a good deal. Resistance bands sound great too. I use my Wii to workout with Wii Fit and I should start doing Fitness Ultimatum and Wii Active again.
I look forward to hearing more suggestions and feel more motivated just from reading that it IS possible to get a fit body after a c-section. :) Thanks!

Welcome!  Happy to have you here.

We can offer you a ton of advice.  First of which is that you don't need a gym to get a good workout.  You can invest very minimally in some home equipment (as stated above), and you can do a bunch of stuff just with the weight of your own body.  Google "Body Weight Exercises" and you'll get plenty of ideas and suggestions.

Just employ the 3 D's... DESIRE (want it), DETERMINATION  (do it), and DEDICATION (keep doing it).

When you train your whole body consistently, eat properly and get the right amount of recovery, the magic will happen.  "Spot Reducing" is a myth.  Fat comes off every person differently.  Just create a good plan and work the plan.  YOU CAN DO IT!

I will definitely employ the 3 D's but I do still have a question about cardio vs strength training. I know both are very important but if I am crunched for time, which should I go with for the best results?

Go for strength training! :-)
