Wahoo!!!!! What a wonderful day!
posted by dirtybirdskyhag on 6:34 pm
Was that a gorgeous ride or what? Perfect weather, beautiful scenery and great course. Does anyone know how to get our chip results? I don't recall how to find that info.

I would imagine an email from the LAF will provide that information. Glad it was yesterday, imagine doing it today with the wind blowing 25mph ;-)

Needing a ride to Dripping Springs Sunday
posted by chornsby74 on 3:35 am
I have tried posting on the Livestrong mesage board, but am still looking for a ride Sunday. I am near the arboretum (183/360) and am willing to help with gas if anyone is interested.

Anyone want to use my reservation at the Outpost Motel in Dripping Springs?
posted by jschaff111 on 9:46 pm
I have a reservation at this motel 2.8 miles from the start line. If anyone wants to take it and save the drive on Sunday morning, let me know.

Parking vouchers?
posted by rensselaer80 on 9:39 pm
It doesn't look like the parking cost is covered at the Austin Convention Center on Friday/Saturday for package pickup. Last year, there were vouchers provided, but I don't see them mentioned this year.
Turns out it was ;-) Just wasn't apparent from the emails.

Logistics Questions
posted by Wafflekyd on 3:37 pm
I have parking and arrival time questions. The website says that due to construction on 290, we should "allow ample travel time" to accommodate for any delays. About what time should riders plan to arrive? Also, I noticed that all parking is at satellite lots, filling Roger Hanks Park first. I didn't see Roger Hanks Park on any of the maps. Is the park just off 290? For those of us who have never been there before, and assuming that we're probably planning to arrive in the dark between 4 and 6 am, will the parking route be well marked?

OK - I asked too soon. My questions were just answered in an in-depth logistical email I received. I assume everyone else received it too. If not, post a note here and I'll get it to you.

Just an FYI for the bike riders.
posted by Hillslug on 8:35 am
In Wimberley, there's one short area that will have more car traffic than normal this year. On Jacob's Well Road between Woodacre (as it's shown on google maps there are two streets named Woodacre but actually, the first one you'll see is Pleasant Valley) and 2325 the traffic might be a little heavier this year. That sub-division is Woodcreek North and Valley Spring road is closed for construction so the only exit for the whole sub-division comes out on Jacob's Well Road. It's only about a mile long section but everyone leaving the subdivision has to go along that road right there and it is a big sub-division. So, be careful and watch for cars. Start watching when you get to where Mount Sharp meets Jacob's Well because a lot of cars are now going out that way. Be careful, Cody

For those that haven't ridden in the area before.
posted by Hillslug on 8:22 am
I live in Wimberley and ride some of the roads that the Challenge will be covering on a regular basis. If you haven't ridden out there and have any questions just let me know. I even have some maps with elevation profiles from my Garmin that I can share on motionbased. I don't have the whole route mapped but I do have one from my house up to Dripping Springs that I made once when pulling my son in his trailer. And I have one from my house to Blanco along 2325 and 165.
Have fun and ride hard.

Thanks Hillslug for offering your expertise. Riders can also find information on the routes and courses on the Challenge website (www.livestrongchallenge.org). Under the Austin heading on the left, there should be a Courses/Routes subsection. That's where you can find maps, cue sheets, and elevation charts for the upcoming Challenge. Happy trails everyone.

Volunteering question
posted by Hillslug on 8:16 am
Are there any other bike ride volunteers out there? This will be my first time volunteering for something like this. I've always been on the other side before riding my bike. I'll be working at rest stop three in Wimberley. It's only 10 days to go and there hasn't been a whole lot of info coming my way yet but I'm sure the organizers are pretty busy.
My question is, does anyone know if I can go straight to the rest stop or do I need to check in up in Dripping Springs first? I'm hoping I can just ride my bike down to the rest stop first thing in the morning.
Well, hope to see you at the rest stop.

What's happening, Hillslug? I like the username. If you haven't received much communication from your rest stop coordinator, I apologize. He/she should be in getting in touch with you soon, but if they don't, then you should feel free to head on out to the rest stop and check in with them there. If you find yourself out there without much to do, feel free to ride on to the high school and stop at the volunteer tent. We'll be more than happy to help you find something to do there. :) Look forward to seeing you next weekend.

Quick question....
posted by dirtybirdskyhag on 7:15 am
Hello Austinites, I'm glad to have found this group! Quick question, when I signed up for LIVESTRONG, I unknowingly signed up for the run/walk. I'm actually doing the 45 mile ride on Sunday. Do ya'll know how to change that online? I'm afraid when I pick up my packet, they will have me a a runner. (I would rather have a root canal that run....)
Happy training & best of luck to everyone!
Shelly

This may be a little late but I found this under the FAQs on the Challenge web site.
14. I registered to ride, but what I'd really like to do is run. Can I switch?
Yes, registered riders who wish to participate as a runner may switch. Please contact LIVESTRONGchallenge@laf.org make this change. All ride-to-run transfers must be requested more than 14 days before your event.
by drtrakas on October 17th 2008 at 12:43 pm
Hey Shelly,
Yes, you can switch. Please send me an email at dylan.trakas@livestrong.org and simply re-express your decision to ride. Just so you know, there is a $250 fundraising requirement that you must meet in order to ride. So, if you're OK with that (and trust me, raising $250 is way cooler and easier than a root canal) then just drop me a line at the above address and we'll get you squared away. Thanks and have a good weekend!

Dylan

Other wonderful resources
posted by drtrakas on 11:41 am
Hey Gang,
Hope everyone is doing well and thanks for joining the group. My name is Dylan Trakas and I am a Fundraising Coordinator on the Challenge Team at the LAF. In a previous post, the my.livestrong.org page was mentioned and I simply wanted to bring it to everyone's attention. On this website, we have made available for you tips on fundraising as well as tools to increase your success, training tips and techniques, and a message board where you may speak with other Austin Challenge participants. I encourage everyone to check it out and to participate in both the my.livestrong.org and livestrong.com forums. Each is a wonderful resource.
Furthermore, the entire Challenge Team is here to help you with whatever you may need. So, please feel free to get in contact with me if you have any questions, and we'll work to get an answer to you as quickly as possible. You may email me directly at dylan.trakas@livestrong.org, or austinchallenge@livestrong.org.
Thanks again everyone for your commitment to this fight, and I look forward to seeing all of you in Austin in a few weeks.
Cheers,
Dylan

Austin Challenge Oct 26

Good Afternoon,
I am new to the group but can not wait to get to Austin for the 5K and Ride Challenges. Could anyone let me know if there is any carpooling being arranged to travel to Dripping Springs on Sunday Morning?
Thanks so much!

Hi Cindy,
the best way to plan any carpooling would be through the Austin message board at my.livestrong.org
There already are a few participants who are trying to organize rides to the start on Sunday, so just post a reply or start a new post. Hope this works out well for you!
by AustinChallenge on October 7th 2008 at 12:10 pm
While conversation has been started on my.livestrong about carpooling, don't worry about bringing up the same topic here too so that you can reach out to as many Challenge participants as possible.
You never know, there may be new users here in the LIVESTRONG.COM group who aren't posting on my.livestrong!

California to Texas
posted by airscout on 2:39 pm
This is my second Livestrong Challenge (Portland last year). I'll be driving out with my family in our RV. Gas prices can't keep us down. I'm looking forward to the drive out there and taking in some sights. I've been to Texas a number of times and love it, I may not come back to California...I'm doing (planning) on the 90 mile ride. Hope to see some fellow Californians' out there in Austin!
