I was wondering what you were going to ride over there!  Great news for you.  I was watching yesterday and saw JB Jr. go down.  So sad to see because he is such a great guy.  The twerp went down twice too and poor Boonen looked like he was going to drop from the pain.  Glad to see that he made the cut and can start today if he is up for it.  A real warrior.  As far as Cav goes, yeah, he is a whiner but I was impressed with the win yesterday.  He lost his train and still had enough to get the win.  Talent certainly doesn't equal class so shut up and ride.  Enjoy the ride today brother.

Did you get that new EM all wet?  Please tell me that you have a camera with you...  I would love to see some of the scenery from a riders perspective.

Be alert and aware out there

posted by salski61 on 12:32 pm

Well, the best laid plans have once again gone awry.  Headed out today with the intention of doing about 60 miles.  About 12 miles into the ride, I was making a left turn onto a side street when a guy did a roll through at the stop sign (really, stop means stop even in NJ).  I was already full into the turn, leaning in when I realized that he wasn't going to stop for me.  Best I could do was straighten up and try to match his angle to offset the impact.  I wound up on his hood with my bike in the air.Fortunately, nothing is broken on either the body or the ride.  Once I composed myself, I had a little chat with my new friend in the car who claims he didn't see me.  How you miss someone riding down the center of a lane with his arm out to signal in an iridescent yellow jersey is beyond me.  Anyway, I got back in the saddle and rode on.  About 25 miles later, the adrenaline must have worn off and my knee got a little cranky so I headed for home.  Icing it now and hoping for the best.  Please be alert out there since it is obvious others are in too much of a hurry to pay attention.

by dgaskill on Jul 6, 2011 at 2:46 pm

Holy Crap Sal..... are you and the bike okay?

by bikeninja on Jul 6, 2011 at 4:09 pm

i second that that coment...but a big SHIT!!! to it.this is one of my pet peeves about riding in america.people just dont have a clue about cyclists.to buisy texting, talking on phones...a simple salution to it all.(other then cattle prods and tazers)when you are sitting in the drivers seat, the phone doesnt work.unless you are stoped.to salve seat belt issues.cant take your car out of park unless seat belt is clicked in.its a no brainer.people are just so more aware of cyclist on this side of the pont...dont get me wrong there are accidents here also.but they seem to be for differant reasons.americans are just to distracted.FOCUS PEOPLE!!!! vini vidi vici livestrong

by NickDigi on Jul 6, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Sal Glad you were not hurt. I agree with alan you see way too many people on cell phones and not paying attention. I have two red strobe lights on the back of the bike I figure they will help to get someones attention. The worse are the dump trucks there are a lot of quarrys around my area and i swear they try to get as close to you as they can. I do try to ride 3 ft from the road side to force drivers to slow down.
I was hit once as a teenager Making a left at a light and the guy next to me also made a left and clipped my bike. Then he got out and gave me .
Be safe out there.

by salski61 on Jul 7, 2011 at 5:10 am

Thanks for the concern guys.  Being a hood ornament wasn't on my list of things to do but fortunately, no harm done to man or bike.  Glad that the ride is so light because it came right up with my right leg which probably saved the frame.  We really need to have our heads on a swivel out there.  Nick - agree with you on the rear strobe.  I have a FireFly on the back which certainly has helped with visibility from behind.  Unfortunatley, we can't control the drivers out there so its up to us to be hypervigilant.  At least the guy had the courtesy to check to see if I was OK before he took a look at his car LOL.  He was pretty shaken too so hopefully he'll be more alert going forward.

Midpoint and ahead of schedule

posted by salski61 on 6:57 am

Here we are, half way through the year and the miles are finally starting to add up.  1,870 miles at the end of June which puts me a month +100 miles ahead of where I was last year (1,776 at the end of July 2010).  Performance has leveled off due to the lack of any longer rides but I expected that.  Today is the first day of four that I have off so I'm looking to do at least three good, long outings and then two club rides on the weekend.  Work kept me off of the bike for the last four days so I'm ready to get back on and going again.  Wish me luck and throw out any advice.

by dgaskill on Jul 5, 2011 at 7:35 am

Way to go Sal on putting in more miles at this point, than last year.  If you're planning 3 consecutive long rides, my advice would be to make the 3rd ride an easy recovery pace short ride. (1hr or less)
Then look to up the intensity on the club rides :)
Can't wait to hear how you did.

by salski61 on Jul 5, 2011 at 1:41 pm

Thanks Dennis, I eased in with a 50 mile ride today.  Good pace but not really pushing too hard.  Finished with a 17.8 average and just under 1900 ft. of climbing.  Tomorrow I'll add another twenty and then take your advice on the third day.  Club rides this weekend are a pair of metrics, both over rolling terrain.  Saturday I ride to the start which will add another 20 round trip so I should have a pretty good idea on where my stamina level is going to be.  Hopefully I'll be able to crack 2K by the end of the week.  Thanks for the advice.

Is everyone here Retired? haha how did you get 2,000 miles so far this year.
thats like 47 miles per day average. I am luck to get 70-100 miles per week.
What am I doning wrong.?

by dgaskill on Jul 5, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Nick I only wish I was retired...LOL
I've put in 1900 so far this year, and I've put in lots of trainer miles through the winter.

by bikeninja on Jul 6, 2011 at 4:15 am

dont sweat it nick.its not quantity it quality.

by salski61 on Jul 6, 2011 at 5:01 am

Alan's right Nick.  Quality is what counts.  I shoot for a 10 mile per day average (total, not in the saddle) and finally hit it this year.  As long as it isn't raining, snowing or in the single digits, I'm out there.  It also helps that I get to work from home a few days a week.  Those days I either spend my lunch hour on the bike or go out early before the day starts.  Very fortunate to have that opportunity and it also allows me to spend the evenings with my family.  A few years ago, I was consumed with the numbers and was sacrificing quality of life to get there so its good to have a balance now.  Good luck with your training and don't sweat the numbers.

Stage 2

posted by dgaskill on 5:06 pm

After yesterday's 2 hr Spin Class to mimic the 1st stage of the Tour De France, today we opted to follow suit and do stage 2. A hard tempo ride over a 15 mile course that we like to ride often, and the one in which we did just last week and shaved time off our best. This route isn't flat either, as there are two good sized rollers that we have to hit twice. It was a solid workout and allowed me to help Cyndi with her paceline practise.

To honor the TDF

posted by dgaskill on 1:24 pm

What an EPIC SPIN CLASS this morning....it was packed with 22 riders!!
Today I held a special 2 hour long class to honor the starting of the Tour De' France. I made the profile mimic as closely (ok so we didn't do the 119 miles...LOL) todays stage, by spending the first 30 minutes riding on the flats.
Then we headed inland off the coast towards the hilly coastal vineyard country, and spen the next 20 minutes riding those rolling hills before hitting a short fast flat to the halfway point. (1st hour)
After a 12 minute recovery/feed zone, it was another fast paced 10 minutes on the flat lands leading up towards the very long climb that sits at the end of this stage.
It was awesome to watch everyone focus as we climbed for the next 28 minutes, before taking some downhill recovery for 4 minutes at an easy spin.
And what would a stage be, if we didn't have some attacks & sprints?
So over the last 10 minutes leading up to the finish line, we mixed it up with multiple attacks and finally some serious sprints as we crossed the line......breathless :)

Time: 1hr 55min
Dist: 26 miles
Avg Spd: 13.57 mph
Avg HR: 138 / Max HR: 172

Finals

posted by dgaskill on 10:12 pm

The final Time Trial Race was tonight, and going into it..... I was holding a small time gap over my nearest competitor for taking the Most Improved Rider. (It should be noted that this guy qualified last year for the Triathalon Nationals)
So with "Him" starting only 30 seconds mehind me, I knew I was gonna have to go pretty much Full Throttle the entire time.....pushing myself into the outer limits.
Well he caught & passed me by mile 5, but I too had caught and passed all those who started before me by the 1/2 way turn around.....shaving 10 seconds off my split.
I figured at that point, if I could just keep him within sight then it would be close when all the times were figured.
Well after 3 miles, he just kept getting further away until I no longer could see him :(
By the time I could the finsh area about 2 miles away, I dug as deep as I could.....pushing myself into that suffering zone. (That;s what the Pro-Tour Commentatorslike to call it :)
When I hit that finish line, I could harldy believe that I had shaved a HUGE 50 seconds off last weeks time of 38:42. (My competitor had come in at 35:50)

So at the post race awards & pizza grubbing, when I heard "Runner Up" for most improved was me, that's when I finally knew I couldn't of given anymore than I did and I was okay with that.
What I managed to accomplish over these 5 races was just awesome.
My very first night's time was 41:36.
Tonight;s race time was 37:52
My overall improvement was 4min 44 sec.
The time margin I lost by to the "Super Triathalon Guy" was 31 seconds.
Not to shabby, since he is also nearly 10 years younger than me :)

Time: 37:52
Dist: 13.8 miles
Avg Spd: 21.8 mph
Max Spd: 26.2 mph
Avg HR: 169
Max HR: 177

Newbie looking for training advice

posted by couttsvt on 8:43 pm

Hi! I'm new to cycling and to this group. I recently started biking to get some air, fun and exercise. I rediscovered how much I love it and have made it a regular part of my life. I'm currently biking about 13 miles a day in about 65 minutes. I registered for the Livestrong Challenge on August 20 and need to be able to bike 25 miles by then. Would anyone mind giving me suggestions for how to almost double my endurance in the next  8 weeks? I have a lot of free time on my hands and am happy to dedicate as much time as necessary to my goal.
Thank you!

Welcome to our little corner of the world.  If you're looking for some good advise, you're in the right place.  There are plenty of contributors here with tons of knowledge that will be able to get you going.  My suggestion would be to start by taking a look at the training plans provided on the My LIVESTRONG page (http://my.livestrong.org) under the Team LIVESTRONG 2011 section.  The 25 mile route offers a few moderate hills so you want to be sure that you include a few of those in your preparation.  The main thing to remember is that this isn't a race.  You should ride at a pace that is comfortable and take the time you need at the rest stop to recharge.  The less stress and pressure that you put on yourself, the more you will enjoy the day.  I hope that this helps and please let us know when the inevitable questions pop up.  Good luck!

by bikeninja on Jun 30, 2011 at 5:59 am

sal has made great points.most of all to enjy the ride, and its not a race.the philly route is my favorite challenge site (will be back there next year)how are you set on a bike?with your preperation take baby steps.dont put a lot of pressure on yourself as sal says.the 25 mile route is very doable and enjoyable.dont be afraid to do more miles then the livestrong training plan says.we put that together as a guide line more then anything.good luck..we are here to help you anyway we can.vini vidi vici livestrong

by spade2you on Jul 1, 2011 at 7:19 am

If you can ride 13 miles, you can ride 25.  Going from 25 to 50 or 50 to 100 will take more time and focus.

I'm a racer, so don't take my comments as too harsh, but why is 13 miles taking over an hour?  Are you on a fitted road bike with clipless pedals and using good cadence?

by couttsvt on Jul 2, 2011 at 8:03 pm

Thanks so much to everyone for the advice! I actually surprised myself and made it to 25 today, way ahead of "schedule". I finished my 11-mile river trail and found myself disappointed that it was over and with energy to spare, so I just kept going ... and going ... until I'd done the whole thing twice. It's pretty flat so I'll need to work on those hills pretty soon (thanks, Sal).

Ninja, thanks for reminding me to take baby steps. I'm trying to focus on just having fun and not biting off more than I can chew. I'm lucky enough that just a mile from my house I have a beautiful 130-mile paved biking trail along a river, with lots of other bikers, runners, rowers and people just enjoying summer. When I slim down to a weight I'm more comfortable with, I'll focus more on strict training, rather than enjoyable cardio.

Spade, I took a closer look at my speed sensor today and my 11-mile trail takes me about 50-55 minutes, plus a mile to and from through traffic. I have a Raleigh Circa 1.0 that's been adjusted to my frame, but no clipless pedals. Just the regular ones that came with the bike and sneakers. Thanks for the tip about cadence. Like the newbie I am, I thought a higher gear meant better exercise. I read up on it and apparently I'm wrong. I went down to 6 and 5 today and sped up a little, but still not much past 14/hr. I did hit 20 a few times but I was definitely maxed out. A short answer to your question might be that I simply haven't been trying to go any faster. I've just been taking my time biking along my beautiful river trail. I might be a bit faster without the wind coming off the water and jogger traffic, but I don't think it would make a huge difference. I figure the speeding up will come naturally, with time and weight loss. I'm not quite ready to think like a racer, but hopefully I will be soon!

Thanks again for the support, everybody! I don't know if I'd have gone for the full 25 today without it.

3 min Climbs. (mixed in & out of saddle)
1 min Recovery Easy Spin (90 rpm)
3 min Climbs. (mixed in & out of saddle)
1 min Recovery Easy Spin (90rpm)

3 min Flat Recovery Repeat the above set one more time, but with heavier resistance than before.
Then Cool-down & Stretch.

About time I start getting results.

posted by spade2you on 9:38 am

Got 7th in Cat 4, 1st in Cat 4 under 39 age group.
I had to get an early start time so I could be somewhere later in the day.  I started right after the juniors, who basically only had to race 1/2 of the distance.  I ended up catching most of them before their turnaround point, but think I should have been able to catch them all if they went full distance.  Behind me were the women, which was fine, but I'd have no idea how my competition was doing until well after I crossed the line.

With the early start, the road was pretty wet.  The bike will need a little cleaning, but it had stopped raining maybe an hour or so before the start.  I should have taken better notes, but I think I was assisted with a stronger tail wind.  There was still somewhat of a headwind on the way out.  On the way back, the sun also was coming out, which helped dry out the roads.  The course wasn't technical, other than having to turn around for the out and back course.  I lost a little time because I didn't practice my turnaround technique.  Normally I can't do that without the road being closed off for the sake of safety.  Being roughly a minute being the guy in 6th, this didn't matter in the long run.

I've been using a power meter on my time trial bike.  I'm also able to routinely ride this course and under different weather conditions, which helped me come up with the most efficient pacing strategies for most weather conditions.  The course heads out south and returns north.  I had a south wind, which is perfect because there's a descent that allows me to push it during the long headwind sections and take a break during the descent, which heads east before bending south again. Looking back, I think I could have pushed myself a little harder on the way out, but it's a long time trial and you really need to be careful about hitting things too hard on the way out.  At the turnaround point, I dialed back my efforts a little as the tail wind carried me very fast.  This allowed me to rest before drilling it on the climb.  I was then able to rest a bit before approaching a section with many rolling hills.  My strategy at this point becomes hitting the hills very hard with enough effort to carry me over the crest.  I then rest on the descents until it's time to drill the next hill.  The last few miles were lightning fast.  I wouldn't call it a sprint, but I pushed it very hard when I saw the finish line and knew how much I had left, which is why I think I wasn't quite aggressive enough throughout.

Distance:  23.4 miles
Time:  59:32
Avg speed: 23.5mph (personal best on course).  Max speed:  36.2mph
Avg cadence: 107rpm.  Max:  145rpm (I don't remember doing that)
Avg HR: 181bpm
Avg power: 183w (kind of low for me, especially for that speed).  Max:  573w

Overall, I was pleased with the effort.  Setting goal wattages for the various sections helped immensely.  My previous best was 22mph.  The power meter also allowed me to fine tune my time trial position and see where I could make gains holding the same effort.

nice job spade!

Dang I could use your TT coaching abilites...hahahaha.
My last scheduled TT is this Thursday Night, and it's looking like a TTT? Although I'm only about 8 seconds off from taking the indivual "Most Improved Rider" title.  So not sure which one I will go with yet?

by spade2you on Jul 1, 2011 at 7:22 am

Thanks guys.  I was happy to finally be on the right side of the top 10, especially after such a demoralizing year.  I'm not exactly sure when and where things went wrong, but I'll be paying better attention to my winter training seasons.  Work cut into my racing a bit, so I'll be hoping to yield better results and with more races next season.

Without a doubt, I owe a lot to time trialing with a power meter.  Not cheap, but perhaps the most improvement I've gotten out of a single piece of gear.  It cost about as much as my disc wheel, but gave me about 1.5mph improvement over last season's best.

Sunday Fun

posted by dgaskill on 6:27 pm

It was a great Fathers Day ride with Cyndi and a racing friend of ours. Had a few good climbs in it and even helped Cyndi work on her pacelining skills. (She did a great job)

Just before the 20 mile mark, Alex (the cat 3 racer) calls me out to sprint against him. OMG....what was I thinking....no sooner I said I got your wheel.... he accelerated up to 27mph....leaving Cyndi in the dust. At the 100yrd to go, I jumped around him and hit 31mph as I just started to edge in front... but he got me by 1/2 a wheel. :)

On the way back though.... I out climbed him to the top of a 1 mile climb, so I felt justified.

After a "little" incident and finally parting ways with Alex, I worked the last 10 miles solo in my Aero Bars, practicing for upcoming Time Trial.

Time: 2hr 29 min

Dist: 40.2 miles

Avg Spd: 16.1 mph

Max Spd: 43.2 mph.... decending is so much fun :)

Avg HR: 133

Max HR: 177

Oh and Alan.... 1777 miles for me. I will NEVER catch your crazy mileage totals.....LOLOLOL

by salski61 on Jun 20, 2011 at 4:30 am

Bravo Dennis.  Sounds like you're getting stronger as each week passes.  Keep up the good work.  BTW, just wondering what happened to Cyndi after you dropped her!  Hope your little incident works itself out.

by dgaskill on Jun 20, 2011 at 7:03 am

Sal....... she caught up to us after the sprint was over and I was gasping for air and my life. (LOL)  She held 21mph on her own to close the gap, and then we pulled over to refill some water bottles.
That "incident" I mentioned happened at mile 30. We were on our way back with 10 more miles to go, and we had another set of railroad tracks to cross. Must of been over these tracks 20 different times, and yet...... this time Cyndi's front wheel somehow caught just right and down she went.... HARD.  She was very shaken.....a few bleeding cuts and a little road rash, along with a few small dents in her helmet. So I called a friend to SAG her home.
She's very sore this morning and the bike apprears to be just fine.... thank you God, cause I sure wouldn't want my Wife or her  Madone Project-One cracked up.

by bikeninja on Jun 20, 2011 at 9:42 am

TT #3 done....and getting harder!!!

posted by dgaskill on 8:19 pm

WOOO WEEEE....... Time Trial Race #3 is done and phew, I'm beat.
It was clear blue skies, but...wholly cow....just once I wish the wind would stop for one evening. (It was screaming off of the bay)
I passed the guy who started 30 seconds in front of me with in the first 4 miles....and set my sights on everyone else who started before me...which meant I needed to close a total of 2:30 to pass the very first rider on course.
I caught that lead out person by the half way point, and then kept the next rider in my sights for the 2nd half.....I just couldn't seem to overtake him, although I was only about 8 secs behind. (this was the guy who started 60 secs ahead of me, as I had caught the rest and was only passed by 2 riders this time)
By the time I crossed the line, I ended up shaving off another 14 seconds.
Not sure how much I can keep shaving off????
Time: 38:34 (Last week was 38:50)
Dist: 13.9 miles
Avg Spd: 21.6 (Max Spd 26.3mph) (Last week Avg: 21.4 / Max:25.7mph)
Avg HR: 163 (Max HR 171)

And the icing on top of this cake..... I've dropped my bodyweight 5# in the past 4 weeks AND bodyfat is now 16.7%...down from 18.3% :D

Wind and hills are where the time gaps will come from.  It time trials were all tailwind and/or down hill, we'd all have to push extremely hard to get a few seconds on any rival.  Throw in hills and wind and those seconds become minutes between strong and weak riders.  The key is to put your efforts into the wind and climbs.  Hopefully there are sections where you get rest, but you don't always get that. My ideal course is where there are nice hilly or windy sections with a little break between hard sections.

First real hill ride of the year

posted by salski61 on 4:01 am

Every year before the LSC Philly, I try to get an idea of where my legs are at on the hills.  Sunday's ride was a 52 mile club ride through the Holmdel hills that gives me a pretty good measure.  Eight of us rolled out and stuck together through the rollers that made up the first third of the ride.  A few gaps started to form as we headed into the steepr hills but I was lucky enough to be in the front group and able to conserve my energy for what I knew was coming.  At mile 30, we turned onto the leg breaker of the route, a 1.6 mile hill called Takalusa that has an 18% grade for a short stretch in the middle.  Any time I tackle a hill like this, I try to stay near the front and far enough off of the next guys wheel to be able to react to any changes.  Unfortunately for the last rider in our merry band, he was too close to the rider in front of him and he touched wheels.  Here we are, about 1/3 of the way up the hill and we're stopped to tend to his road rash.  Fortunately, nothing was broken and he actually was a trooper and did the climb before heading for home.  Deciding to take no chances, I headed up to the front of the group and the legs felt great.  I was able to climb the rest of the hill solo, dropping the rest of the group at the half point.  The rest of the day was more of the same.  I'm up the hill first and waiting for the rest at the top.  Finally, fter a series of hills and descents, I got tired of waiting every time after dropping the group (the final was about a three minute wait where I thought that they must have had a mechanical - there wasn't).  I decided that since we were only a few miles from the end that I would just go.  In no time, I had about a quarter mile on the group heading for home.  I was so stoked that I was ready to just keep going.  Seeing the rest of the group gassed as they rolled in gave me a little internal smile.  It was a good day to savor.  I'm sure that there will be plenty of others where I'm the one rolling in gassed.  All in all, I think that I have a good base to work with for the Philly ride.

Oh Yeah.... Sal you are gonna have one of the best LSC Rides ever. By the sounds of it, your legs are at there peak right now.... so just look to maintain this level and be fully rested when the Philly comes.

by salski61 on Jun 15, 2011 at 3:18 am

Thanks guys - Still a lot of work to do so no gloating.  This is about half of the LSC (both distance and climbing) but at least I have an idea of where I'm at.  I'm sure that there will be days between now and August when I'm sucking wind, wondering what I need to do.

TT #2...... 3 more to go.

posted by dgaskill on 8:37 pm

t was Race Night, and although it wasn't raining.....the wind was horrible.
My goal was to shave at least 30 seconds off of last weeks Time Trial, so I made sure I payed close to attention to eating good fuel all day :)
My start time was 3 minutes back, do to finishing 7th overall last week so when I heard 3..2..1.... I stood and powered down on the pedals.
I passed caught and passed 2 riders prior to the half turn around, then was caught by the some of the faster riders after that. BUT.... I still managed to catch and pass 2 other riders and then keep bouncing around positions with two guys who Tri-Athletes. After finally dumping one of them off the back,me and the other guy locked into a battle/competition all the way to the end. With about 1/2 mile to go.... he jumped on it and pulled about 50yrds out in front, but I kept my cool and there was no way I was gonna come in behind him. So with the final 200 yrds to go, I hit overdrive and sprinted with all I had..... crossing the line about 8 inches in front of him.
Total Time = 38:50
Avg Spd = 21.7 mph / Max Spd 25.7mph
Dist = 13.9 miles
Avg HR = 171

As for shaving time off of last weeks TT.... I crushed it.... by 2:44 :D

Not sure if I can shave more off next week.... my legs were starting to quiver when I got off the bike.

by salski61 on Jun 10, 2011 at 4:19 am

Great job Dennis!  Very impressive riding and great determination.  Find that focus again next week and I'm sure you'll shave off even more time.

I don't know guys????  This is my first TT series ever, so I'm competiting in my normal riding gear with the addition of Aero-Bars on my Madone. I've managed to drop 4 lbs in the last 30 days, and last night.... I was pegged at Threshold almost the entire time.
Suggestions from any of my riding / racing buddies here are welcomed.

by bikeninja on Jun 10, 2011 at 1:20 pm

dennis you are doing fantasic.look how far you have come in the last 2 years.you have to ask yourself the whys and the whos.why are you doing this and who are you doing it for.in 2 TT you have shown improvement.you cant ask for more then that..well you could but thats getting greedy and unrealistic.there is no prize money.no one to beat but yourself(thats what the TTs are all about)just enjoy it!!!when i retiered from racing it took me a long time to be able to just go ride my bike.to get out of that training mode.then i would feal guilty(i still some times do)for not riding..i dont owe anything to anybody but me! and i like it that way.i busted my for over 20 years.now its me time!!!it may sound selfish but if i am not happy no one around me will be happy...just ask my wifeyou are doing great...i would love to have you on my team anyday, anywere, anytime.

by spade2you on Jun 12, 2011 at 2:24 pm

If you feel the need to sprint at the end of a TT, you underpaced yourself.

by dgaskill on Jun 13, 2011 at 8:14 am

Spade:  The only reason I wanted to Sprint out the last 100+ yrds was because I didn't want to finish behind the new guy :)

by spade2you on Jun 13, 2011 at 11:01 am

That's all fine and dandy, although it really doesn't matter who crosses the line first in an ITT.  If you pass your minute man and he sprints by you at the fiish, he's more than likely only gained back a second or two.  Same goes if you try to outsprint the guy who started behind you.

When you're doing an ITT the way you should be, you shouldn't be able to sprint.  When you meter your efforts throughout the course you'll save minutes where a sprint will only save seconds.

by dgaskill on Jun 13, 2011 at 7:17 pm

OOOHHHHH.......gotcha Spade Thx..  So if I'm pushing myself along at thresold, should I then either go bigger gearing (which is harder to hold pace) or push more into the red?
My next TT is this Thursday nght.

by spade2you on Jun 13, 2011 at 7:45 pm

I'd say push just a little more into the red.  Pacing yourself in an ITT is a lot like Blackjack.  The higher the better, but you don't want to cross that point where you blow up.

Part of the game is knowing the course, conditions, and yourself.  When you get a little more advanced, you can start treating courses more like an interval where you put a little more effort into climbs, crosswinds, or headwinds, and dial it back a bit when you have the opportunity to rest before the next slower section.  Putting more effort into the slower areas will basically save you time based on the same overall effort, but this takes experience and planning.

Another hot one in the NorthEast

Had to get out at 7 AM to beat the heat today and it was already 80 degrees.  Nice 20 mile ride with no drama.  Lunch time is bike bath time and ABC (Air, Brakes, Chain).  Making sure that the maintenance is taken care of.  Anybody have a strong opinion on a rear cassette?  I have a Shimano DC-5600 11T 10 speed on there now that is just about done.  Not as durable as I would have liked so I'm looking for something else.  Ultegra?  Dura-Ace?  Other?  The few extra ounces on the Ultegra won't make a difference to me.

Manayunk Wall Challenge

posted by NickDigi on 1:59 pm

Woke up at 5 am hade some pasta and then some of Dr Lims rice cakes, Coffe and drove to Philly. Got to start line about 6:45 am Ride started at 7:15.
We headed out and quickley we were going 20-24 mph up Kelly Drive, nice pace HGuy on roller blades was riding with me and drafting on my back( made me a little nervious at 19 MPH. We rolled onto Main street in Manayunk and rolled up some small hills. At the 6.5 mile mark we made the sharp right turn onto Levering Street then a quick right onto Cesson which goes under the El and is cobbles. the n a quick Left onto Levering again this is were the pain starts.you go about .25 miles and then slight left onto Lycium street which really kicks up the pitch. average 17% with some spots 20+. Its amazing the riders that are kicking your on the flat and as soon as they go 1/4 mile they are un clipping or they start to cough and grown, I swear one guy was going to loose his lunch.By the half way point my legs were screaming but I told them to shut up, (actually saw a shirt ith that on it, "shut up legs") i kept going by this time I see my son Jim and his Girlfriend on the side of the road cameras in hand ready to take pictures of the suffering. I kept going by 3/4 of the way up it started to get easier. Seeing the banner at the top was a happy sight. more carnage on top as 20 -30 people stopped to catch there breath, made the right on Manayunk ave  and down hill we go. All the was down to Kelly drive and back toward Lemon Hill. I got passed by the Colivita Womens team who were riding Kelly for a warm up and they had < em>Giorgia Bronzini with them (the world road champion). I kicked it up to keep up with them for a short while then I peeled off to start the climb into Fairmount park and the final climb up Lemon Hill. Back to the start.
14.9 mph average which I was very please with considering the Climb up the wall.

by bikeninja on Jun 5, 2011 at 2:08 pm

super fantastic nick.couldnt be prouder!!!!!hills show the true guts and grit ina ridder.ya its not so hard to fly on the flats.but to climb 17 to 20plus %ers thats the hard stuff.when we decidied to do philly for the livestrong challenges some thought we were nuts because it was so difacult(its the livestrong challenge route....by far)lance told the naa sayers.its called a challenge for a reason.that saying shut up legs is one of my favorite.jens voit is known for saying that.one of the best riders out there.i am planning to do the philly livestrong challenge next year.i love it..my favorite by far.love them hills.

by salski61 on Jun 6, 2011 at 4:13 am

Way to go Nick!  Sounds like all your hard work really paid off.  It had to be very gratifying to be cranking up the wall hearing the clicking as others gave up.  Not to take anything away from the other riders since I know what a test that wall can be.  Some are built for speed on the flats and some are climbers.  I'll take the hills any day.  Its also great to hear that your son was there to support you.  It must make you very proud.  Keep riding like this and we'll all be watching you ride off in Philly (with the exception of Alan who I remember riding up, down and back up the hills at the Challenge a few years ago ).

by dgaskill on Jun 6, 2011 at 8:20 am

Whoa..... thats a serious ride Nick.  Way to go!!!!

by NickDigi on Jun 6, 2011 at 2:55 pm

Sal there is no way I could match alan now that you mention it I did see him going back down the hill and remember saying who is this guy. Believe me Philly is no picnic especially after going 60 miles and then hitting the hardest climb up to Landis Store. Manayunk is hard but you only have to do it once in 14 miles. Philly is a much harder day and after 4 years and two cracks at the 100 mile I still havnt made it all the way. Two years ago I ran out of time with 20 miles to go after doing all the hard parts. and last year they diverted the field because of Lightning and heavy rain at the 70/100 mile turn off. 2011is the year come rain or shine or time limits I am going for it. I don;t care if they stop me and want my bib number!

by salski61 on Jun 7, 2011 at 4:02 am

2011 will be your year Nick.  This is my 6th go around and each year gets a little less difficult (note I didn't say easier ).  I did the 70 mile route the first two years, 100 the next two.  Last year they closed the 100 mile just as I was coming up to the turn.  I begged and pleaded with them to let me go out with the riders I could still see about 100 feet up the road but it was a no-go.  Not too happy for the next few miles but when I heard the stories from the 100 mile riders that did make the cut, I was glad that LS put my health and welfare ahead of my ego.  Landis hill is definitely a challenge but I always had more trouble with the hill on Woodside / Sally Ann Furnace around mile 40 after the cutoff for the 70 mile course.  It probably has to do more with psyche than reality.  Or maybe its the number of riders that clip out on the way up that first set of hills that throws me off.  Either way, thats where I focus more than any other spot on the course.  Keep training the way you are now and hitting that 100 mile will be no problem.  I know we'll see you coming across the line with a big smile in a few weeks.

by bikeninja on Jun 7, 2011 at 3:54 pm

it would be fantabulas to ride with you guys.we would support eachother,no drop.we stick together.it would be an honor and a plesure.i think at our age(i do believe we are all at the same age..give or take a year or so)its all about the ride.i have no need for speed anymore...16 to 20 mph is good enough.nothing to proove to anyone.like my wife says "better to be a has been then a never will be"she is one of my biggest fans.as of now lets plan for it.2012 in philly...be there!!!!

First TT Race in the books

posted by dgaskill on 8:45 pm

Did my first Time Trial event tonight, and no.. the weather didn't behave at all. By the time we all got in our warm-ups and were standing around getting out starting times.....the rain dumped on us and we all laughed and sniveled, and then joked about kicking the organizers butt!!
I was 5th out on the course, the winds were coming out of the SW at 15-20 and the rains finally stopped about 10 minutes into it.
About 2 miles before the half way point, I passed the rider that started 1 min ahead of me.....3 miles later I was passing the guy who had started 2 minutes ahead. I had solid pace going on and had gotten use to riding in the Aerobars I borrowed.
With 3 miles to the finish line I caught and passed the guy who started 30 sec ahead of me.....and he is a very very VERY strong rider :)
The finish line came into sight, so I began my sprint with what I had left in my legs.
Dist: 13.9 miles
Time: 41:36
Avg Spd: 20 mph
Max Spd: 24.3 mph
Avg HR: 166
Max HR: 177

Already looking forward to next weeks TT.

by dgaskill on Jun 3, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Thanks guys..... I do need to mention that I too was passed by some of the stronger riders who started after me as well.  But I didn't care :)
I have 4 of these this month (every thursday night), and my next goal will be to shave 1 min off time.

Sad news

posted by flyingscotsman on 3:39 am

If you haven't already heard the Movistar rider Xavier Tondo died yesterday .
The Movistar cyclist was reportedly crushed between his car and his automatic garage door as he was heading out for a training ride with team-mate Beñat Inxtausti, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.
Movistar team manager Eusebio Unzue has confirmed the news of the 32-year-old's death, which took place at 10am on Monday.
"The 32-year-old Catalan rider was in his car on the way to training when he suffered the incident with the door of the garage," the team said in a statement.
Tondo, who was based at home in Granada at the time of his death, won this year's Vuelta a Castilla y Leon and is a former stage winner in both the Volta a Catalunya and the Paris- Nice, and was sixth overall in the 2010 Vuelta a España.
Earlier this year, he blew the whistle on a doping ring when he alerted authorities after receiving emails in which he was offered banned substances.
It has not  been a lucky month in the pro cycling world.
R.I.P. Xavier and lest we not forget Wouter Weylandt.   :-(

by bikeninja on May 24, 2011 at 8:13 am

it is very sad.i remember hearing about the drug ring thing.that takes guts good for him.his memory will livestrong in those who loved him.livestrong

by spade2you on May 24, 2011 at 12:27 pm

Tondo had a very promising future and did well last year on Cervelo, with Movistar being his first UCI team.  Very tragic loss since he was well known for riding clean as well as being a really nice guy.

Back in the saddle

posted by salski61 on 11:58 am

After 8 days off, I got the chance to jump back on the bike today.  I needed something to help get over the jet lag and this was just the ticket.  Only did twenty easy miles but its enough to get the itch started again.  Going to double that tomorrow and then shoot for 100 next week.  Glad to have the weather cooperate and looking forward to the start of my LIVESTRONG Challenge training.  Watch out Philly!

by dgaskill on May 26, 2011 at 2:46 pm

Lactate Threshold / V02 Max Training......what happened?

posted by dgaskill on 3:38 pm

Had a great training ride with two of my hardcore cycling buddies. What I had wanted was to work on Time Trial/Tempo stuff.....but after a few miles of warming up, that plan quickly fell apart. (seems John knew my weakness better than I did) We settled into a a tight paceline and the miles flew by as we held 22-25mph. John (the strong...est rider of our group) tells us during a little recovery, that we'll do one acceleration pull.....with the speed starting at 25mph and as you pull through to the front, you try an go even faster. I cry inside myself, because as if holding the blistering pace we just did over the 8 miles wasn't fast enough, now I need to push harder?........mama :(
We'll I sucked it up and when it was my pull, I accelerated up until I hit 27mph and then ran out of gas.
After a very steep 1/2 mile climb, we took a short break and headed back. At least we were gonna hold the pace down to 20mph, as the winds were starting to pick up.
At last I could see the end of this torture coming to an end in a few more miles, so I figured I would do something crazy...(just because, although I should of waited until the finish line was in sight) and waited on John's wheel till I felt like the wind wasn't blowing against us, then launched a sprint around him and tried to pull
away. (Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids) I managed to hit 28.5mph and tried to settle down, when I noticed that my two buddies were closing the gap and would very quickly catch me. So as they started to pass, I jumped back into line and finshed as strong as I could.
Time: 1hr 20 min
Dist: 25.5 miles
Avg Spd: 19.2 mph
Max Spd: 45.7mph (coming back down that little 1/2mile climb :)
Avg HR: 153 / Max HR: 180

posted by dgaskill on 10:30 am

Great, intense and small (only 9) Spin Class this morning. After a brief 5 min warm-up, it was all about doing a series of short, fast rolling hills with a 30 sec HARD push over the top. Then a small recovery..... an insane 6 min song with 10-15 sec Sprints tossed in every minute. One final recovery and then repeat the rolling hill series and finsh with another crazy set of Sprints. :)
Distance: 13 mi
Duration: 50:00
Speed: 15.6mi / hr

After class, I spent another 30 minutes doing:
Incline Bench Press x 4 (20,10,10,8)
T-Bar Back Rows x4 (15,10,10,10)
Push-Up to Pull Cycle x1 (10)

Then Foam Roller work on my legs. (Its called myofacial-release....big word for...it's gonna hurt like when you hit those ouchy spots! ) LOLOL
