Week Two of my training for St. George Marathon- 44 weeks away

posted by stuartdreeves on 10:57 am

Last week I started training for the St. George Marathon in October 2012.  I am giving myself a full year to train so that I am more than able to finish, that is my ultimate goal, I am not trying to break any records except my own.  I have been running for about 6 weeks now and have fully fallen in love with it.  The entire training has made me switch gears from my bodybuilding background to a different diet, different workouts and different training.  I am going to be regularly posting to this blog as a avenue of release and to hopefully gain some encouragment to keep me on track.  Throughout my training I am also going to need to drop some weight.  Like I mentioned I have a bodybuilding background and I am currently sitting at a very bulky 255 pounds and it has proven to be a tough part of the running, by huffing that extra weight around.   I am committed to improving myself, my life, and my overall health during this process.
Some about me: 41 years old, married 22 years, 3 beautiful daughters 9, 13. and 20.  I am in slightly below average condition.
My workout for this week have been Monday- 30 minutes running (2.5 miles), Tuesday- 30 minutes running (2.3 miles), Wednesday- Off, Thursday/Thanksgiving- 1:25 minutes running (5.6 miles), Friday- Off, Saturday- 42 minutes (3.1 miles), Sunday- Off

Basically ran about a mile for warmup at a decent pace.  Think it was an 8 minute mile.  Then lifted weights pretty hardcore for 50 minutes, in a circuit training style with less breaks, exercising all parts of the chest and triceps.

Wednesday Workout Posting

posted by cnaivar on 7:39 am

OK guys, the women are still posting, where is everyone?

Karate last night turned out to be brutal. We set a record high of 107F. It was still 100F even at 10PM when I got home. And the workout itself was brutal too. 4 minutes jump rope for warmup, 10 minutes stretching. Then what they called pyramids. 30 situps, switch quickly to 30 pushups, then 25 situps, 25 pushups, 20/20, 15/15, 10/10, 5/5. Then 50 mins of kata and karate forms/combination drills. Finished the class with leg lifts (alternating 6" holds, 45 deg holds, 90deg, and 90 deg side touches), forward and sideways planks, finishing with medicine ball drills. Could barely move after class was over.

This morning finished the standard 30 min moderate upper body, 45 min cardio, 15 min stretching.

Monday and Tuesday workouts

posted by cnaivar on 12:26 pm

Monday was my typical morning workout with 30/45/15, weights/cardio/stretching totalling 90 minutes. Monday evening I helped the instructors for a kid's karate class for an hour and then had a 90 minute karate workout following. 20 minutes warmup/calisthenics/rope work, 25 kata and forms, 45 minutes sparring.
Tuesday again did my morning workout and again karate tonight to prepare for my green belt test in 3 weeks. The only difference, is Monday's karate was located in air conditioning and tonight's is in a gym with no air conditioning and an expected high today of 104F.

Sang, standing in the choir at church for two services for a total of 60 minutes. This doesn't count anymore as someone so aptly pointed out. I mark myself as leading a sedentary lifestyle and then keep track of activities, of which this is an activity. After the second service it was off to the gym for indoor skiing? I was on an elliptical machine that also had hand levers with it so I could get a full body workout. I can't find this activity on Livestrong's list of exercises. I did that for 62 minutes and, after a nap, I got up and finished the tree trimming I started yesterday for 45 minutes.

What Happened to Everyday Activities?

posted by bri_boy24 on 8:14 pm

Aside from your traditional exercise activites, to know how many calories I've burned v.s. how many calories I should intake per day, standard activities (driving, office work, conf calls, etc...) are necessary for accurate tracking.  Perhaps some relied solely on those activities, however; I generally work out 5 days a week and the additional tracking was a tool to help me meet my goals.  As it stands now, removing those daily life activties from the database has rendered the MyPlate tool useless.

 Spinning....

by cnaivar on Aug 3, 2011 at 9:24 am

I start by stating that I am not a doctor or liscenced in any therapy, but Many, Many, Many moons ago.... before a major knee injury, I was a competitive runner. I used to treat my shin splints with ice. I would fill a plastic or styrofoam cup with water and freeze it, then peel the top to expose some of the ice. Using the still covered bottom as an insulated handle run the ice over your shins. It was rather cold, but once you get used to it, was oh, so relieving. Coupled with some ibuprophen, it usually did the trick for me. Of course there is the underlying reason that you got them. Make sure you are not overdoing it and that your activities are using good forms and proper footwear. Otherwise, I myself due to the previous injury, had to chose a lower impact form of cardio and have not developed them, even with a lot of exercise almost every day for the past year. Hope it helps, I remember how bad they used to get.

I used to get shin splints everytime I jogged, didn't matter if it was 2 miles or longer.  3 months ago I picked up  Danny Dreyer's "Chi Running" book and started to learn how to run differently.  3 months later and not a single case of shin splints.  Added bonus, I've been able to get past my 3 mile limit and am reaching 9 miles on a jog.

Should I track next week?

posted by gig_coleman on 7:51 am

Next week, I'm going to karate camp with my wife and daughter. The camp is structured as having three karate workouts per day. Plus, I usually run a few miles in the morning, go to the weight room in the afternoon, and sometimes have a sixth workout of either circuit training or yoga with a guy who makes yoga workouts tougher than you'd ever think possible--easily the hardest workouts during camp.
So, I don't think I have much of a shot of consuming close to the number of calories that I burn. Not having a computer with me makes tracking calories a bit of a pain, but I did it a few weeks ago. The main reasons to track are to keep my positive momentum, and to EARN MORE BADGES. Thoughts?

Two days' worth

posted by sanford16 on 8:40 pm

The stair master was my 2nd choice for a workout on Thursday, because there was no room in the spinning workout class. I did 60 minutes on the stair master. Today, Saturday, I rode my bike to a Royal Rangers event, pinewood derby, and met our boys' group there. My cyclometer tells me that I spent 2 hours and 48 minutes moving for a total distance of 30 miles. With stop lights, etc., I spent 3 hours on the road.

Had 90 minutes of kartate last night. 103deg in the Texas heat in an non- air conditioned gym, and even with drinking almost 2 - 2 liter bottles of water, lost 3-4 lbs water weight. Could barely stand near the end.

Was extremely sore this morning, but knew I had to get up for the gym. Switched today from the local Y to a Gold's Gym that I used to work out at. Was great being back at a place where there was some serious exercising and a better variety of equipment. 30 mins moderate legs and core, 45 min cardio, 15 mins stretching.

Tuesday Workout

posted by cnaivar on 8:07 am

Disappointing workout this morning. Was halfway through my weight workout at the YMCA and someone showed up with 12 teenagers. Now I have nothing against kids and devote most of my free time to helping kids. But soon every machine in the building was in use. After my 30 minute weight workout and waiting 15 minutes for any cardio machine I could possibly use with damaged cartilage in one knee, I ended up leaving at 5:45 since my work schedule depends on me leaving the gym no later than 6:30. Finished my stretching at home.

I have my weekly karate session tonight so I will definitely get in my cardio, so the day will hopefully turn out much better at the end. Sorry to rant, just that since I started working out again last September, and seeing the results of loosing 109 lbs, my morning workouts set the mood for my entire day. Best of luck to everyone in their workouts, Let's get to posting!

A challenging day of exercise

posted by sanford16 on 6:28 pm

At work, during lunch and temperature of 79 degrees, a coworker and I ran for 18 minutes. After work, at the gym, I took an hour long spinning class. The instructor assured us that we burned 1000 calories and I believe her, but I used Livestrong's computation for spinning of less than half of that. Still, I have consumed less calories than expended.

Delinquent account of Tuesday's (back-to-work after 3 glorious days off) exercise.

posted by sanford16 on 5:36 am

I went to the gym after work and participated in two back-to-back, 60 minute classes. One was core, using a balance board and some weights, and the next was called body pump, which used more weights. Livestrong has a category of "working out at the gym" for a burn of 494 kcal/hr. I figured 105 minutes of hard work (15 minutes of prep and then take-down, etc.). Because I am competitive, as are most of us, the classes help me to exercise at a higher rate than if I was trying to do the same by myself.

How do I track push ups and pull ups?

posted by BarrySeward on 11:36 am

Yesterday I did push ups, pull ups and walking but I am not sure how to track push ups and pull ups. Does anyone have any ideas on how the best  and most accurate way to track that would be? I logged in 30 minutes yesterday. Today I ran a loop for 50 minutes.

by gig_coleman on Jul 4, 2011 at 3:26 pm

I've tried to figure out how to track core work and strength training, but the answer I've gotten is don't bother because you don't really burn that many calories doing those things. I'm not sure I completely agree with that, but it's the approach I've been taking. I think if you're doing it nonstop, though, with minimal rests, maybe you could justify it as circuit training.

by bri_boy24 on Jul 4, 2011 at 10:07 pm

You can track "push ups" by typing "push-ups" and sit-ups and other core strength training under "calisthentics" or "health club exerices - general."
And for the record, not sure who advised that you really don't burn many calories doing those exercises, but like anything else done with high intensity and short rest intervals, calories burned can add up.
It's a mistake to disregard those exercises as calorie burning.
