The official LIVESTRONG group for conversations about Gluten Free - Celiac Diet
Hi All! I was diagnosed Celiac Sprue in March of 2010-I was already on Livestrong at the time with a goal to lose 40 pounds at the time. I was struggling to loose weight for so long and once I was diagnosed it all finally made sense as to why I was always so sick and why loosing weight-no matter how little I ate and how much I exercised-was a huge challenge. Being forced to go gluten free was a major hurdle, but I found it easier as the months went on. I started on LS at 175+ pounds in Jan of 2010....with a goal to get to 140. My change in diet forced me to go raw in what I ate since my allergy by then was so strong that I would have Anaphylaxis reactions (epi-pen always at hand) to eating anything with even minor cross contaminations. Talk about scary-eating anything I did not make with my own hands was scary. I have not been able to really eat out at restaurants since my diagnosis and had to learn to come prepared with my own food to parties. BORING. Anyhow, the weight came off after about 6 months-got down to around 155/size six and felt great. Well, I have started to put back on weight.....probably since I have begun to bake and cook daily and so I know my calorie intake is getting high......doesn't help that I am baking pies and breads, cooking meals laden in pasta, sauces and cheese........but can you blame me? I was stuck eating totally raw foods for months and so missed a wonderful casserole or eating pizza! In addition to learning new ways to cook, I started a new career which takes away from time available to exercise and I have picked back up smoking-a habit I hate and feel I have to once and for all get over! So, I am finding that I need to get back on the boards and find support from other with the same challenges as me. I am 44 years old and my weight is at 167 today. Is anyone in the group in the same boat as me?
I'm definitely not in the same boat as you, but it's really difficult to find moderation after going gluten free. The intense feeling of not being sick all the time mixed with weight loss and added energy contrasts being glutened greatly.
Grains have opiod content in them that makes them addictive and we crave them for this reason. A good book on the subject is Dangerous Grains, if you can pick that up.
I eat high raw quite often and even raw foodists I've met say that they have to have soup, tea, tacos, and other cooked/warm things often to keep them from binging on foods that aren't as healthy for them. Perhaps you can try to be more moderate in your eating habits and eat smaller portions more often?
