Best jogging stroller for 40+ lbs.

posted by readyfreddie1 on 1:16 pm

I am chomping at the bit to purchase a jogging stroller! However, it is quite an investment. Does anyone have suggestions? I am an intermediate runner now and max out at around 20 miles a week. The biggest debate I have is swivel vs. locked front wheel.

Running and learning to eat like a runner!

posted by Mindi1974 on 3:13 pm

Hi everyone!  I have been logging on here for a little while now and didn't know there was all these other things I could do here.  Fun!  I love to run.  I always have but getting heavier and having small kids kept me back.  My kids are getting older now and I finally have some time for me!  I really started running about 3 months ago and am hanging in at 5 miles 3 days a week and then one longer run (my farthest to date is 8 miles) and somtimes a 3 mile short run with one of my kids.  I have added some speedwork to the end of most of them.  Mostly I am just having fun.  I am excited to run a marathon... that is my goal outside of just running!  I haven't lost much weight and I realized I wasn't eating enough calories (thanks to livestrong) to lose.  I also was eating too many empty not helpful calories and too much fat.  My goal now is to learn to eat like a runner for the fuel I need!  It stopped being about losing weight for me and more just toning and having fun with this!  Although I would probably run better if I lost some more weight :)  I am anxious to read other people's posts and find some information that maybe I haven't learned!

Buckling down.

posted by lgialanella on 6:44 am

Hello all. Apparently I signed up for Livestrong a few years ago and never did anything with it. Well yesterday I decided to buckle down and get ready for my first half marathon in Vegas for the Rock n' Roll series. I couldn't be more excited for the race and felt that I needed to really get down to business with my food and workouts.
My new found love for running started a little over a year ago, and now hate missing more than a couple of days in my Nikes!

Love to Run!

posted by makwa354 on 11:57 am

I started running again last fall. Then winter hit and it was off and on again as I live in Michigan and I hate running inside.
Well, I joined a running course that went for 10 weeks before a 5k that my employer sponsors. I ran it in just over 35 minutes!
Well, I kept running 2 to 3 times a week after the 5k. My free run distance is 1.87 miles, simply because the people that engineered the streets didn't round up ;). I ran that route today and shaved a full minute off my mile! I feel like a rock star! I am at a 11.45 pace today, working at sub 10's.

First half marathon completed today.

posted by b2jrock on 10:06 am

Very rainy and windy today. It's clear I'm a bit green at the half marathon distance.. I went out way too fast, first 2 miles were 6:05/6:07.  The race start was combined with a 10k, so it was hard to tell my relative position. My shoes filled with water not too far in the race, so I squished the whole way. My feet are still a bit waterlogged. Despite all that I think I was pretty solid for my first race at that distance, turning in a 1:31:00 gun time.  I also  learned a few lessons that will help me in my next race:  full marathon, 35 days away.

Return to running

posted by elizabethjoldha on 5:23 am

Hi ! New to the group. Coming back to running after a 2 year injury induced hiatus. Now that I am older (53) I am struggling to get that old energy level back.  I guess I expect myself to get baqck out and immediatly do 3 miles effortlessly. Then I get discouraged that it is such a challenge.  Anybody else experience this?

by maggiee on Dec 13, 2010 at 10:55 am

Oh boy have I. I am 57,  April 2009 while running a 1/2 marathon my foot broke resulting in plate and screws. I ran the Goofy Challenge in Jan. and felt good. But this past July while running, I tore a hamstring. I tried to run the Chicago Marathon 10/10/10, but just wasnt in shape. I have been having a hard time getting my head wrapped around running again, and have had a hard time getting my self out running,  even though I want to do 2 marathons 2011. I saw my doctor last week. He encouraged me and told me I would live to run another marathon, but I am just not in my 20's any longer. It just takes longer to heal and get back in shape. He told me my hamstring may take a year to heal. I felt a lot better. I ran 6 miles Saturday, I just took my time and walked when I needed to.

So just take your time getting back in shape, set some attainable goals and get out there and do it. Dont get discouraged.  If you need to, take some vitamin B to help with your energy level. (my doctor suggested that).

by rick_guitarist on Feb 3, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Im right there with ya!!! I was out of it for the past five months and gained a bunch of weight, now I am struggling to get back up to where I was this past spring and summer. I was disappointed in myself for letting myself go. Take it slow and steady, walk when you need to and don't push too hard. You will get to where you want to be, and don't be discouraged its a long slow process. Enjoy the time your putting into it even if it isn't what you were doing before, you are still working up to it, but mostly, Have fun doing it!!! Good Luck!!!

Want to get back into running

posted by SweetIvy on 7:41 am

Hi everyone!  I'm really hoping to start to get back into running.  Earlier in 2010, I decided to start training for 15k.  I was doing very well and was able to run a 1/2 marathon which was more than I had ever done in my lifetime.  I was proud and feeling healthy (as I'm overweight).  Then my knees started to hurt.  A physician told me that I would/should never run the rest of my life.  I was 25 years old at the time.  I cried for two days.  I decided to go to an Orthopedist.  I found out that my patellas we misaligned which was causing the pain.  The doc gave me knee braces with J-buttresses and told me to take it easy but since I was so young I really could get back into running, just rest when I felt pain.  Well these knee braces start at mid thigh and end at mid calf.  Needless to say, extremely uncomfortable and they tend to have a "spring" action so when I run I feel like I have a rubberband on my leg.  Ever since I've had trouble getting back into running... Now I want to start again but I do have a few obstacles.  I signed up at my Employer's fitness center, but then found out afterwards that the treadmills have a 20 min limit, which I could deal with to start, but once I got back to miles I was previously at, it's not going to cut it.  So now I realize I should run outside.  I live in Upstate New York and it's December.  So anyone have any suggestions.  If I do run outside, does anyone have ideas on how to prevent slips from ice and snow?  Or should I work on just getting back into shape first and try to pick back up in the spring time?

New to Running

posted by Irocks on 2:48 pm

ts always been a goal of mine to run the London marathon... At school I did everything I could to avoid running, first of all it took alot of effort and I didnt like the taste of iron I got in my mouth after once around the track. Second I developed way early and had big boobs at school. Back then no one one thought of getting me a sports bra and the boys thoroughly enjoyed watching me run. So I stopped. Regrets? Yes that was mine. I was awkward teenager and felt ridiculed not complemented by the attention I got. So I learn t to hide it and avoid track. I played team sports, Netball, Hockey and Soccer.

Today I'm far more in love with my body, It could be in better shape but I like my basic form.

So yes Im in training. I have been running with a friend most mornings for the past 2 months. We meet at 6.30 am and walk/run for about 1/2hour. I love it, I really do. I love getting up early. I love how I feel afterward s and I love feeling my body adapting and pushing my physical boundaries.

I have  training schedule and im blogging about running.
Yesterday my calf seized up so I was debating if I should run today.. Today was a rest day but I get scared im lazy and I push
Well I pushed myself! I went on the run this morning. I did a little stretching and although my calf felt better I was still wondering how it would fair this morning. A big part of me did not want to go this morning but I always put that down to my inherent lazy nature, or procrastination which I'm so skilled at.
the first 3 minutes were fine, I breathed well and didnt feel too bad, the second 3 minutes where a little harder but I managed and then the third 3 minutes my wall, I was dying, I had gotten to that point were I pushing myself so hard, I could see I needed to go just a little further my body was screaming out stop I cant please stop, then it happened, I cried out in pain, something in my left calf muscle snapped like someone letting go of a rubber band. I heard the snap and the pain seared through my calf.. I was so mad.. I told the others to keep going, while I rubbed my leg and hope this would just go away.. I hated not running with them, as they passed me on their final leg. Something inside me told me to not do this, to rest but thinking I was being lazy I ignored it.

I'm worried now I have done some thing that could take weeks to heal, I've been reading articles about calf muscle tears and if that's the case if there is any tear even a tiny one I'm out of the game for up to 3 weeks.. all the work I have done!!! To have to stop running for that long is terrible blow. Ill have to start all over maybe.
I'm going to speak to the personal trainer at work today and get his opinion. Hopefully it just seized and needs a couple of days with some gentle stretching and ill be back running.

I spoke to the personal trainers one looked horrified that im running as im heavy and told me to stop. The other said if i love it carry on but to decrease the walking time instead of increase my running time. I feel devastated. i love doing this but being told im to heavy to run has delt me blow and im fighting to get my esteem and positivity back.

by realdill01 on Oct 15, 2010 at 6:29 am

First off I hope the calf is feeling better. There is no magical weight to be at which you can or can't run so don't listen to those who say you can't or shouldn't. Keep up your persistance. Make sure to switch icing and heating your calf. And gradually get back into running the distance you were running. Don't think of it as a wall, but a hurdle you will be able to clear. I deal with calf problems on almost every run. Most of them are now psychological, as I think about them way too much and that is when they occur. When running, don't focus on your cramps or pains. Focus on the run and what lies ahead. Be sure to stretch well before the run, but not over stretch. The same with after the run. The next time you have a rest day, take it as a rest day. Your muscles have to heal, if you over work them you will get strains.
Keep up the good work on running, and don't let anyone bring you down. It sounds like you have a great group to run with. Use them for motivation.

by Irocks on Oct 25, 2010 at 8:21 pm

THanks for the encouragement. My calf is getting better but I havent been able to run for 3 weeks and I feel im back at the begining, Im going to start again and make stretching a BIG part of my routine. How long have you been running? when fdid you start? how far do you run?

by realdill01 on Nov 2, 2010 at 9:18 am

That is good that your calf is getting better. Don't get discouraged by having to start back at the beginning. Many people will get the set back and stop all together. Stick with it and you will pull through.

I've been running off and on for about 20 years. I played soccer in high school and joined cross country to stay in shape. Then I played in college as well. I had knee surgery in 2001, then kinda fell off the running wagon. Jumped on and off for a few years then got back on strong for the past two years. The length of my runs depend on what training I am doing. I'm currently training for a marathon on January so my running program is consistent with Hal Higdon's schedule (I'm currently on week 6). In between races I normally do 3-4 miles on Monday, Wed and Thursday with a 6-8 mile run on Saturday.

Half-Marathon Training

posted by serowynn on 2:33 pm

Hello! I'm new to LS.com and new to this group. I've been a "leisure" runner for quite a few years but I'm currently training for my first half-marathon which will take place in November. I've got a reasonable time goal in mind since it's my first "competitive" run and I'm training from a 12 week schedule I found on a running website but I would really appreciate any advice from all you avid runners out there. I'd love to hear any personal experiences or thoughts from y'all regarding the training process cause I'm really kind of flying at this thing blind!
Thanks!

by realdill01 on Oct 8, 2010 at 8:39 am

Since it will be your first 13.1, don't worry about a time goal. Worry about being able to get passed any hurdles and finish. I had a time goal when I ran my first and missed the goal by 23 minutes. I was more upset at myself for missing my goal, than realizing the accomplishment I just made. Stick to your training and be sure to keep yourself well hydrated and stretched.

Hey there I'm interested in you 12 week schedule I found a 10 week one for beginners but im looking for others too

by clbellah on Nov 1, 2010 at 2:22 pm

I'm new to this site, too, and just joined this group today, so my reply is a little late.  Even so, I wanted to congratulate you on your decision to run a half marathon - it's no small feat!  Also wanted to wish you luck!  I completed my first half marathon on October 3rd and just ran my second one on Halloween.  Both were really wonderful experiences, and I'm sure I'll do more in the future.  Aside from two other 10K races I did a few months back, I hadn't done any racing in over 25 years (since I was a kid).  It's gotten a little addicting. :)
Some advice...
My experiences probably wouldn't have been nearly as fun if I hadn't stuck faithly by my training plan.  I really think that was key.  I used the SmartCoach tool on the Runner's World website.  It gave me a customized training plan that was easy to follow.
Also, my initial goal was to merely finish and not feel like I'd been hit by a Mack truck.  Having that goal, vs. a time goal, really allowed the accomplishment to sink in without any level of disaapointment.
It sounds like you've already chosen a race, but if not, I'd recommend chosing an easy (flat!) course that is realtively close to home so you don't have any extra worries related to travel.
One piece of advice that another runner gave me was to fuel on the run.  I hadn't really considered that I would need gel or something like that during my long runs, but when I finally did try fueling on the runs, it made a HUGE difference.  (I personally like the Hammer brand gels and bars.)
The last piece of advice I would offer is to be confident and trust that all the training you've done will pay off!  I got really nervous in the days leading up to my first HM (the tapering didn't help since I had lots of excess energy!).  But trying keeping the perspective that I was prepared really helped!
Best of luck to you!

trying to get some food ideas.  what do you guys eat before and after a run?

by Britt_Fit on Jul 25, 2010 at 9:57 pm

I'm going to college for nutrition and they say the most important thing to eat before working out (especially running) is carbohydrates. They fuel your muscles. A little bit of protein is a good idea too. Fat takes longest to digest, so it's usually not a good idea to eat much of it before a run. You want to try not to have too much fiber before either (like in fruits or vegetables) because it can be uncomfortable when running. Something like a whole grain granola bar and a glass of milk or whole grain toast with peanut butter is always a good option and I think it's tasty.

by wfbeck on Jul 26, 2010 at 4:55 am

If it is a few hours before a run I have oatmeal (I typically run in the am).  If I am waking up and heading out the door than I opt for a powerbar and water since it isn't hard on my stomach.

by thomasxc on Aug 6, 2010 at 9:50 am

Don't eat anything too heavy on your stomach. Toast or a handful of cereal is pretty good. I eat a handful of Cheerios.
After I run, I load up on Gatorade and whatever I feel like eating.

by KStaines227 on Aug 10, 2010 at 12:35 pm

I have toast with peanut butter.

by trombone on Aug 11, 2010 at 4:52 am

Donwon, I run in the morning, so the bigger question for me is "what did I eat last night?"  I've read studies that say one of the best drinks after a run is a glass of low-fat chocolate milk.
I recommend oatmeal with fruit and shaved almonds after a run.  One Runner's World article said that it is the perfect post-run meal....works for me.
BTW, congratulations on your awesome start into running.

by p6584c on Sep 10, 2010 at 2:45 pm

I think easily digestable foods before a race is key. About a hour before I run I might eat a small bananna or a container of Activia Vanilla Light with a handful of Organic Flax Plus Granola, maybe some fat free milk and always plenty of water. Post-run I have a clif bar and muscle milk or gatorade and more water. Happy Running

by maggiee on May 7, 2010 at 7:26 am

I have been running for years, and I have found that training for marathons, you are better off going by a schedule starting around 16 weeks out. (that way you can prevent injury and be prepared). I have used Hal Higdon but Galloway is also good. there are a lot of good training schedules out there. I am running a marathon in October also, so I will start my training in June, right now I am jogging and biking.

by Britt_Fit on Jul 25, 2010 at 10:01 pm

I'm training for my first marathon too! I've heard that it's a good idea to have a tempo run where you do some hill or speed work as well as a long run during the week. My doctor actually has run a marathon and she recommended the 16 week running plan that I'm on now. It's great because I run only about 3 days a week. Here's the link to it. It's a beginners training plan for first timers like us :)

I run on my treadmill in the winter but recently went on a vacation to Chicago for a week and had to run outside. It was fine except for New Year's Day I went to Lincoln Park for a 5 k and it was only 10 degrees. I also pushed myself to go pretty fast for the last mile so was taking nice deep breaths resulting in a sore throat for the next two days.
I think there is a limit to how low the temperature gets and my willingness to run outside!

Planning on running tommorow early.Sorry to hear about the ribs, just give them time to heal,I know it"s tough because your always active, but rest is the best medicine.I was a boxer back in the late 80"s to early 90"s,did it for 7 years competitively, and bruised and cracked ribs was always an issue, and the only thing we could do was rest and wait for them to heal.Dont worry because the good news is they heal stronger!Take care.JS
