Hey yall!!! I just joined livestrong and I love the idea of it. Im hoping I can stay motivated enough to stay with it and get fit. I walk 2 miles a day minimum just to exercise my dog. I want to do more and I want to get into shape and be health for once!
Hi Hiker. Welcome. Walking with your dog is a great idea! Got to love an exercise buddy that doesn't complain, but I'm betting is actually excited to go for your walks. Dogs and the outdoors go together like ... oops, I was about to use a food analogy... like white water and rafting. :-)
Hi Hiker12, Welcome to our little group of posters. Good luck with your goal. It has been so much fun and challenging for me to rack up the miles, but let me tell you, there is a real sense of self-satisfaction each day I do it. Today, I was ready to call it quits after 80 minutes on the treadmill and get ready for work. Since I started earlier then usual today, I stayed on the treadmill for another 20 minutes. I feel so good!
Well today was my off day but I did manage to ride another 6 miles yesterday using a fairly strong resistance on the stationary (was only traveling at about 9.mph). I built up to the strong resistance increasing up to it in 5 minute intervals then I went down one level for another 5 minutes then I finished on what I would call a normal resistance or the equivalent to riding on a flat surface as hard as I can.
Thanks for the warm welcome Glenda, Archangel and Wynne. Nice to have some encouragement. Was walking home from class at 9:30pm last night pretty reluctantly. But, since the car wasn't there, I din't really have a choice. Which was a good thing. I felt fine and relaxed when I finally walked in the door. Like the rest of you, I was waiting to see what the month's totals would be and was really pleased: walked 115.8 miles and lost 10 lbs. And exercised (if you include my walks to work) for about 57 hours. I've found that having the goals helps, but sometimes I just have to put my head down, forget about the goals, and literally look at my feet and keep them moving. Any other success stories this morning?
Congratulations, Glenda! Good Deal Archangel! Welcome, Tony! Like Glenda, I have been so waiting for TODAY! I was told by spouse that this waking up so early is crazy. HA! 96 miles to go! Thanks Glenda. I believe this afternoon, I shall endulge in water with lemon! You did it. and lost weight. You proved it. I am so glad. This month will be my challenge. I hope to figure it out. Blessings to all. Have a wonderful day. The fish tank is brilliant. I really enjoyed reading that. Glenda, wow... how is your weather??? Smiles to all... Wynne
Hi Wynne. Congrats on getting up early. I find those early morning hours to be precious. They're the quietest parts of the day - the best time, really, to reflect. Keep it up!
Thank you! What you said rang true for me as well. Sometimes when I walk, I just look down at my feet and just keep going. My really hard time is home after work. I can keep all of my calories just fine until then. I am the only one who keeps gaining weight, unlike the rest of you who are losing. This month is short, and it is my first challenge to complete, so, we shall see. Take good care of those fish!!! Wynne

I have been waiting for this day all month. I couldn't wait to see where I would be on January 31st. Let me tell you, I'm thrilled with the results. I have been on many, many diets, and I know the key to weight loss is too exercise as well as eat correctly. However, I lose interest after just a few weeks and was not able to stay motivated in the past. I think what is different this time is that I have a goal (100 miles per month) and I have a group of supporters to check in with. Thank you Wynne and Archangel for all your inspiring notes and kind compliments. Now let's tackle February's goal. Glenda
Hey all
I turn 50 in 5 months and started to get serious about counting calories. Among other
things, I"ve been walking to work, 2 miles (exactly - boy is THAT convenient!) each way,
five days a week. The challenge has been doing it on the weekends. So, I put a fish tank
in my office. Now, even on the weekends, I have a reason to walk there; I need to feed
the fish. Seems silly, but it works.
Putting in 28 to 32 miles a week. Fingers crossed that I can keep this up and just make it
part of my regular life - unquestioned habit.
Cheers
Tony
Welcome to the group Tony, just try to stay focused on the job at hand you'll do just fine. Plus just remember the fish that'll help keep you motivated :).
Tony, you are so clever. I love the idea of giving yourself a reason to walk each day. Keep logging in, it's so good to hear what other people are doing to accomplish the 100 miles per month. It inspires all of us. I can't wait to see when Wynne will walk next...will it be with a friend after work, will she get up early and knock out 3-1/2 miles? What's going to happen to Archangel, when he takes his one day off? Will he be back ready to tackle the next 3 days? It's like a good book, you have to keep checking in to see what is happening with the characters in it.
Got up at 5:00, did the 3 1/2 miles. Slower, but yeah!!! Thanks Glenda, I will be thinking about things. 100 miles! You must be so proud! and to our bicycle friend, AMAZING. Have a great day everyone! Wynne Got to go to work.... no split pants today....LOL's Wynne

Hey all:
Just giving you an update on how tonights bike ride went.. I knocked off another 6.6
miles in 30 minutes on the stationary. I kept the resistance to what would be the
equivalent of a normal flat surface this time around as I didn't want my knee caps
shooting of my legs tonight. Tomorrow night will be interval training, I totally expect my
legs to only give me about 4 miles (gotta make it a little harder on myself for the last
day of the 3 days on 1 day off routine). My legs are feeling fatigued but in a good
way.. anyway I'll let you know how it went tomorrow night. Night all :)
hey all:
Just wanted to punch in with my daily total miles countdown for the month :) I'm taking
the 3 days on one day off strategy to knocking off the 100 miles in a month. Yesterday was
a whoppa! I was on the stationary bike for 45 minutes and knocked off 9.7 miles all while
doing intervals of about 10 minutes (high to low resistance every 10 minutes). By the time
I came off the bike I was cursing my "pasta belly". Anyways day 2 of my 3 day butt
whooping is tonight. I'm hoping to get another six miles knocked off my road to 100 miles.
Like Nike use to say.. "Just do it" :)
Marco
Hey Archangel, you are doing an amazing job. I like that you laid out a plan to work out, 3 days on and 1 day off. Personally, if I don't plan on walking everyday, I get lazy and side tracked. As it turned out, I missed 5 days of walking because I was out of town. I was a little distraught over missing days, but it all worked out in the end. Looking forward to the day when you and my buddy Wynne anounce that you have accomplished the 100 mile goal.

Well today is so important to me. I was able to prove to myself that I could walk 100 miles in one month. I am already planning on walking 100 miles in February and hopefully each month for the rest of the year. Before I accepted the challenge, I was worried that this challenge was for runners and really athletic people. It's not. I am a middle aged woman. I barely get the treadmill up to 3.5 mph. That is the fastest I have walked so far and I can't do it for very long. My goal is to log in miles and sometimes, on the days when I am really tired or my feet hurt from all the walking, I go just 3.0 mph. My only point in telling you that is to encourage you to keep going, even if you are tired when you start your exercise program. Just walk a little slower and log in those miles. If I feel strong enough later (like next month or in the Spring) to walk faster, I will push myself. So far, I am working out to the best of my ability.
Hello to everyone...Did a slow 5 mile walk this on the treadmill this morning. ( 5 yesterday as well) I have this hamstring problem (left side), and now some thing is up with my right leg. I used to be able to go over 4.0 with some elevation, and now pushing 3.6 is such a wicked struggle. It is like moving lead. I am stretching. Does anyone have any ideas what I should do? Like Glenda, I enjoy hiking, although sometimes I struggle walking/climbing UP, when I FINALLY GET THERE I feel like a million dollars. Right now, I doubt that I could hike. Tomorrow is another day. To walk before work tomorrow, I will have to get up about 5:10 to feed the animals and let them out, and then get on the treadmill. I will let you know tomorrow afternoon, how I did. I am so PROUD of everyone who logs in. YOU ALL ENCOURAGE ME!! Thank YOU!! We can do this together!!
OMG! You are so amazing! I have never been able to go over 4.0 miles on the treadmill. I'm a little concerned about the hamstring issue. Have you seen a doctor? Hiking does get you to that endorphine high, that makes you feel so good. Looking forward to hearing how Monday morning went for you.
Thank you, Glenda, I am impressed by you! The last couple of days your posts have encouraged me, big time. Today, I split my pants at work! My students were hysterical. I wrapped my scarf around my chegi for the day. Those were my FAT PANTS! You lost 10 pounds and I am way up. YET, February is around the corner and I am SMILING. Since we are putting it all out there, I am a binger. Thought for 5 whole years I had that beat. I had it beat. It is now a year come February where this has been rearing up its ugly head. But, just reading these posts, do help so much. SO, I coughed mucho last nite, and was up most of the nite. Did not make the morning treadmill. BUT A GOODNESS HAPPENED!!! One of my friends emailed me at work and asked me to go for a walk after work. I made myself go, it was FREEZING OUTSIDE (to me!) and yet, we walked 3 1/2 miles, so YEAH!!!!! I did it! I am on track. Made a very healthy dinner. Have not binged today. WOO HOO!
I am so glad your friend called you to go for a walk. I have 5 neighbors that like to hike the mountain behind our neighborhood. Some can only hike early in the morning before work and some can only hike on weekends. I hike 7 days a week, (Spring, Summer and Fall) because I know somebody is waiting outside for me. Take the lead of finding a friend or two to walk with and plan it the day before. If I don't plan to hike, I end up sleeping late and not exercising at all...at least that's what I did in 2011. Ha! I am not a binger, I am an over-eater. I was shocked when I started measuring my food when I found out what a 1/2 cup, 1 Tablespoon, etc., really looked like. Time to re-visit what you did to stop binging in the first place. For me, I can't stand to be full. I read an article one time that said to eat until you are no longer hungry. That's been working for me. Let me know how you are planning on dealing with the binging issue. Sometimes just writing it down will help you formulate a plan. And when you write it in your blog, the whole world knows and will cheer you on. Good luck Wynne.

Glenda, after reading your posting, I did 5 miles on the treadmill. My hamstring still hurts. I had to walk a lot slower. But I did it! the challenge is to keep it up. I am not sure, but all I can say is that, at this moment, I AM SMILING!!! If anyone is having motivational issues or even physical ones, I understand. Glenda is right. 31/2 miles a day ~ that is about an hour of slow walking a day. I am going to try to go back at getting up early before work again. I suppose I should just take it one day at a time. I might not have challenged myself without reading this website. THANK YOU ALL!!! Wynne

Alrighty so I'm the new guy to the MMC, i've had my sucess with losing some weight. However I seem to have a problem with sticking with it for the long haul. I'm 5'6 and currently at 205lbs which is kind of bad for someone my height (male). My utlimate goal is to get down to 170lbs So here I am. My job has me on my feet at times going from place to place so walking 100 miles in a month isn't the real issue for me. But I would love to get up to 100 miles on my stationary bike in addition to whatever I get in walking. So let the games begin! :)
With just 5 days left in the month I have already walked 92.5 miles this month. In addition, I have lost 10.2 pounds. Since my plan is to lose 30 pounds this year, I have broken the weight loss into three (3) phases so I just concentrate on losing 10 pounds in each phase. Breaking the weight loss down into 3 doable amounts, keeps me from being overwelmed by the larger number, "30". I feel good and am extremely happy that I stayed focused on my walking goal, which in return helped be burn the neccessary calories to lose 10.2 pounds. So, by February 1st I will be going to my next challenge/phase 2, which is to walk 100 miles in February and start working on the next 10 pound weight loss goal.
Glenda, I am SO VERY PROUD of you! Reading your posting has made me smile and inspired me. I am still sick, slacked off exercise big time because I cannot sleep from coughing. I have been smiling thinking that February is around the corner, and I can start logging in again. I am going on ze treadmill this morning! Blessings, Wynne

NEW!!!
posted by startaylor on 8:06 pm
Hey! So I just joined this website and I think its a great idea. I am trying to make this year my year to achieve many goals. I am trying to lose 30 lbs and also I just signed up for my first 5k at the end of March and I have never been a runner due to my asthma but I don't know if I just used that as an excuse. So now Im giving it a try. I was able to run 1 mile on the treadmill after deciding that I was going to do the 5k. If anyone has any advise to train with asthma and for beginners please post. Thanks!!
by ggschaef5760 on Feb 3, 2012 at 8:20 am
Hi Star, so happy to hear you joined us. I have no advice on how to train with asthma. I have no idea how to train to run a 5K, MY body was built for comfort, not speed. Go on line and see if there is someone with experience to help you with that question. Keep us posted on how you plan to proceed and with your progress. It inspires all of us.

I have asthma as well and am a beginning runner too! I am following the Couch to 5 K (C25K) program (google it- they have a step by step program to have you work up to running a 5K in about 2 months. :) Best of luck to you! I will be starting the C25K again myself this weekend so we can work towards a common goal together!
Hi everbody!

4 miles again this morning. Think I have to go to the doctor's after work. This coughing won't stop. Glenda, what's up? Archangel, wow! Hi to Tony and everyone.... Take good care! Wynne PS I think I figured out my hamstring issue. POSTURE!!!!!

Good work Wynne :) take care of that cough though.. :)
by ggschaef5760 on Feb 3, 2012 at 8:16 am
Hi Wynne, happy to hear you are going to the doctor for that cough...as about your hamstring isse too. What makes you think the hamstring pain is your posture? For months I was having hip pain and I started worrying. Then I noticed that my office chair was breaking down and leaning to one side. Once I replaced it with a new, firmer chair, the pain went away. I was spending 8 - 10 hours a day working from a chair that was causing my posture to be less then perfect. Keep us posted and keep walking...I see you racking up 100 miles in your future.
