On Track for January

posted by Wardcameron on 4:24 pm

I'm just joining this group but I like the focus on monthly achievable goals. So far (since Jan 3) I've put in 411 minutes on my wind trainer. Hopefully I can stay on track and reach the 1200 minutes by the time a month has passed. I just started tracking again on the 3rd and so far I'm down 7 pounds. Heres to keeping the scale moving in the right direction.

Walked around the PA Farm Show for about 3 hours but some of it was start/stop so I am tracking it has 90 minutes pushing a stroller as I was either carrying my 22 pound son or pushing him in the stroller. I figured it was about 2.5 miles plus I walked a mile on the treadmill last night. Heading to zumba in a couple of minutes to do two dvd segments for a total of 40 minutes (only tracking 30 though just to be sure I don't overcount)

Adding a minute goal to my mile goal

posted by mrsshady on 10:44 am

I am also working hard to lose about 25 more pounds so I know that the more exercise I get the better. On top of my mile goal for this month, I am also setting a minute goal of 850 minutes. As of yesterday I have made the following progress to my goal:
Exercise Goal:850 minutes
Minutes Exercised: 50
Minutes left to reach Goal: 800

by ggschaef5760 on Jan 11, 2012 at 11:42 am

Mrs Shady, good luck with your new goal and your new baby. Hopefully that 25 pounds will come off quickly.

Recommiting to the 100 mile a month

posted by mrsshady on 10:38 am

I am getting back to exercise after being on again off again since the c-section birth of my son exactly 9 months ago. I set a goal to run at least 2 5ks this year and am starting the C25K program. I will log at least 80 miles (mostly walking with a little jogging) this month given my late start.

hello to all! i just joined after getting back some scary test results about my cholesterol. it was sky high. i had surgery back in July and it affected my fitness routine big time. what a wake up call!!!  committing to 100 miles per month, starting yesterday(4 miles..im counting it!)  i had no idea my cholesterol was high. everyone should get checked to be safe.

by ggschaef5760 on Jan 11, 2012 at 11:38 am

Welcome Iron Rob.  Good thing you found out about the high cholesterol.  Good luck getting it under control.  I have been at this since 01/03/2012.  This challenge really helps you stay focused on your goal, while breaking it down into smaller accomplishments, like 4.0 miles per day.  Keep posting your progress.

So far, so good!

posted by ggschaef5760 on 6:29 pm

I committed to the 100 mile/per month challenge on January 4th.  So far I have  walked 27 miles.  I am finding that having a challenging yet doable goal is really inspiring me to work out and stay within a reasonable range of calories.  This past weekend my husband and I had to travel out of town.  Before we left on Saturday morning, I got up two hours early and walked 4.0 miles on the treadmill.  Saturday night we spent the night with our daughter and son-in-law.  My daughter agreed to walk with me Sunday morning before we headed back home.  As we were making plans, our husbands decided to join us, so rather then just walk around the neighborhood we headed to the Bosque (boss-key).  A Bosque is an area along the Rio Grande that is left natural for birds and animals/wild life.  Along one side of the path is the Rio Grande (river) and on the other side were luxury homes.  We walked in 3.0 miles and then turned around and walked 3.0 miles back to the car, so I was able to get in a 6.0 mile walk.  During our walk we saw four bald eagles, (one had a fish in it's talons), several porcupines, a blue heron, ducks, an ostrich, llama's and a camel.  I saw an eagle and a camel in the same day!  I was thrilled!  The ostrich, llama's and camel were in a fenced area at one of the luxury homes.  Looks like the homeowner had a little exotic animal farm. I told you all of that to tell you this...keep walking and keep reaching for your goals.  Along this journey, you never know what you'll come across.  In addition, how will we look and feel if we stick with this goal for a whole year?  Looking forward to hearing about your adventures, the miles you've logged on and your weight loss.  P.S, I've lost 6 pounds so far this year.  I know it will get a lot tougher from here on out, but I am determined to reach my goal.   Glenda

by wnaber on Jan 10, 2012 at 3:35 am

Glenda, that is so exciting! How wonderful, and a 6 mile bonus. The animals and the homes!! Good Deal. Have been very sick this weekend and still, my workout is down, but I am going to work, watching what I eat and drink, and hoping to start again.  Everyone, have a GREAT DAY!!! Wynne

by ggschaef5760 on Jan 10, 2012 at 8:32 am

Hi Wynne, good to hear from you.  You mentioned a "hamstring" issue, is it temporary?  Or do you have to exercise around it?  Sorry to hear that you have been sick.  Your health is extremely important and exercise can wait.  It may take some time for you to work up to the 100 mile challenge. Don't make yourself crazy trying to accomplish this goal the first month, get frustrated and quit altogether.  Take your time, you will get there. I haven't found anybody in my social circle; friends, husband, children, etc., to join me in this challenge.  So I am extremely thankful to have a Blogg-Buddy like you.  Please don't give.  Your notes of encouragement are needed.  How can I encourage you?

by wnaber on Jan 11, 2012 at 3:58 am

Hi, GG, I seem to work around my hamstring. There are days when it aches, and others when it doesn't bother me. My cough is pretty bad, and I was sort of laughing thinking that was bad enough, but then I pulled something in my neck, and yesterday at work was hard. The heating pad really helps. I am looking forward to the 100 mile challenge. My goal this month was 80, but I am behind. As soon as I feel better, I will start again. YOU KEEP GOING!!!! Have you done this before? Keeping in touch will encourage me. Have a really good day, Blessings, Wynne PS.... Time for the shower! Work awaits.....

by ggschaef5760 on Jan 11, 2012 at 11:50 am

Wynne, you poor baby!  No I have not done this before if you are referring to the 100 mile challenge.  I am however an old pro at putting weight of and taking it off.  Ha! I looked up Sleeping Giant Mountain and the elevation is 739 feet.  I live in New Mexico at the base of the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) mountain range.  The elevation of the town I live in is over 7,000.  Take care of yourself, there is always time to tackle this goal.

Hey, Glenda, how is your weather? It is pouring here today in Connecticut, but thankful for NO SNOW!! How are your miles going? I hope everyone is going strong. Have a wonderful day! I still cannot get over the camel and the ostrich! LOL's!  Keep going! Wynne

Good for you!  When I saw the number 1,200, I thought it was huge.  When broken down (30/1,200 = 40 minutes per day).  It seems very doable.  Keep us posted.

The person who thought up the 100 mile challenge is brilliant!

posted by ggschaef5760 on 8:13 am

Like most of you, I just logged on to this web site a few days ago. I was looking for a group to join and kept coming back to this one.  At first I thought, this group is for athlete's...there's no way I can walk 100 miles per month.  In the Spring, Summer and Fall, I hike every day with a group of neighbors (I am fortunate to live at the base of a mountain that has some great hiking trails).  When we hike a low trail we travel 2.5 miles and when we hike the high trail it is 3.2 miles. So I did the math, I already hike/walk a minimum of 75 miles a month already.  I just need to push myself a little bit and I can obtain this goal.  Taken one day at a time, there should be no reason why I can't meet the 100 mile challenge.  I've mentioned this challege to a few friends and my husband, so far nobody wants to join me.  I really need all of you in this group, we can encourage each other.  One more thing, I have been trying to take off 20 - 25 pounds for the last 4 years, so I get caught up in calorie counting and feeling deprived.  Since I have been focused on obtaining this goal, I have been less focused on feeling deprived of my favorite things (a glass of wine for example).  I look forward to eating healthy and getting on the treadmill every day.  It's like a game to me.  June 10, I will be 52 years old.  My goal is to be 145 pounds by then.  Wish me luck!

I have taken on a challenge to treadmill 20 miles this week. I will be able to do this  I really want to add some strength training as I am quite jiggly and 12 pounds up. I would like to try a yoga class. My gym only has them offered in the am when I am working. I bought a tape but haven't tried it yet.  I am tired after work, so I get up early to walk. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

by ggschaef5760 on Jan 6, 2012 at 8:25 am

I walk in the morning as well.  If I wait until after work, there are too many things that can get into the way and prevent me from my goal.  I am also feeling jiggly.  I am hoping that the walking will help burn calories and take the jiggly stuff off of me.  You hear all the time how people just "walk off" the pounds. I am going to test that statement.  It's the beginning of a New Year and you may have  plans to do too much.  Maybe at first you should just concentrate on your first goal of 20 miles per week.  Once you do that, then add in the yoga.  Keep in mind I am not a professional.  But, I think the biggest thing here is that you don't get frustrated and quit.  As you get stronger and less jiggly, you can accept a new challenge...like yoga.

by wnaber on Jan 7, 2012 at 5:56 am

Thank you, ggs! I wish you well, too. I live in Connecticut, and funny, had some trouble climbing Sleeping Giant ( a small hike, but elevated) and I am a walker! I am proud of you that you hike. I always feel so proud of myslef when I get the chance. (and get to the TOP!)  I only have one friend who likes to hike. I also like the idea of the 100 mile a month. I thought I would keep my goal doable this week. I have this hamstring issue. To increase my miles, I would have to be on the treadmill exactly at 5:10. I know many who do it. I am on by 5:30 and that is a push. Well, you have given me something to think about. I will wish you well this week, and keep on logging as well. Keep in touch, take good care, Blessings, Wynne
