Nice going Marky123.  Are you walking outside or on a treadmill?  The weather is still awful in New Mexico, so I will have to wait a little longer before I start hiking again. Enjoy your weekend. Glenda

I am walking outside, spring has arrived a little early here in Canada, so that has helped my progress.

Excited about the weekend!

posted by mrsshady on 10:47 am

My husband and I are joining some of our close friends for a trip up to New York's "wine country". We have never gone on such a trip so I am super excited! Although I am not a huge wine fan (I prefer the fruity 'girly" drinks when I do decide on the rare occasion to partake in alcohol) doing a wine tasting tour is on my bucket list. It just sounds so romantic and reminds me of all the novels so as naiave as it sounds I am really looking forward to it.
I found out last night that we will be leaving around 8 and taking snacks and such to hold us over for lunch. This is my game plan... I am going to pack some turkey and ham sandwiches on whole wheat light bread, some hard boiled eggs, cheese and whole grain crackers, baby carrots, several bottles of water, bananas and apples. That way we will have a nice selection and can share. I guess we are stopping at an ice cream place that we were told has delicious homemade ice cream. I plan to get a baby or small size. We will be doing a few tastings but I will only drink the ones I actually enjoy and discard the ones I don't, saving me precious calories. We are stopping somewhere for supper- hopefully not super late. I decided I will get up early to get in some serious calorie burning before we leave. I will wear my pedometer to see how many extra steps I can fit in.
This evening we are taking our little man to pick out chicks and a duckling or two for one of his early Easter gifts. I need a few groceries so I will do a few extra laps around the store and providing the weather is nice when I get home from work, take a nice 4 mile walk with my sister and Josh. Enjoy your Friday evening and Saturday friends! I will try to check in Sunday :)

MrsShady, have fun.  And of course while up in New York, if you see Marco, tell him to check in.  It's good to hear that you are going to find little ways to include exercise in your trip.  When I go out of town it seems like I don't eat as well and I gain weight.  I think the secret to maintaining on a trip away from home is to get in some exercise whenever you can.  Let us know how it goes.

That sounds like a wonderful weekend, very well planned out.  Have a great time!

Long day yesterday...but today is beautiful!

posted by cateduke on 10:18 am

Hi, all!  Yesterday was a really long day for me, with no chance to get in a real workout (other than walking up and down the stairs at my office 4 times - and I work on the 5th floor).  Had to be at work early for a meeting with a client, then at the end of the day I had to rush home to change clothes and drive back into town for a different kind of meeting.  A couple times per month I am a volunteer speaker for a panel called the Victim Impact Panel.  People who are convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are court ordered to come to one of these meetings and listen to people speak about how drunk or impaired driving has affected their lives.  Years ago, when my son was little, my fiance was killed by a drunk driver.  I go to these meetings and tell a group of strangers (usually between 150-200 people) about the most painful time in my life.  It is emotionally draining each time I do it, but I believe it really helps give people an incentive to make different choices when it comes to drinking and driving in the future.  Anyhow...it was nearly 11:00 when I got home last night, then had about two hours worth of homework to do.  Today I am tired, but the sun is shining and I am looking forward to a beautiful day!  Plan to get in a good workout tonight, and I am going to keep myself busy this weekend so I don't have too much time to graze through the kitchen, lol!
Happy Friday everyone!

Tony, your news is wonderful!!! It is March, and you are nearing your June goal! Now that is a WOWZA!!! I am happy for you. I learn something always. Today I learned that even when you don't feel like it, you don't let yourself quit, and look how far you have come!! And of course, Glenda, you, as well. TERRIFIC!!!   I think this is what this site and you, my new friends, have done for me.  Two of my sons came home from New Hampshire unexpectedly last nite. Extra dinners had to be made, and their favorite banana bread. That is a joy. There is stress between them and my oldest son, who lives at home (who shouldn't), and ,in the end, I found myself eating steak fries and chocolate that was left on the counter. One son slept in the basement watching TV (so I figured I would skip the treadmill this morning.)  BUT A FUNNY THING HAPPENED. Woke at 5:00 am, the animals were waiting for me to get up, fed them, let Simon, the dog, out, put on my sneakers, grabbed a big sweatshirt, and walked outside for an hour and 15 minutes.  I saw deer crossing the road, and saw who was up. I learned something too from doing this. I felt really good this morning.  I hadn't read your postings yet, so I got teary eyed. (stop laughing, Truth, Straight Up!!)  I am going to a long lost friend's for dinner tomorrow. She is serving Risotto. There will be lots of wine and STUFF. Glenda, I hear you when you say you are scared.  I just want to loose TWO pounds to see if I can do it.  That is my goal. So far it is March 9th and nada. I am PROUD of all of us for NOT GIVING UP OR STOPPING!!! wynne  PS Tony, I am also glad that even though you had some "immaturity" your way, you have still been able to post, good deal!

by cateduke on Mar 9, 2012 at 10:00 am

Wynne, it sounds like you had a mixed evening last night but then got up and started the day off beautifully!  Good for you!  Now, as you face going to your friend's dinner it seems there may be some challenges staying on track.  I would suggest trying to get in a little extra exercise today and tomorrow if possible...and then before you go to dinner, you might try to "pre-fill" your belly with some healthy, low cal food.  Maybe some apple slices w/low fat yogurt, or celery with cottage cheese.  If you feel somewhat full before you get there you will be less likely to overindulge once you are there.  Good luck to you this weekend, and have fun!
Cate

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 9, 2012 at 12:14 pm

Hi Wynne, I am so sorry to hear that you are having a stressful time with grown children.  I loved that you went for a walk all by yourself (something I never do), and that you  walked longer then usual.  Isn't it funny how hard it is sometimes to get outside to walk and then, you don't want it to end because you feel so good.  I must confess that I too get teary when I read the notes.  After all, we are total strangers to each other, but we are there to reach out to give advice, encouragement or joke around.  CateDukes advice is pure gold.  I wish I would have thought of it.  Good luck tonight at dinner.  Glenda

by awmarker on Mar 10, 2012 at 5:58 am

Yes, Cate's adviced is excellent. Get some good low cal food in you before you go so that you won't be hungry (or AS hungry) when the plates hit the table. Proud of you for walking despite the disruption. Very nice job!
Tony

Getting close!

posted by awmarker on 6:38 pm

Hey all. I have a sister in law in Manhatten. I could send her to find Marco but alas, there are just a FEW people in that neck of the woods. She might have trouble tracking him down without an address. But, for my part, I weighed in this morning at 223.4 lbs. That's only 3.4 lbs from my goal for mid June! I think about one and half more weeks and I'll be there wayyyyy early! Whoohoo! Then, of course, I'll have to set a new goal, since 220 is still about 20 lbs or so over where I should be. But, as the subject of this message says, I'm getting CLOSE!  One thing I've realized is that if I set my exercise goals based on my calorie counts per session (rather than time or distance) then I actually make more progress because as I get in better shape, I have to go longer. I don't let myself quit until I've burned off between 500 and 550 calories each day. The down side of this approach is that you need a decend heart monitor but at about $100 they're well worth the price (in my opinion). Anyway, that's the news. Hope all are well out there. Tony

Tony,  that is great news.  My goal of weighing 145 was for my birthday in June.  If I don't slip up, I will also reach my goal wayyyyy early!
I was wondering how you knew you had to workout longer (from your note below), now I realize you use a heart monitor.  What brand do you have? I would like to look into purchasing one.

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 9, 2012 at 11:53 am

Tony, tell your sister Marco is 5'6" and likes to ride stationary bikes.

by wnaber on Mar 9, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Glenda, this is pretty funny!!! ( Not that we can't find Marco, ~well that too, but that we are LOOKING for him!)  I think you are ABSOLUTELY going to dip BELOW your goal weight for your birthday, but for you and Tony, I have a secret about that. When I lost all of that weight (twice) well, the second time I NEVER thought I could do it, I didn't focus on the numbers. I just followed my little plan the best that I could. When I review my notebook, I have all of the gooddays, and the slip ups noted. And then miraculously, I found without knowing, that I had slipped below my target!!!  That is my wish for you and Tony. Then I know you will dance the hula!!!  OH YEAH!!!!    Manhattan is a dangerous place. I hope Marco didn't get hit by a rogue bus. Nite!

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 9, 2012 at 7:27 pm

Wynne, your note is very inspirational to me.  Thank you for sharing "the secret"! There are days when I feel like I am in the zone and nothing will stop me and other  days when I want to gnaw my own arm off.  I sincerely hope your stressful days are behind you and that you can get back to a weight and exercise plan that makes you happy.

Hi Wynne, no need to worry, I am not on my way to New York.  But when Marco checks in he is going to have to give us his telephone number so we can check on him.   My purpose for writing is to post my minutes.  The majority of the bloggers track their minutes as well as their miles.  I have a calendar that I write in every day, I track my weight, the minutes I walked, the distance and the calories burned. When I totaled up the numbers I was so surprised so thought I would write about them.

January - 107.04 miles,  1,961 minutes walked, and -12.4 pounds weight loss
February - 103.52 miles, 2,054 minutes walked and  -5.4 pounds weight loss
March 1st - 8th - 33.76 miles, 640 minutes walked and  -1.6 pounds weight loss I have not missed a day of walking in the last 19 days.
Okay, now it's time for a happy dance.

by mrsshady on Mar 8, 2012 at 6:14 pm

Woohoo! Super impressed and proud of your numbers and WOW what a weight loss already for March!

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 8, 2012 at 6:19 pm

I know my weight loss will slow down from here on out as I get closer to my goal.  I thought of you when I stood on the scale this morning.  I weighed 146.2.  I have not been this low in 5 years.  I am so happy and so terrified to eat the wrong foods.

by awmarker on Mar 8, 2012 at 6:42 pm

Glenda, I noticed a slowdown too. My walk to work - 4 miles round trip - used to be about 480 calories. Now that I've lost weight, that same trip is only 418 caloires. I used to get on the treadmill and run every third minute to burn off 550 caloires in an hour. Now (sadly) have to run faster, at a higher incline, AND every OTHER minute to reach that same calorie count. That's a bummer. But, of course, it's also sort of amazing since I wouldn't have been able to do any of that when I first started. So, more effort but I'll take the progress any day. Tony

by cateduke on Mar 8, 2012 at 11:03 pm

Eviz, I just wish I had sleeping pills! LOL's... I cannot sleep , ever, so I am of no help to you, sorry!  I don't count my minutes for the month, just my miles. I was ahead last month as I did a lot of hiking after work, which I am not doing so far. I am also exhausted.  I am hitting my three miles in the am. My weight has been fluctuating, but it is 2 pounds below where it used to fluctuate, so I am counting that as a success. The weekend is coming and that is always a worry time for me. Hope everyone is well. Get moving! Wynne

by cateduke on Mar 8, 2012 at 9:27 am

Hi, Wynne!  I, too, am a big insomniac.  I am lucky if I sleep 3.5-4 hours a night.  I do think that working out in the evening contributes to the insomnia.  I have had some limited success using relaxation techniques and avoiding caffeine towards the end of the day.  Beyond that, I don't know what to suggest!
Weekends are tough for me too...I tend to "graze" more on the weekends.  Hoping to stay disciplined this weekend.
Cheers, everyone!

Help Me

posted by ewiz80 on 11:30 pm

So i decided that I wanted to run a 5k so I started training and took the 100 mile challenge and have racked up 18.4 miles in four days. Since I have started working out I find that I am more productive during the day. I am a full time college student and I work 25-30hrs. a week. Im super busy all the time and always tired at the end of the day. However, since I started working out I cannot sleep when its bed time. I have no clue what to do and I do not want to take sleeping pills everynight. Someone please help!

by awmarker on Mar 8, 2012 at 6:02 am

Hi Ewiz. What time during the day are you doing your workouts? If you're doing them too late during the day it may be that that's the culprit. I've found that since I started exercising, particularly in the morning or afternoon, that I sleep like a dead person even though I'm subject to a fair bit of insomnia like Wynne. You should also look at your dietary routine to see if you've changed anything to accomodate your workouts. For instance, if you've added some caffeine or sugar late in the day so that you can accomodate a workout AND work AND school, then that might also be contributing. But I'm not an exercise specialist so take all this with a grain of ... well, I won't say salt. Let's just say caution. Tony

Wow, and Mrsshady..just so you know.. you ate  homemade liverworst, and I am VERY JEALOUS!!!  Okay, everyone. I did not fulfill my goals today of self care. I am blaming it on marco who has disappeared.  I miss his hello's to us. I did okay with eating, THANK GOODNESS, not stellar perhaps, but no binging. I wanted to be perfect in self care. HA. I got to work and the security guard asked me how I was... so I shared... (thank goodness for her!)  and so it went. I was on a roll.  Students were challenging, this is testing week in Connecticut and the pressure is on.  A woman driving next to me call me a name this morning while changing lanes! I took it as a compliment. I guess I will have to inititate practicing self care again tomorrow morning. I know I sound flip... Sorry.. it just feels good talking to you all.  I really need this.. ..I did my 3 miles this moring.  Wish it was more.  But I got to read your missives today, and that made all of the difference for me. Sweet Dreams, Wynne    PS Tony... we get free breafast, lunch, and snack,s here. One of our snacks was a tomato, snap sweet pea (like in chinese food) veggie. My students took out the seeds and we planted them. We were told by the  Science teacher that those seeds are "immature" and nothing will happen.  Seeds are immature??  Why I am wondering if you know bees if you will know seeds, but I  thought I would ask. Nite...

Hi, Wynne.  Sounds like quite a day!  Sleep well, and go forth again tomorrow...I think tomorrow will be a better day for me too.  Didn't get much workout in today, and eating was great till I got home...then I kinda blew it.  Pffft!!!  One day at a time, right?
Blessings to all!  :-)

Immature seeds... that calls up images of seeds pushing and shooving each other in the back seat of the car on a long drive. Sadly, no, I don't know about immature seeds. Though, if they're anything like immature men (which might well be most of us) then they're probably uncommunicative with a higher self regard than is actually warranted. Speaking of which - thanks for the segue, Wynne - I've got to deal with some issues with an adult child and may be out of the loop for the next few days. In my absence, keep logging those miles, everyone! Tony

Hi Everyone doing this awesome challenge! I am curious where everyone's progress is at on the 6th day of the month!
I am at 15 miles...going out this evening to get at least 3 or 4 done. Does anyone have weekly goals to keep themselves motiviated with? I know Saturdays are usually my long runs..so I am hoping for double digits consistantly happening on the weekends. Just looking for ideas and encouragements! Have a good run!

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 6, 2012 at 12:31 pm

Hi Believer, my exercise of choice is hiking, but currently am walking on the treadmill until the weather gets better and the snow melts.  My goal is to walk off 500 calories per day, which takes me approximately 80 minutes per day.  I have walked 17 days in a row now (usually if I am out of town, I skip walking on those days). So far as of March 6th, I have walked 25.15 miles.  My goal is to walk at least 100 miles per month and I want to do it every month this year.  Looks like you are doing great!  Keep it up.

Hello, Believer.  I am currently in my "winter" routine.  That means I have to work out indoors.  My current goals are to walk/run/e-trainer/bike a minimum of 35 miles per week, plus at least one hour of weights (30 min. twice a week).  So far this month I have 4.7 miles on treadmill/e-trainer, 32.7 miles on the bike, and 30 min. of weights.  So, basically right on track!  Once the sun comes out a bit, I will switch my training to mostly cycling plus weight training.  My goals then are a minimum 125 miles per week on the bike and at least one hour of weights.  I am actually hoping to hit about 150 miles per week, but 125 as a minimum is acceptable.  :-)

by awmarker on Mar 7, 2012 at 8:44 am

Hey Believer. Yes, my goals are about 30 miles a week but actually, the only thing that gets me there is walking to work every day. It's amazing how many miles you can tick off on the chart if you walk or bike to and from wherever it is you're employed. Like you, I do extra miles on the weekends. Mostly that's to keep me out of the house and away from the refrigerator. And, as a strategy, I've found that's reasonably effective. Welcome to the group.

I woke up to find it snowing this morning!  Very unusual for this part of Oregon to have snow in March.  I am sooooo ready for warm weather and sunshine...by this time of the year I am heartily sick of being indoors!  :-)
Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Hi CateDuke, I live in the mountains of northern New Mexico.  We have been having snow off and on last week.  Yesterday and today are nearly 60 degrees. I know what you mean about not being able to get outside.  I usually hike 9 months out of the year and this year it has been too snowy and icy to hike.  If the weather stays nice I will be able to get outside soon.  It seems less like exercising and more like playing when I hike with my friends.

by cateduke on Mar 6, 2012 at 1:45 pm

Hi, Glenda.  I know what you mean.  In the summer when I get to ride my "real" bike (instead of the stationary bike) it doesn't feel as much like exercise...it's just fun!  Last summer I almost hit my goal of riding 100 miles in a day.  I made it 82 miles...I am hoping this summer I will finally make that goal!  I can't wait for the sun!!!

Too Much Chocolate...and fat...and junk

posted by mrsshady on 6:25 am

I definitely have not made good food choices the last two days. Yesterday in particular I did great until 3 pm but after subbing all day in Kindergarten I had to sit through an hour plus PSSA administrator training (YUCK!). They passed the candy dish around and I ate 2 mini York Peppermint Patties and a Hershey Kiss. Not bad right? Well I had to make some copies for my tutoring kiddos and in the faculty lounge someone had made mini (ping pong ball sized) coconut eggs. I LOVE those and ended up eating 2 of them on the way down the hall. BLAH! They were delicious mind you and the 1% milk I washed them down with from our snack wasn't so bad.

Fast forward 60 more minutes and I am finally getting home after 10 hours away from my little man. Played with him and talked to my hubby a bit then started supper. Decided to make bacon (our home cured bacon from butchering) egg and cheese muffin sandwiches and hashbrowns. Cheese is definitely a weakness of mine and my son is starting to love it so he and I snacked on that while the bacon was frying. For some reason I wanted something crunchy with my cheese so I grabbed a couple of almonds and that made me want something sweet so I added a mini milk chocolate bar (40 cals) plus another kiss. ARGH! I easily added 500-700 calories to my day in less than 2 hours! Plus as a result of all the sugar and junk I ate I ended up having a belly ache and didn't do my treadmill workout. I did workout with my little man a bit and did some wii fit stuff but very frustrated indeed!

Today is a new day though and I don't have to work other than tutoring from 2:45-5:15 so I will commit to eating healthy and getting at least 120 minutes of exercise in. Tonight is Zumba and Biggest Loser so Tuesdays are definitely good days for me! After my mini workout yesterday I have 830 minutes and 83.5 miles to go :)

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 6, 2012 at 8:09 am

MrsShady,  I had to laugh at the description of what you ate and how it all happened.  I totally see myself in that story.  One time I made a batch of  cookies, and kept nibbling on them until I ate half of them.  I knew my husband would wonder what happen to half the cookies so I ate the other half, cleaned up the kitchen and he never knew I made cookies that day.  Yes, I felt sick and disgusted with myself.  I don't know why that happens and I am powerless to stop it when it does.  All you can do is start over again  with a new day.  I am so proud of you recognizing the bad food choices and then deciding that you will try harder the next day. Good luck today.  Glenda

by mrsshady on Mar 6, 2012 at 8:28 am

As I read it again, I had a giggle myself. Sadly, I have done a similar cookie thing too! I ate close to half a batch but then put the rest in the freezer so I wouldn't see them. Then I pulled them out the next morning for my hubby's lunch box. Thank you for the goodluck :)

by cateduke on Mar 6, 2012 at 8:57 am

Hi!  I had to chuckle a bit myself reading your post.  I generally don't like chocolate at all...but brownies are the exception.  As ashamed as I am to admit it, I have baked up a batch intending them for my husband, only to eat the whole darn pan of them before he came home.  I too cleaned up the mess without him ever knowing and was too full and sick to my stomach the rest of the night.  He was so sweet, thinking I was coming down with a bug, he made his own dinner that night and made me go to bed early while he took the dogs out, cleaned up his dishes, and folded a load of laundry.  Oh the guilt I felt!!!!....but we move on, right?!!?
Hope today is wonderful and bright for you...enjoy!

I love the confessions!  Like I keep saying, before I joined this group, I felt totally alone on my journey to better health, weight loss and exercising. It's so good to hear the success stories, but I also like to hear that I am not the only one that fails miserably from time to time.  Okay, now that those crazy days are behind us, let's move forward.  Glenda

Made a promise to myself today that in EVERYTHING I DO and SPEAK TODAY ~ I will practice self care. I will let you know this evening how I did. Glenda, I don't have resistance bands, well, i might have, i have this thing that my dad used in rehab, but today I want to say I will do 10 minutes of weights or stretching. Goal for today. Went to the gym tonight and did about 30 minutes of upper body weights and core work.  Then sat on the stationary bike and very carefully spun my legs for 30 minutes.  Not much of a workout, but got 7.7 miles in.  Knee actually felt a little less stiff after spinning for a bit!  I'll take it easy for a couple of days, then get back to some good workouts.  Yay!

Last night, after coming home from a great bike ride, I smashed my knee into the corner of my desk and displaced my knee cap.  I have an old injury to this knee (got hit by a car while riding my bike...almost lost my leg!) so this happens from time to time.  Was able to pop it back into place, but within a minute my knee swelled up to the size of a large grapefruit.  It will be a few days before I'll be able to work out on it again.  Dang!!!  :-(  So....tonight I'll go to the gym and do some upper body weights and core strengthening exercises instead.  It'll be better than doing nothing at all.

(lite one's for me!)  It is amazing how lazy I am after work.  I will... if you will, and anybody else!! Tony's Mac and Cheese did sound good. I opened my Resolution Notebook too this am... Just so you know, I ate PROTEIN in the form of hard boiled eggs. (Had a craving.) Or worse, under the covers tonite??? Ah... I really need a laugh!!!! Blessings, Wynne

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 5, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Wynne, you are right we need to start weight training and I agree with you that we need to start with light weights.  I think the only way to squeeze weight training in for me is to do one body part; biceps, triceps, back, etc. per day, due to the lack of time (I already walk 80 minutes per day).  So that means just 3 different types of exercises for that one muscle.  Do any of you see a problem with my plan?  Will I still be getting enough of a strengh training work out?  Talk to me MrsShady, CateDuke, Marco, Tony, Marky123, and of course Wynne.

by cateduke on Mar 5, 2012 at 3:37 pm

Glenda, have you thought about getting some resistance bands?  You can do legs and arms in about 10 minutes...and you can do it just about anywhere.  I keep a band in my desk at work and try at least once a day to do biceps curls, triceps, and legs.  I love them!

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 5, 2012 at 5:55 pm

Yes, I have resistance bands, I will give them a try.  I've used them in the past and I know a few workouts with them. Thanks for the suggestion.

by mrsshady on Mar 6, 2012 at 6:03 am

Glenda, I also have a pair of walking weights (mine are 1.5 pounders) that I sometimes carry with me on my walks and I sneak in bicep curls, rows, etc. while walking. This way I get a mini strength training during my cardio and don't have to commit to much more time. Also, I have found that body weight exercises such as burpees, planks, pushups, crunches, bicycle abs, bridges, etc. don't take very much time, can be done pretty much anywhere, are free! AND work wonders for toning your muscles. Good luck!

I have walked 16 days in a row now.  I walk until I burn at least 500 calories, which takes me anywhere from 75 - 82 minutes depending on how fast I walk.  Since I started in January I have not walked this many days in a row.  My weight has stayed the same over the last three days, which thrills me.  I am one of those people that if I am not losing weight, I'm gaining weight.  I have not mastered how to maintain my weight.  I finally got down to 147.0 (I started out at 165.6).  Yahoo!  My goal is to be 145.0.  I am getting really close.  My plan to obtain that goal is to stay on the diet I am on now (Flat Belly Diet) and continue to walk every day with the goal of burning 500 calories per walk.  I would like to add in some weight lifting as well.  Good luck this week everybody.  Glenda

Lasagna... not so bad

posted by awmarker on 6:21 pm

My wife made the Light Meat and Cheese Lasagna from America's Test Kitchen this evening. It was fabulous and only 340 calories. I recommend it if you haven't tried it. As for exercise, today was my "light" day. I didn't go to the gym but instead just went for a walk. 6.17 miles. And, it was a gorgeous 60 degrees here. All three of my honey bee hives survived the winter, which is great. Last year, none of the hives made it through so I'm thrilled. Took my daughter to the park and played frisbee with her... I'm beat.

Hi! I am new to LIVESTRONG and to this group.

posted by cateduke on 12:35 pm

Hello, everyone!  I am 42 years old, with a full time job, and currently attending college half time (taking 2-3 courses per term).  I just started taking classes last summer, which is when my normal diet and exercise routine was blown apart.  I was feeling overwhelmed trying to keep up with classes while working, so I mostly gave up my daily exercise time.  Instead of cooking healthy food, I started eating out more or throwing a frozen dinner into the microwave.  Ugh!
I live in the beautiful state of Oregon, which means six months out of the year I work out indoors.  My current goal, till the sun comes out for the spring/summer, is to work out a minimum of five hours per week.  This can be a combination of elliptical trainer, treadmill, stationary bike, dance, weights, etc.  Once the sun comes out, my goal will be to ride my bike a minimum of 125 miles per week.  I can't wait for the sun!  Also, no more fast food.  If I eat a frozen dinner, I will be careful to pick healthier choices.
I am excited to find this group, being accountable really helps me stay motivated!

by cateduke on Mar 4, 2012 at 12:39 pm

Oops!  Forgot to post my progress for this week.  So far (since Friday) I have about an hour and twenty minutes of cardio in.  The sun is out today, so I am planning to go for a bike ride later.  Hopefully at least 20 miles, which due to being out of shape will probably take me about an hour and thirty minutes or so to do.  Will post actual results on my ride after I am finished.  Thanks!

by marky123 on Mar 4, 2012 at 1:23 pm

Welcome CateDuke!  Good plan.  It sounds very doable.  Your life sounds very busy and full.  One thing I do on the weekends is cook up food and freeze it, cut up veggies so I have somehting quick to grab, or have a bowl of grapes cleaned and ready to go.  When I freeze things, I write the calorie count on the outside of the container or zip-lock bag.  Good luck!

by cateduke on Mar 4, 2012 at 5:46 pm

That's a great idea!  One of my favorite treats is frozen blueberries.  I never thought about writing the calories on the outside of my snack bags.  Thanks!

Wynne, weight loss and good health are a journey that we are all taking together.  You know what you need to do.  You and I are both in our 50's and I'll bet that aren't many diets we haven't tried.  You know what works best for you (and what doesn't work).  It's okay to eat and drink things that don't promote good health from time-to-time.  Sometimes we just need to party.  Are you still walking and hiking?  Logging miles is very important.  Get back on track, we are all here for you.  Tony...pizza and champagne?  You know how to live my friend.  Glad both you and Wynne are back on track.  Glenda

After subbing we went for a walk/run- made it 3.25 miles in 42 minutes. After a supper of baked fish and cheesy California medly, I played on the floor with my son- doing a few body weight exercises and "Josh weight exercises" (He is up to 23 pounds now!). Then I did my C25K treadmill walk/run workout- 3 miles in 35 minutes. So my total for Friday was 130 minutes and 8.25 miles
995 minutes and 90.75 miles to go! I am hoping to subtract at least another 6 miles and 95 minutes today. I will keep you posted. Happy Saturday friends!

Happy Saturday, Mrs. Shady! Looks like you got out fo the starting block with some great numbers this month! It's only March 3rd and you've already knocked out nearly 10 miles. Way to go! Tony

Looks like you are staying on target MrsShady.  I am so proud of you.  Now exactly where do you buy "Josh Weights"?  Glad he is helping out with your workouts.

Good job!  Zumba sounds like fun...I wish my health club offered it during a time that I could take it.  Hope you have a great week!

I am a Newbie!

posted by believer on 2:12 pm

I started a challenge for myself to do a 1400 mile goal challenge by the end of the year. January was a 100 mile challenge. I did 110. February was another 100 mile challenge and I only did 70. So now its March! I am in! Stoked to find this group! I "WUN"...I walk/run. I do intervals of running for 2 minutes and walking for 30 seconds. I try to get long miles in on the weekends. Any ways..hi everyone! Plus I want to lose 15 pounds by May-ish...

by awmarker on Mar 1, 2012 at 6:19 pm

Welcome. Excellent routine. I do the "light weight" opposite; I walk 2 minutes, and run the third for my intervals. They all count. And, as long as you monitor your exercise AND your calories, I have no doubt you'll reach your goal. Again, welcome to the group!

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 2, 2012 at 9:54 am

Welcome Believer!  You have Wun into the right group.  We are a fun group that encourages each other, teases each other to lighten a mood, challenges each other and brags a bit from time-to-time.  We want to hear abount your plan and rejoice with you when you succeed. Glenda

by mrsshady on Mar 2, 2012 at 10:13 am

Welcome! I am trying to become a "runner" and currently "wun" myself :) Good luck on meeting your goal and as Glenda said, we look forward to encouraging and celebrating with you!

Minutes Goal Met! Mileage...not so much :(

posted by mrsshady on 10:18 am

Well passed my minutes goal of 1200 yesterday but didn't hit my mileage goal of 100. I am currently at 74.5 but should be able to hit 80 by tonight by doing 5.5 miles today. I WILL make it to 100 miles next month!
As for the scale...I lost a measly .5 pound this week for a grand total of about 2 pounds ALL month! Definitely not pleased with this. Although I know I have lost some inches I want to see that number on the scale go down. That being said here are my goals for March:
1)Track My Calories- If it goes in my mouth, it goes in the tracker!
2) Drink More Water- Up my water intake from 6-8 glasses a day to 8-10 glasses
3) Limit Sugars- Reduce my intake of added sugars. I already gave up baked sweets for Lent and am working on limiting candy- especially chocolate!
4) Push Myself! - Include some HIIT and try new workouts to burn major calories
Any other tips or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

MrsShady, I feel your pain when you talk about losing just 2.0 pounds.  (This is the part where Marco will scold us for weighing ourselves on the scale everyday.)  The first part of the month I lost and gained all month.  Then I went on the Flat Belly Diet and lost weight on the 4-day reduced calorie part.  Now I am on the 28 day program of just 1,600 calories a day and I am battling to keep the weight I lost off.   My weight has been creeping up a bit.  I don't understand it.  It sounds like you are working out very hard and burning lots of calories.  I burn 500 calories per day and only eat 1,600 calories.  The weight should be coming off at a regular rate.  Okay, no more boo boo faces (reference to your subject line)!  Let's suck it up and see what March brings.  I am really proud of your minutes goal, that's pretty amazing.  And really impressed that you wrote down, your next plan and the 4 steps you need to take to accomplish it.   Seeing it in writing does help.  Good luck in March!

Glenda, Mrsshady, Tony and MARCO!!  I am so proud of all of us. Mrsshady... March is YOUR month, but I HAVE TO TELL YOU, the rest of us KNOW you have BLOWN us  all away with TIME if not miles... who can do with a baby what you do? You have my eyes crossed!! I know Glenda feels the same way. AND ALL OF YOU... I am thrilled you lost weight. I "dun't" care if you all think it is just a little bitty... JUST THINK! You might be dissappointed, but HA!!! I GAINED WEIGHT!  Okay, So, I do ALWAYS listen to Glenda as she is VERY WISE and FUNNY as well, and I have begun tracking ALL of my CALORIES.  Even my Martini! I almost fainted when I looked up the calories. Tony, I thought it was on par with a glass of wine.... Moving along.. Marco, my GOD!  I read your missives and laugh hysterically! Yet, I stagger in amazement. WOWZER.... You be something... Now Tony, I have something to say. (Glenda, get ready!) I am now concerned! I am OLDER!!  You live in IDAHO!!!  You take the long way to and from work to work off calories. DEAR ONE! I am now worried! Are you wearing a HAT? A HEAVY COAT???? A THERMAL SCARF??  Mittens with warmers?  You take good care, boy-0!  I have been showing my students where all of you live. We are agog!  Glenda has told me all about where she lives. My hiker friends now believe she is the hiking bomb at her elevation!! You rock, Glenda! Watching Secretariat... My eyes are a closing... Nite all... You all are the best... wynne

I love reading your notes.  You are so good about giving eveybody a "shout out".  Tomorrow morning when I open my eyes I will say Rabbit, Rabbit. Good Night Wynne!  Glenda

by mrsshady on Mar 1, 2012 at 6:36 am

Thank you for the encouragement. Glenda, I looked up some of recipes and meal ideas for the Flat Belly Diet and I am intrigued. I think I will try some of them out! :) Wynne, I also love reading your notes! Happy March everyone!

by Archangel2029 on Mar 1, 2012 at 10:16 am

Glenda considered yourself scolded for weighing yourself everyday! I'm going to come out there and in the dead of night steal all your scales and leave a note! muhahahahahah (rubbing hands together like idiot mad scientist).

by Archangel2029 on Mar 1, 2012 at 10:18 am

Awesome work on the minutes Mrs.Shady it can't be easy juggling a family and exercising. Its times like this that I'm glad I'm single.

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 1, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Marco, today while I stood on the scale cursing, my husband suggested that I stop standing on the scale everyday. Something I have heard a few times from you in the last few weeks...what is it with you men?  I think he will hide it before you have a chance to steal it.  It's such a cool scale, it weighs you to the tenth of a pound, shows your fat mass, water weight and can predict the future.  I can't live without it.

by Archangel2029 on Mar 1, 2012 at 1:41 pm

Glenda, because  we men know that the scale is the enemy it makes you crazy when it goes in the wrong direction particularly when you know you've eaten well and exercised like a crazy person.  Me and your husband should have a bonfire and throw the scale in then have smore's :)

by awmarker on Mar 1, 2012 at 6:18 pm

Mrs. Shady. Hang in there! If the scale is going down, it's moving in the right direciton. And, your minutes a month are amazing. Keep on truckin!

by ggschaef5760 on Mar 2, 2012 at 10:06 am

Marco, my husband will bring the lighter fluid and fire wood to your little smore's party.  You are totally right when you say that the scale makes us crazy when it goes in the wrong direction.  MrsShady has been giving 110% and she was feeling a little down about the scale not showing her progress.  I  totally get where she is coming from. In the future, I will use the scale as a measuring device, and not let it effect the way that I see myself...as a good person or bad person.  (Bad Glenda eats a lot of smores.)  Thanks for the pep talk and the the threat of melting down something precious to me has scared me straight.

Month Two

posted by ggschaef5760 on 9:02 am

January - walked 107.04 miles and lost 12.4 pounds.
February - walked 103.52 miles and lost 5.4 pounds.
I am happy that I lost 17.8 pounds so far this year.  And can hardly believe that walking a minimum of 100 miles per month is so doable.
Two months down and ten months to go.  I am looking forward to what the year will bring.  I hope you all hang in there so we can share our success stories with each other.

by mrsshady on Feb 29, 2012 at 10:31 am

Congratulations on such a remarkable weight loss Glenda! I am impressed and like you, hope to stick with this for the long haul.

by wnaber on Feb 29, 2012 at 5:06 pm

Glenda, you know I be cheering you on!  Remember the first words tomorrow out of your mouth must be, "Rabbit, Rabbit,"  for GOOD LUCK!!!"  I am thrilled for you!  Read what I wrote above! Smiles to you, Wynne
