Hi everyone.

I'm starting my journey this week, trying to change the way I eat and add exercise to my life.  I joined the YMCA as my 30th birthday present to myself, and it's been going well...  but now I have to work on changing my diet to be healthy.  I'm really not into calorie counting or strictly portioned diets... So far, my strategy is to change meals in my household from "meat and starch" to more "veggies and fiber".  I'm only using portion control for the meat and starch part, and allowing myself to eat vegetables until I'm full.  This is only day 2... but I hope it's a strategy I can stick with.  My starting weight is 215 lbs, and my goal is to get to 150.  Wish me luck!  ;)

good luck. i wasn't a big calorie counter either, but tracking my food on here has been very helpful. you could always do it for a week or two to get an idea of just how much you're eating and then adjust from there. whichever you choose, you're making a great choice. good luck to you and welcome to the group! :)

I actually took your recommendation to heart and looked at the food tracker here... it's a lot easier than I thought it would be, so I'll give it a try.  I'll probably find a ton of hidden calories that I never thought of.  Thanks!

I always swore I'd never be a calorie counter.  Now I'm practically obsessive about it.  I like going to the stores and searching for the lowest calorie brands and such.  :)  Never say never!
Good luck on your journey!  You're definitely moving in the right direction!

The YMCA has so many fun classes, take advantage of it! I got my membership when I turned 30 too. I spent a lot of time on the treadmill and elliptical at first just because I was shy and thought I couldn't keep up in the classes. I started out with a Zumba class and now I'm addicted to that and several others. I've been amazed at how my stamina and strength have impoved, not to mention how many calories each class burns!

I haven't done a class yet... same thing - I'm a little shy.  My Y has a swimfit class that I'd like to take, maybe I'll take it this week.  :)
On the subject of calorie counting... how low is too low?  On day one, I can't seem to eat enough to keep up with my recommended net intake of 1660.
Calorie goal: 1,664   Consumed: 1,868   Burned: 842   Net calories: 1,026
It's 11:30pm now, and I don't think I'll be eating anything else today.  Is that bad?

I ignore the net calories and just focus on my total before it subtracts the workout calories burned.

Sounds good.  I'll try that.  Thanks!
