Gideon, I read your wonderful blog about this topic...
I have a couple of questions. My husband has a nice Polar F11 and I have a $50 or so
Mio - just a watch - no chest strap. He consistently gets readings of 100 plus
calories more than I do when he is doing the same workout. I try to very frequently
check my HR, (but sometimes my monitor doesn't give me a reading and I have to do it
again, and by then my HR has dropped considerably...)
I know it all depends on your age and gender, does it also depend on your fitness
level? I'm asking all of this because my b'day is coming up and I'm trying to decide
if I should ask for a better HRM. :-)
I am just finishing week 10 of P90X and with the exception of pull ups (which I give my
all with the chair), I do the workouts pretty consistently- able to do most
everything...except some of the twisty one legged things - LOL!
I'm soon to be 45 yrs old, 5'7" and currently 144 lbs. I think it's key to know how
many calories I'm burning as I'm trying so hard to work with my diet and eat enough...
I am getting readings of 65 - 70 cals doing AbRipper. And today I got 453 doing
Kenpo. I give it everything I've got - twisting, punching kicking - my HR is usually
in the 150's when I'm going strong. It's in my diary too - how many calories I burn
doing each workout and I think I write which workout. I'm not counting in any other
activities -just P90X.
What do you think? Am I getting accurate readings? Do I just not burn as many
calories being a 44 yr old "normal weight range" woman?
Thanks for your input.
Stacy
FITNESS LEVEL MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE......
All factors include: Fitness level-Gender-Age-weight.
.....Since Calories burned are calculated on Heart Rate... and Heart rate is an indicator of Fitness level... there can be large differences even if age and Gender are the same...
......Someone who is a relatively inactive will be "WORKING" Much harder, TO DO THE SAME TASK,
..This will show as a Higher "resting" heartrate, as well as a tendency to stay in the higher ranges while working out...
... Higher rate= ... higher calories burned..
.......Along with that &... comparing you and the hubby...
...Men and women burn at different rates as well.... Generally Men have more lean muscle mass.(overall body weight).. MORE Muscle (and weight) mass means Higher Calorie burns just for breathing!..lol..
Seriously... one way to see this Graphically is to go to the nutrition book and Calculate both yours and your husbands RMR-(Resting Metabolic Rate)-your body weight X 10...odds are he has a higher body weight and he will have a higher RMR and therefore has a higher Calorie requirement because of a higher base burn rate.... It is as much a function of Weight as anything so that's why I say GENERALLY..
...If you took a fit guy weighing 150 lbs and a relatively unfit woman weighing 170lbs in the same workout She would burn more calories...
Along with Weight it has some to do with Lean mass to Fat ratio too..even though that is getting really technical..bottom line is Men are generally more lean in their Phiysical make up..
As far as age goes.. our Max heart rates come down some and so do our RMRs.. On a monitor all that really does is Change your max workout HR... Calories still burn the same with Heartrate.. You just Shouldn't Push it as hard.. Still as I said in My Stress test post.. The max heart rate formula is a general guideline for Sedentary people and atheletes can have a Much Higher max..
Well I think I beat that to death!
Have fun...BTW.. Ask for the better monitor... if you can have it... why not!! lol
Happy Birthday! (early)

Gideon got you covered! That's a solid answer man!
I would totally get a heart rate monitor with a chest strap...not having to tap a button or anything has been awesome!
thanks for the great info again.
And we did X stretch this AM - neither wore our monitors, so I estimated calories based on "stretching" in the database and I supposedly burned 163 cals and hubby burned 222. It makes sense.
But that doesn't make it fair - LOL!
I am looking at a polarF4 - nouveau said that's what he got, I think? But I also saw an omron on Amazon - with good reviews for only 30 something bucks...it has a chest strap.
I'm just wondering how much I'd actually use the "extra" stuff on the polar...that makes it so much more expensive.
Stacy,
I've been doing some research about the Omron HR-100C Heart Rate Monitor, which is the $30ish dollar one I'm sure you're looking at on amazon...and it seems to be ok!
For an entry level HRM at that price range...I'd try it out. Seems easy to program and fairly accurate (just from the reviews I've read).
The things I find I'm using most is the Zone Alarm...which beeps when I'm below my nominal range AND above it...so I know if it's silent during something like KenpoX, that's I'm "in the zone" so to speak, and the calorie counter...which is based of an age/weight/height setting you input when you first buy the monitor. Also, you can tweak if you have heart problems or on medication or something like that.
For the money...it seems ok for sure! See if you can talk to someone that actually has one!
Hi Nick. I am still trying to decide on this one. I definitely need a new one. Mine would not read my HR at all during plyo this AM. And I hate having to stop and wait for it.
But I am afraid to get the Omron - my wrist measures only 5.75" around, so even the pretty petite Mio felt bulky on my arm and "gapped".
I'm wondering about a women's F4 or F6...I may go to the sports store and see if I can try one on...sheesh.
My husband has an F11, and I'm wondering if the F4 has the feature that prevents it from interacting with other HR monitors...I'm pretty sure theF6 does...we only work out together once or twice a week, but still...
Honestly...being 5'4, I don't have the biggest wrists either. I just measured and mine came in at a whopping 6" on the nose, so fit is fine!
AS for interference, I'm looking at my manual and it says you need 3 feet of distance. So if you have some space...which I know is tough with P90X because you move around so much, then you'll be fine.
Also..if get one with a chest strap, my experience has been that it works better if you get it on there pretty snug...which makes total obvious sense. But I was wearing the other during plyo and was having a hard time keeping it consistent until I tightened it up a but. Still not a big distraction or anything!
I ordered an F6 - for only $20 more than an F4, we figured it would be worth it to not have to worry about staying 3 ft apart on those days that we work out together - LOL.
I checked one out at a local store (they had an F4 and I'm figuring the F6 women's is the same size - I hope!) and it looked alot smaller than the one I had.
I paid $4 extra for overnight shipping - should have it later today, I'm anxious to see how yoga tallies up with it tomorrow.
Thanks again.
