Advice anyone?

posted by Blitzracer on 12:18 am

Hi, I recently was looking into getting back into Cycling, I aim to get back to racing in the 2010 season, but I gotta kick the habbit of smoking. I've heard some things that are motivating about extinguishing the fire, but I also heard some demotivating studies about the condition of my lungs. Its been nearly 2 years since i started but I have always been active. I was in the military for a short while as well. The physical symptoms of quitting are in full force now. But its more the mental attachment to them which has made it hard not to slip up, which I slipped again tonight. Im excited to get back to racing, but sometimes I wonder if theres any chance at being as successful as I was a few years back. I keep returning to the cigs in a futile attempt to ease the stress of recent events in my life, I think its because they are the only thing that seems to stay the same amidst all the changes. But one way or another I want to get rid of the Habbit and try to recover from the damage done. Does anyone have some advice on staying motivated and maybe know just how much (ballpark maybe?) damage to my lungs has been done.

Listen up Blitz,
You will never hear anything that says if you quit your lungs will continue to be damaged. Don't worry about what is, stop what you will do. How do I know?
I'm a former two pack a day for 40 years smoker. Been quit for five years last Jan. 2. We have some 30' tall stairs at work that always winded me while a smoker. I kid you not that within two weeks I was going up those stairs two at a time. Plus I pack a few extra lbs. Which is how I found Livestrong last month,. I'm down 16lbs in that time. I walk as much as I can, I ride a bicycle weather permitting.
Quit. If I can do it you surely can. And the most important thing to remember for all ex-smokers, if you don't pick up the first one you can't smoke any.
