Tough to get back into running

posted by Elizabethr24 on 2:55 pm

Hi Everyone,
I'm 5'8" 147 lbs.  This is the most I've ever weighed in my life.  I used to run alot a couple of years ago, I picked up kickboxing but stopped because I realized my body loses more when I run.  Now its so tough to get back out there.  I've tried to get my friends out there with me but they are caught up in their own workout routines such as crossift and swimming.  Any pointers on how to get back into running after you've stopped for a while?
Thanks,
Elizabeth

Every time I get back on the horse and start working out!  I get sick!  Sinus cold turned to a really bad cold.... Lost my voice and everything!   But I am not giving up!  Ready to start again this weekend.

by mrspawloski on Mar 29, 2012 at 4:48 pm

Lizzy, the same thing happens to me!  I go strong for a week and then get sick.  I wonder sometimes if I do too much too soon.  Hope you feel better!

by lizzy62 on Mar 30, 2012 at 8:45 am

 Thanks mrspawloski!
Feeling better.... Meeting up with a good friend/neighbor who is so into being fit...... She volunteered to be my mentor!   She teaches spin on tuesdays, always doing some type of challenges.    She is excited because this will be her challenge to get me back into shape.... lol...     Day one will be this Sunday..

by rjcauley16 on Mar 30, 2012 at 6:08 pm

That is crazy.  Exact same thing happened to me.  I am really having a hard time since the marathon.  My 3 year old got really sick and then I followed.  My wife got put on bed rest and now I am running the household too.  I have my daughter's brithday party tomorrow morning and I start back fresh sunday. Wish me luck.

Good luck! and Happy 3rd birthday to your daughter!

by jennism on Apr 7, 2012 at 8:50 pm

I swear.  The same thing has happened to me SO MANY TIMES!!  Too many times, it knocked me off the routine so badly that I didn't get back on track.  Take it from me, and don't follow suit.  Get rest, get better, then get right back to it, even if you are at a little less than 100% (waiting to be 100% leaves too much room for excuses!)  I've read a few of your other posts, and it sounds like you are doing great :)

Knee Pain!

posted by ericamisamerica on 3:49 pm

My left knee hurts so bad when I run. I just got new shoes not too long ago because I thought maybe it was the shoes I've been running in for 7yrs(still hurts). The last time I ran I noticed I was running huntched over alittle bit. I tried to straighten up and it helped alittle. Could that be my problem? Am I just not running in good form? I love to run and don't want to have to give it up. What can I do to prevent my knee from hurting? I don't know if it'll be good for me to run through the pain much longer. I don't want to seriously injure myself.

posted by HawkingGal42 on 9:53 am

Let's be frank. I suck at running. I can't run. At all! Do you think some people just aren't meant to run? My legs have a lot of muscle, but they're short. I do yoga, but when it comes to running my breath support is horrible! I'm just at a loss.

by ericamisamerica on Mar 28, 2012 at 3:42 pm

It's hard for everyone at first. Once you start it'll get easier and easier!

by mrspawloski on Mar 28, 2012 at 4:24 pm

Hi, I suck at running too and it's hard, but it feels good when you stop!  It does get easier, just don't try to go too hard or long until it does or it won't be fun.

by snrinderle on Mar 29, 2012 at 9:52 am

I believe that if I can do it anyone can.   I also hated to run and pushed through.  I think that a kicker is that you have to WANT to.  It's not easy to do something that you hate!

by mcdanieljl on Mar 31, 2012 at 9:16 am

Hi Newbie,  I also suck at running. But I do it for the excersise. I started by doing a Couch to 5K program (iPhone app). It was a great gradual way to build up stamina. It took me 8 months before I could run 5k without walking. I can now run it in 30 minutes.  It took me longer to get there than the average Joe but it can be done. Even by those of us who don't have the knack for running.  You just have to decide if it is what you WANT to do - or if the results are worth it to you.  Good luck on your decision.

Hi I'm Tish aka iMoxy and I'm new to the group. This is really cool. I consider myself a running because I run, slow, but I run. I ran my first 5K in Jan and I actually crossed the finish line in less than 60 mins woohoo, actually it was 58 mins. I've been down and out for the last 8 weeks due to a knee injury, but I'm ready to get my shoes back on and start again. I'm planning to do an encore of c25k and once I complete that I will sign up for my second 5k. Anyway, I'm looking forward to being an active member in the group.

Happy Running!

I'm about to head out for 2.25 miler around our neighborhood now!
I think my goal this year is to sign up for a few races & see where they take me :D

Want to run but scared to take first step

posted by hollyholliday on 11:29 am

Ok--here we go. Most of my close freinds are runners and I'm not. I want what they have--peace, health, happiness in running. I've never liked running and as a kid was always one of the last two to finish and have a complex about being the loser runner. Yes that was 30 years ago---but it's there. When I want to, I can be atheltic but am presently in a low activity role.
I just got back from a week's vacation in DC where I walked up and down and all around all week. It felt good to be out and about. One of the friends that we stayed with is a marathon runner and just started a few years back. He has lost weight and gained so much by running. I want that.
It's just so hard to do it by myself and all my runner friends are doing miles and miles and marathons----How do I start---I need support and help. I look forward when I can run with someone.

by rjcauley16 on Mar 28, 2012 at 4:03 am

I hate to say it but there is not magic to it.  You just put on your shoes and hit the pavement.  I will say it is important to have goals to achieve or races to compete in order for you to have purpose.  This purpose will help you set a schedule.  The main thing though is to lace them up and hit the streets.

I highly recommend a Couch to 5k program to start. Google it or get the iPhone app.

by snrinderle on Mar 25, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Just remember....it's suppossed to be uncomfortable.  It wouldn't be considered training if you can just go out and do it.  I am currently marathon training and I had to remember this just yesterday during my long run.  I was so tired and had already had so many walk breaks that I was contimplating quitting...It's supposed to be hard.  Keep at it.  You said yourself that you always manage to keep up and you will...and remember that if you NEED to repeat a week you can, it's not against the rules just make sure you NEED to and not just think you need to or want an easy week....You will be ready by June...tell your brother to start making a sign for your race now! :)

by iMoxy on Mar 27, 2012 at 3:23 pm

Hey I started c25k  back in Dec. and never finished it before I went ahead of myself running my first 5K in Jan. 15 th YAY, something I really never imagine myself able to do because of my weight. I'm 270 and did it!  I'm planning to started c25k again as an Encore this time my personal goal is to finish the whole 8 week program before I sign up for my next 5K. I crossed the finished line the first and the next time I would love to finish at a decent time.
I am so excited for you too so don't allow fear to keep you from running your first 5K... You are going to be so proud of yourself once you cross the finish line.

New to running! A little advice?

posted by mbessler on 9:23 pm

I would love to get my body in shape and start running! Im  a 18 year old  5'8'' female and I weigh 188 pounds. I realize that  I am very overweight but im losing it! Im down 18 pounds! My goal is to run a marathon in the next three years for my best friend who needs a heart transplant. Is it possible for me to train in that amount of time? Thanks!

by rjcauley16 on Mar 23, 2012 at 4:52 pm

Just an opinion but if you want to run a marathon I would put december or next january as my goal.  Three years is a long time to train for one event.  You are capable of much more than you think.  I say pick a race and a training program and get after it.

Jogging at altitude

posted by pippawilde on 10:45 am

I grew up in Colorado and spent the first 20+ years of my life living at high altitude. I moved to SoCal about a decade ago, but come back to Colorado regularly-I'd say I spend 6-8 weeks a year in Colorado. I've never had any issues with the altitude change in terms of day to day life, going for long walks etc.
However, yesterday I tried jogging at altitude for the first time in my life (I couldn't jog to save my life as a kid) and OH.MY.GOSH. I typically jog for between 25-45 minutes, depending on the day. Yesterday, I barely made 12 minutes and my lungs were on FIRE! My muscles were fine, but I simply couldn't breathe. I really didn't expect that as I've been in town a week already.
I'll only have time for maybe one more attempt this trip, but since I come back regularly, I'd love any tips, suggestions etc for making the altitude jogging easier!
Thanks :)

help...

posted by clwhipple1980 on 6:05 am

I have never been much of a runner until last summer.  I started running on the treadmill and I was up to 3 miles a day (10 min miles), then I found out I was pregnant and I had complications so I couldn't run any more :-(   BUT... my baby boy was born on Jan. 8th and I want to start running again.  I am not able to go to a gym now, we moved and I live 35 minutes from a gym and it is not worth the gas money.  I ran / walked a mile and a half down our road the other day and I find that if I am running outside and not on a treadmill I can't seem to keep pace so I run faster then what I normally would but I can only run for a little bit then I have to walk for a bit and then run for a bit... you get the picture.  Any sugestions on how I can manage my pace better?

by rjcauley16 on Mar 22, 2012 at 9:30 am

I would suggest buying a garmin watch.  Almost all have setting on them that help control pace.  If you get to going to fast they beep like crazy until you get back to the pace you have set.
Rick

by new_runner on Mar 23, 2012 at 5:09 am

I had the same problem when I transitioned from the treadmill to the trail. I recommend actively running slow - make sure you aren't panting for breath at any time. You can calculate your pace by estimating the distance on googlemaps and time yourself with a regular watch. If after your run, you find that your pace was slower than 10 minutes, then speed up just a bit for your next run. It might feel like your just bouncing in place at first, but it took me maybe two or three runs to get used to running outside and to be able to guage my pace.
Good luck. :)

1/2 marathon!

posted by bbridget on 11:23 pm

I am training for my first half marathon and my runs are getting longer, does anyone have any suggestions for some good music to listen to while running? Nothing too hardcore though, I like classic rock, country, oldies, some hard rock and bands like Dave Mathews and Counting Crows :)

by rjcauley16 on Mar 22, 2012 at 5:08 am

I am a non-music guy while I run lately but I used to have very specific running lists.  Vampire Weekend is great for running.  I also like the fray and dont laugh but one song from lee dewyze--The Boxer, i prefer it to simon and garfunkle's version.  Anyway I would check out Vampire Weekend.  Oh yea, Kings of Leon are not bad either.

Godlover123 and I have been running together for a week now, and making pretty good progress.  I am going to do the 1/2 marathon in May (she is going to do the practice run with me) and then I told her  I would like to start training for the Chicago marathon next year (this one is closed).   I am surprisingly into this stuff. I never thought I would be.  I have always wanted to do this, but usuallly I talk myself out of it.  I couldn't do it without God and my daughter (and this group's support).

new to running

posted by jlangley on 5:45 am

Hi! I'm new to running. About 2 months ago, my friend challenged me to running 5k. I thought it would never happen, but I've been running a couple times a week and I've  been up to 5k for a few weeks now. it feels really good. But, now I don't know where to go from here.
running 5k is still pretty challenging to me, and it takes me between 30-45 minutes, depending on the day.
I've also been trying to lose weight, but this is where the real problem comes in. I've been tracking my cals and being really careful for weeks now, but very very little progress has been made.  What is up with that? :(

by rjcauley16 on Mar 20, 2012 at 5:50 am

I would suggest pushing the pace.  You know you can make the distance, so now just see how much faster you can do it.  You will also burn more calories.  You will be surprised at what you can do.   It is just a matter of making yourself uncomfortable for a few minutes.

Rick

by lizzy62 on Mar 20, 2012 at 8:24 am

Jlandley...  I am in the same boat as you,  I too have ran a 5K, but just barely making it.   Running only lasted a couple of months.   Losing the weight is hard for me.....   I am going to take Rick's advice and kick it up a notch.
I think I am going to love this group!   Love the support!..

by new_runner on Mar 20, 2012 at 8:35 am

Try incorporating some speed training to get faster. Resistance training should also improve your speed/endurance and help you lose inches. I can't see your food diary, so you might be eating too much, too little, or the "wrong" foods. Other than that, change takes time. Don't get discouraged. :)

by calalee on Mar 22, 2012 at 6:01 pm

Hi! I am new to this group and also to running.  I have 4 pounds to reach my goal weight (which is taking for-ever to lose), and my time for 5k is always 35 minutes. Great advice from rjcauley16! I will try to pick up the pace on my next run. Good luck everyone and let's keep each other posted on our progress. Happy running!
