Trail Running

posted by Luna325 on 7:04 am

I tried trail running for the first time yesterday. Normally I can run for about 25 min and be ok. But yesterday I could only do about half, my calfs were burning and I couldn't keep it up. Can anyone give me any insight on this? Is trail running normally a little more difficult than running on pavement or a track?

Having just finished a 31-mile trail race recently, I guess I can speak with some authority in saying that trail running is dramatically different from road running. Because of all the rocks, gravel, ruts, ditches, etc. your lower body has to make tiny adjustments with just about every footstep...a different world from running on smooth surfaces. So your calves and probably other muscles had a much rougher time than they were used to. But I wouldn't give up on trail running...your body will eventually get used to it and it will enhance your fitness level quicker than road running. It will also make road running seem a lot easier, which is obviously a good thing!

omigod mike I didn't realized that your ultra was on trails! That makes it even more impressive. My next run is a trail run at a 10K distance and I usually don't race those for speed at all. I jsut try and complete the course at a decent time without breaking an ankle. Usually there are many more hills and now that it's fall you never know what is under the leaves so you need to be somewhat cautious.
