Outside vs. Treadmill

posted by abbazgirl on 4:24 am

Hi all,
I'm a very beginning runner. Reading your posts shows me how "beginning" I am. It also gives me some goals.

I've been learning to run on a treadmill. Is there a difference between running on a treadmill vs. outside? Is it ok to go back and forth from one to another?
Thanks!
Meg

There is a big difference between running on the treadmill and running outside. I started on the treadmill with the Couch to 5K Program (aka: C25K). I now run outside mostly (preferably), with the occasional treadmill run when I can't get outside. It is perfectly okay to go back and forth, just keep in mind that it will feel different. Make sure you have good shoes when you make the switch - the road doesn't "give" like the treadmill does! If you haven't already, take the time to go to a specialty running store to make sure you have the right kind of shoes. You don't necessarily have to buy from them (they can be pricey), but you should at least know what type of running shoe to buy. It definitely makes all the difference!! Good luck!!

I think mixing it up is the way to go, even after you reach your running goals times etc...  It helps alot for me to switch things up.

I have really been enjoying running this year (outside) - I'm afraid with the weather getting colder, rain, dark too early, etc...
I might have to try the treadmill.... I'm a bit worried about it sucking the motavation right out of me.  I tried some treadmill work last winter & couldn't stick with it.
I would encourage you to run outside when possible - find some nice trails close by - it works your legs in a different way & I find being outside is at least 50% of the fun for me.

Thanks for the info! I did go to a running store and was fitted for shoes. After a couple of months I realized that they didn't fit well, much to my surprise. I tried another shop and found a wonderful pair. What a difference!

I like the treadmill at the gym. However, I'd love to spend time outside and was hoping that running would encourage that. I'm glad to hear that running in both venues are ok, just different.
Thanks!

There's an article on the LS main page on treadmill vs. outside running. No earth-shattering news, but worth the read if you're new. I thought of you when I read it. :)

There is a difference in running surface, but the biggest difference is in the scenery for me.  Fall is my absolute favorite time of year to run.  Crisp leaves, the smell of wood burning stoves....ahhh....looking forward to 9 miles this Saturday!

When I started running 2 years ago it was on the dreadmill.  I moved outside about 3 months after that and haven't looked back.  There's so much more to see outside than in the gym so I recommend getting out there.

The only time a treadmill comes into play for me is during a hurricane, tornado, lightning and freezing rain.  Welcome to running.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
