Are you a runner or would you like to start running? This is a group where experienced runners and beginners can share their successes and experiences. Anyone can post at any time!
I'm new to this group and from reading the posts it looks as though you guys are in line
with where I'm at and my goals. I'm currently training for the Austin Marathon in
February.
I first started running back in May and have progressed from running a quarter mile about
to pass out (at 270 lbs) to running 14 miles last night in pain (at 204 lbs). I had a
question for the group as somebody may know the answer.
At about mile 3 I had the urge of needing to pee but was on a main public street with no
restrooms. When I got to mile 6 I found a location but could barely get anything out and
it burned. This continued through the rest of the run. But I hydrated well before bed and
took electrolytes as well. This morning everything was back to normal. Was it dehydration?
Was it electrolytes? Both? Any input would be appreciated.
I'm just down the highway in Austin. I could hardly call it "training" though. I like to run, but marathons seem a little too masochistic for my taste. :-)
I had a urinary tract infection once and that's exactly what the symptoms were - overwhelming urge to pee, hardly anything came out at all and intense burning - cured very quickly with antibiotics but I never experienced anything like it in association with running. Maybe give your doctor a call?
Hey RH, welcome...don't know how old you are, you don't look that old. Your doctor is the best person to answer that question, but there are some things that could cause that type of reaction. An enlarged prostate will not only invoke the urge, but at the same time will block the flow of urine. The other thing is bladder spasms due to dehydration. I know you said you hydrated well, so that might rule that out too. Another scenario might be that you experienced a slight vaso-vagal reaction wherein the vagus nerve which supplies sensation to motor and secretory impulses in the abdomen is stimulated to spasm, giving you the "urge" to go. Either way, if this is a repeated sensation, the best advice is to ask your physician. Hope this helps, and welcome!
Much Love,
-Armand.
NOT TO BE CONSTRUED AS MEDICAL ADVICE.
The hydration was after the fact and I haven't had any problems since or before. My abs were unusually sore while I was running yesterday so maybe it was the spasming thing. I'll hydrate better next time around and see if that helps.
PS It was the first time I've done a long run at night instead of morning so i may have messed up my bios.
