A group for ANY type of tri-athlete- Amateur, Professional, Sprint, Olympic, Ironman... if you are even thinking triathlon, come on in!
Hi All,
I am so thrilled and thought that you guys would understand this best. I live in NYC and
near the Astoria pool (held time trials for the Olympics, HUGE and absolutely incredible
views of the Triborough & Hell's Gate bridges.) I can bike there in 20 minutes and
from 7-8:30 am or pm adult lap swimming is free.
I recently was laid off from my job and started bartending to make rent... (I'm also an
actor, typical.) So I haven't been able to race as much as I would have liked to this
summer as race fees just weren't in my budget. (Though I was able to spring for a 1/2
marathon bc it wasn't too pricey and I want to push myself to run longer and faster for
when I do the Wildflower 1/2 Ironman next year.) Plus, if you swim 25 miles from July
4th- Labor Day you get a tee shirt. So, seeing as I wasn't really Tri-training anymore, I
figured it would be a good way to get out of bed and work for something each
week.
Well... this morning, I DID IT!! 25 miles with another .25 to spare!! I aimed for about 50
laps each swim (I couldn't make every day with bartending shifts going late and acting
gigs with early call times, but I made sure to go at least 2x each week since I found out
about it.) and hit at least 32 laps (1 mile) each day. My technique is so much
improved and I can swim a lot smarter now that I ever could. I am more confident in my
swims and will (hopefully!) spend less time breastroking the anxiety out and losing
precious time to fears of drowning/getting kicked/losing my goggles, etc, to actually
swimming!!
I am so greatful to have had this experience to whip my upper body into shape and push
myself despite a thin race calendar. I will head to the indoor NYC pools grudgingly but if
I come up with a goal in mind I know it will be more challenging and fun. Goals, they
always work to push you harder!!
Thanks for everyone's support. What a great outlet!
Well done! Swimming is my weak link and I just got laid off too. So I am heading to the sea every other day to get a swim in. I hope it works for me as it has done for you.
good for you! great accomplishment :)
you made me curious, though, so i checked my training log - since jan. 25th (when i started swim training for tri), i'm astonished to discover i've put in 59.25 miles! that includes both pool and OWS, though.
always good to have a plan before you head to the pool - having a structured workout to do will make you push yourself harder! :)
