Hi everyone...not only am I a working Mom but I am also divorced.....no family real close either.   I work out most days, run or pilates but still need to work on portions and better choices..  Anyways, I quit smoking almost four years ago and lost weight instead of gaining but still need to lose that last twenty.  I am trying to be the best role model I can......it is about lifestyle changes, not diet.

After reading the blogs I decided this just may be the group for me!  I have trouble making good food choices ALL the time.  I am surrounded by skinny people that don't have any food issues!  I even had the lap band "installed" back in December of 07' but because of my inability to make good choices I have not lost the weight I should have.  And not to sound like another excuse, but I have no support.  My thin husbands thinks I should just eat salad and I should be fine!  I NEED SUPPORT!  And I am yet to find anyone in my area looking for an excercise/food shopping buddy!  SO I will follow this group and try my best this time!  I look forward to joining the losers bench~

So I made it through my first weekend and didn't go off the rails! Yeah!  Weekends are a hard time for me because I"m around the kids and kid food all day, but this weekend I managed to eat well (thinking about having to post what I ate was motivating) and I even got on the treadmill this morning.  Stick with it everyone and have a great week!

New one trying to stick with it

posted by same30pounds on 10:31 am

Hi all:  I've been trying to loose the same 30 pounds since I had my first son almost 8 years ago.  Was pretty good between pregnancy 1 and 2 with exercising (had a personal trainer and everything) but with the second we moved to the 'burbs and trainer was left by the wayside.  I tried all sort of other diets, South Beach, pills, etc. but I think I realize that doing it the "old fashioned" way of tracking what goes in the tank and how much exercise I get will be the way I can get the weight off and hopefully keep it off.  Have many same challenges as other posters here; very demanding job (actually I am running a team meeting this week and will have to be really careful around all the snacks and extra food) but I hope this site and group will keep me motivated, and maybe I can motivate someone else too.

I have to admit I have tried other diet sites and I stick with them for a while, then I get busy and fall 'off the wagon' and have a hard time getting back on the wagon... I work 45 hours per week, go to school and my hubby and I run a bed and breakfast....(which can be a problem with eating rich foods on the weekends)  I'm here and hauling myself back on the wagon...the good news is while I was off the wagon this time I didn't gain....

Wanna join this Group! :)

posted by torrance86 on 12:12 pm

I just came across this group and think it's totally for me! I've only read through the past week's blogs but I have some of the same issues. I can't seem to get my husband on board with eating healthy (or exercising). I too will eat Lean Cuisines dinners and fix him & my son (14) a full supper. I swear I could lose weight if I didn't have to come home and fix them supper. Although tracking my food on TDP has REALLY helped me realize where my calories are coming from. I think twice before eating something - that's a start. We used to be a fairly active family but the last year or two the activity level has decreased about half due to our work loads. Any advice on how to stay active in a fun way (otherwise it gets boring)? I HAVE to have variety.  It's getting cold here in NW Missouri and I hate being cold so no outside activities. A few months ago my husband wanted a treadmill so we bought one - i've seen him on it maybe 2-3 times.  My goeal was to workout 3x's week but LIFE seems to get in the way. If I can't do it immediately after work then it doesn't happen. There is always something else to do or go to. If I have to go somewhere that night I don't workout because I sweat so much when I workout that I would have to shower and get ready all over again...too much trouble or not enough time. I know these are all excuses but I'm not sure what else to do. I'm not a morning person, I hate getting out of bed. Any suggestions?

Hi- I just joined the group and hope i can keep up with all of you guys.  (i'm on the computer all day so coming home and going on the computer is usually the last thing i want to do) anyways.  My Story:  Never have been thin my whole life..just medium, large.  I have a 2 year old son and gained about 40 lbs with pregnancy.  (after i had him i was at 200 lbs) now 2 years later i'm sick of looking like this.  I've lost about 25-30 lbs since January but am stuck at 170ish.
I'm trying so hard now to just break this plateau and get back to *at least* my prepreggy weight 160 and hopefully go from there.  Even though I'm 5'5" I'll never be a 115125 lb girl but would be extremely happy at 135.  I hope this blog will motivate us ALL and when we're feeling down get us motivated to see we're not the only one out there with these feelings and hardships!!! -Taryn

Get out of my own way.

posted by Nickelle on 7:30 pm

On September 28th, after doing some soul searching I decided to start exercising on a regular basis.  I started taking group personal training sessions that would require I wake up at 4:30 am daily.  This was a big step for me, but honestly I knew I had to do something.  I have successfully completed 6 one hour, 4 this week alone.  It has been challenging, because when I return home I must get the kids ready for school, and go to work.  The downside is I am very tired at the end of a workout day.  The upside is I am usually too tired for late night eating or snacking.  I feel very proud of myself, and feel like I need to do this for myself.  The next thing I need to work on is my diet.  Once I get the diet and exercise working together there is no stopping me.  I see myself  thinner, now I just have to make it happen.

posted by YoliMac on 10:41 am

Hi everyone!
I am brand new.. just started tracking yesterday. I have a beautiful 2 yr old daughter and a husband who gains no weight no matter how much he eats! I can look at something and gain 20 lbs. I weigh over 200 lbs (ugh.. at least  225) and am looking to get down to 135 lbs in a year but hopefully at/under 200 by New Years. It is SOOOO hard to get into working out when I am gone from 7am-6pm (9hrs work plus almost an hour commute each way...gotta love LA traffic!) so I dont get to spend time with my family. Trying to get motivated to wake up an hour earlier to get a workout in, but im just exhausted in the am. But I am really gonna try and hopefully tracking here will keep me going.

Hi YoliMac!
We have a lot in common in terms of our daily schedule and family demands.  As much as I still HATE it, 4:45 am is when I have to get up to get a full hour's workout in before I get everyone in my household out and about for the day.
What I've found is that it's the physical "getting up" out my bed that's the hardest part.  Once my feet actually hit the ground...it's all a blur.  :)
I encourage you to start by just practicing waking up that early.  Even if you just get up and straighten up the house or take out the garbage or some other small task like reading.  Perhaps commit to doing that for a week.
Once you've gotten that down...start doing a few minutes of exercise instead.
Hope that helps!
Lanie

I'm not an expert and dont claim to be, but your goals seem VERY agressive....I know when I make agressive goals like that I don't (and physcially CANNOT) make them and feel like a failure.  Good Luck--i know you'll need it (along with patience, hardwork, endurance, and innerstrength). -Taryn

Hello. I'm new and have been tracking for 2-3 weeks. So far I've lost 7.5 pounds and hope to lose 8 more by the end of the month. I work out of my home which you might think makes it easier for me but I seem to be surrounded by food all the time. All I have to do is go into the kitchen and all of my favorites are there, even if they are nutritious. I put in 11 hour days and have to squeeze in the exercise whenever I can. It may seem silly, but I have been using my Wii Active to do some of my exercising. So far, it seems to be working.

Healthy Eating

posted by jvellucci on 7:26 am

Ok, I have been eating pretty well for a while now, but my husband always made me seperate meals, I would have a salad and chicken breast and they would have chicken parmesian.  I would eat whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread and they would eat regular pasta and white bread.  This is crazy, why would I treat myself better then I treat my kids?  My husband is taking a class in college about nutrition and would come home each night with a new fact (things I have been saying for years), by the way, he does the cooking and ate what the kids ate.  He recently failed to get a new life insurance policy due to his cholesterol.  This changed everything, he started eating what I was eating, but we kept feeding the kids seperate.  Then we were at the grocery store, doing the weekly shopping and it dawned on us what we were doing.  Please keep in mind all of my children are active and at a healthy weight, but what were we teaching them about eating?  We were buying, pizza rolls, hungry man dinners, and all sorts of quick frozen meals, full of MSG and salt.  We came home this trip with fruit, vegis, yogurt, low salt sandwich meat, with wheat bread and low fat popcorn for a snack.  This went over like a fart in church.  They are revolting, but since there is nothing else to eat, what choice is there?  I will keep you informed about how this transition goes, we did this cold turkey, but we believe that we were doing them a huge dis-service by buying all this unhealthy food and promoting unhealthy habits, we even changed what our animals eat.   If anyone has any tips about kids eathing healthy, I would love to hear them.  My kids do eat vegis, and fruits and have enjoyed the healthy dinners that we have prepared, but snacks and quick after school snacks were where they were eating the frozen food, that we no longer provide; now they only have healthy choices, I am hoping that it only takes a short time for them to transition to this healthy way of eating.
Have a great day and achieve today!

My kids and I love to snack on vegis with PB or hummus.  We also love nuts and dried fruit, sometimes with a little chocolate.  I mix together my own trail mix from the bulk food section.  We get the junk food about twice a month.  I buy them each one box/bag of their favorite.  If they are set on pizza try english muffin mini pizzas, just keep your favorite pasta sauce and whole wheat english muffins around and they can make their own healthy pizzas with topings you have chopped up in the fridge.  Get creative.  Good luck Jenifer.

by melaniesaragusa on September 30th 2009 at 5:38 pm

That sounds just like my story, but I haven't gotten the whole family on the bandwagon just yet.  I eat my Lean Cusines and cook real food for them.  It would be cheaper and healthier if I just cooked healthy  foods for all of us.

by tarynkaye on October 11th 2009 at 1:46 pm

I'm having a hard time with that too...my husband will pretty much eat the light foods (turkey meat/2% cheese instaed of regular) but the amount he eats is so much...I know since he's male he can eat more...but I just wish he'd reign things it a bit more.  i also dont know what to do my for 2 year old...right now we feed him different things than we eat...is that wrong?  but a 2 year old doesn't need to be eating diet foods either....

I say good for you sister!!  You guys are going to be hot together :)  It's always nice to have the encouragement.  My husband and I are trying to get in shape, he looks incredible and has lost nearly 100 lbs since December, I'm incredibly proud of him... however I've only lost 20 lbs since December, I feel better than I did and I'm proud, but it's hard when I'm with my incredible husband 'cause his loss is so drastic, it's hard to even see that I've lost anything :)
So to you, I say YOU CAN DO IT!!

Back to Hot Stuff!!!

Okay.   I recently got married and forgot how easily it is to gain weight when you are having fun.   I went from a size four to an eight in a month an a half.  I feel like all i have to do is breath the wrong way and the weight comes on and stays on.  I can't stand how my clothes fit and i will not go out and buy any more, to me that would be like saying is okay to gain weight.  My new husband loves to cook and is a great cook but because we both work all day we ended up eating  late at night, something i know it can't be good for us.   I have always known how to control my weight and stay in shape but after reaching 40 it seems to be so much harder to lose the weight.  I work all day, come home and instead of going out and walking i sit on the couch, watch tv, take a nap and then help the kids with their homework.  I have become so lazy!!! I hate that about myself.  I will like for someone to help me get started again.  I know once i start and clothes fit right i will continue to do it.  I want so bad to just be able to wear my clothes and know i don't have to unbottom the pants in order to sit down, and be able to wear my pretty blouses knowing i don't have to wear a tank top under it so it won't look like i can't buttom the blouse.  We are in the process of moving from his house into another one so i'm not sure how i can start a routine and keep at it once we move.  Please help!!!

Tammy, I feel your pain.  My husband of  6 years loves to cook too and we find that cooking is our together time, but I gained about 8 pounds and couldin't fit into my clothes either.  One day you look up and there is a pile of spaghetti attached to your butt!  I have done two things, one, we have changed our eating habits, we still cook together, but we cook healthy, low fat food that tastes great.  It is like a game to see who can find the best receipes that combine great taste with low calories.  The second thing is to carve out time for YOU!  My time is from 4:30am to 5:30am, I know who the he** wants to get up that early, but I have been doing it for two years now and love having that one hour before my husband and four kids get up, even my animals are still asleep.  You get your workout out of the way and you have no excuses that allow you to put it off.  One tip, I moved my alarm clock across the room, so that I have to get up to turn it off!  Keep us posted I would love to know how you are doing! Hello lovely mammas!  I have a question does anyone have a suggestion for a low impact workout that is easy on the knees?  Recently my knees and ankels have been giving out on me.  I walk each day for 60 minutes and also do the Jillian Micheals workouts.  Both workouts require alot of leg work.  Especially the Micheals workout that has alot of jumping and squating.  I am looking to do something that won't impact my joints that much.  Please post a few suggestions if you have any.

Snacking out of boredom.

posted by HeatherW47 on 7:58 am

Hi.  I work full time and I'm really good now at controlling what I eat, but I've noticed that I will snack out of boredom.  When I'm at work, I get bored and I start thinking of food.  I have ONLY healthy snacks at my desk and I have no problem passing on food that is brought in by others, but I don't want to even eat the healthy snacks if it's just from boredom and I'm not REALLY hungry.  I've started chewing gum to prevent myself from snacking out of boredom, but does anyone else have any other tips or suggestions?

by mamamia0907 on August 26th 2009 at 2:31 pm

I have the same problem, but I read this article today that suggests leaving a reminder nearby that you are on a diet. Like a Shape Magazine lying on your desk. I'm searching and searching for this article because it was really good and now that I need it again, I lost it!
Well gave up on finding it. Another idea is to find a coworker who is dieting too. My boss is actually dieting with me and its SOO much easier to turn down treats when I can say, "I appreciate the offer, but Frank and I are dieting and we're saving our calories for lunch".

by regina56 on August 26th 2009 at 6:38 pm

This is a very difficult problem to conquer.  I think that everyone has this problem especially if your sitting at a desk or in a work environment where people love to bring in snacks.  Mamamia's idea about a reminder is excellent.  Keep a picture on your desk of yourself at your best weight or wear a ribbon around your wrist.  Another idea, if you want something more subtle that not everyone at your job will see, try writing down a promise to yourself on a piece of paper, whip it out everytime that you feel the urge to eat out of boredom.  It will help to remind you of goals.

ps. I also read somewhere that it takes 30 days to break a habit. So if you consider this a habit  try to not snack out of boredom for 30 consecutive days and after that you won't have to worry about it anymore. That might be a great motivational challenge for all of us late night snackers. :)

I have a sign in my office.."That bite won't taste as good as thin feels!"  I actually have it taped to my mini-fridge in my office, because I found that I was doing the same thing.  Also, if you track your food, the guilt eats you up more then if you aren't actually seeing the calories on paper (computer screen)  I keep my food log open all day and list everything that I put into my mouth, this helps so much.

by tarynkaye on October 11th 2009 at 1:50 pm

I work in an office too and have the same problem.  one thing I do is drink a bottle of water everytime i get that urge (ususally hunger feelings are actually thirst feelings).  If i drink it, wait 15 min and am still wanting to snack I let myself...i tell myself I have to track it though...if i dont think its worth it I wont eat it.

Don't get discouraged!!  Men lose weight alot faster and easier than women.  We are naturally suppose to have more fat on our bodies than men, so don't compare your weight loss to his.  Also forget about what other people say or who they compliment.  Remember this is your journey, your success and you are doing this for YOURSELF!  Believe me you'll get to where you want to be and everyone will be in awe of your new look.  But even when they are asking you for fitness tips in the future, remember that all your hard work is not for their admiration, but for you to have the ability to live a helathy and more energetic life.  Good luck and great job losing that 20 lbs.  Go girl!!!

by tarynkaye on October 11th 2009 at 1:52 pm

also, i've found that people have a hard time commenting that a woman has lost weight...they think if you say something you'll think that they've notice how FAT you were before....  But i agree..that is no fun watching somebody else get all the glory when you've put all the work into it as well.

I did it!!

My husband and I completed our first 10K this weekend!!  It was a trail run at our local ski resort, it was a REALLY tough course and I pretty much pulled up the rear ( I really should have trained harder) but I finished!!  My poor legs feel like tree trunks, but I'm so glad we did it.  My husband was a wonderful motivator and really helped me keep going.  I'm glad we did it, but I told him I think we should do some 5K's on flat ground before we try that treacherous course again.  I'm going to try a class at the gym with a friend from work tonight.
I'm feeling a bit discouraged... I've been trying really hard to stick to a 1200 calorie diet and get into the gym at least 4 times a week, seeing some results muscle wise, but pretty much staying the same on the scale :(  Any suggestions?

Mix it up with your workouts. Maybe instead of the treadmill or bike, try swimming. Swimming is WONDERFUL. Taking a dance class is a great method because it helps with rhythm and flexibility while burning calories. Step up your weight training because muscles burn more calories. Grab a friend and make her work out with you. Competition really motivates me to stay on the treadmill five minutes longer than my friend could, swim just one extra lap, or lift weights heavier than usual, etc.

by larapriscila on August 20th 2009 at 6:49 pm

Congrats in your 10K...
I was in the same boat that you  are until I started to listen to a podcast called Fat 2 Fit Radio (iTunes). I learned about BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) and that we should not eat under it because our bodies start to slow down and we stop loosing.... like starvation mode. I was amazed by how much food I should be eating and carefully I tried it... I am loosing weight very smoothly. It is a total lifestyle change that we can keep for the rest of our lives.
You would not believe how much pain I endured just to find out it was doing the worst for me. I need to eat a minimum of 1650 cal per day now to loose weight and it also give you how much calories you should eat to maintain your weight (not for me right now), but it would be around 2500 cal due to my activity level, and if you might ask... I am 192 lbs right now. It is really incredible how much I learned with these guys. It all make sense now, as I always asked why my metabolism was so slow. I am running in full speed now and loving it.
Another great podcast is Inside Out Weightloss. It is all about the mind, and it really changed my life entirely, not only weight wise.
Check it out and good luck.

Hello!!

posted by regina56 on 6:29 pm

Hello to all the working mommas out there.  I have recently become a new mom and while I am enjoying my son I am not enjoying the weight that I put on.  I gained about 50lbs and many bad habits.  I spent my entire pregnancy eating anything and everything and now I am finding it hard to break that habit.  I am a short girl, so if I even put on a little bit of weight it is OBVIOUS!! After reading some of the posts I thought that this group seemed to be a great fit and I loved reading all of your posts.  I am looking for some inspiration and guidance, that I can't get with my "another order of cheese fries" friends and family. (Don't we all love those who pair their vists with us with a side of something fried :)
Currently I am 121 lbs, but prepregnancy was 115.  I have lost alot of my baby weight but now find myself creeping back up the scale.  Three weeks ago I was 113, so I "treated" myself and now I am 121.  This is nothing too new for me. For the past four months I go down dramatically then go back up.  I am really scared that my pregnancy habits are going to cause me to gain back the 40lbs I lost.  Also I feel discouraged because even when I was 115 my body still didn't look the exact same way it look before I was pregnant.  So I am at the point of who cares, might as well eat and be happy.  So I eat gain weight, get upset lose the weight, get happy, remember my pre pregnancy body then "treat" myself.  I am in a really bad cycle that I need to break.  I hope to do that here.

I battled back and forth like that too for quite a while after I had our third baby.  It's really hard!!  I've found that setting a goal by having something to work for has REALLY helped me push myself.  Are there any charity walks near you soon (ex:  March of Dimes, Heart Association, etc.)?  Maybe you get to take a vacation or something fun??

by mamamia0907 on August 18th 2009 at 11:09 am

I understand that cycle for sure. It took me a long time to get motivated but what eventually got me going was that I want to be a good example for my son for eating and exercising habits. I also noticed that when I eat less junk I have more energy. One of my past excuses for not exercising was that my son made me tired all the time. However, eating right and exercising really does give me more energy that in turn helps me keep up with the little guy and my household chores, work, etc.
I am still struggling with it and hopefully you and I and the rest of this group can keep each other in line.

Thanks for your support!  It feels great to know that other people have struggled the way I am.  I also like the idea of the March of Dimes walk.  I can't run a serious maraton or do a 10 k walk like Vigil99 (Go GIrl!!), but a 5k walk with a friend or my husband sounds like great motivation. But in the end Mamamia0907 is right I have to remember that now my eating is going to serve as an example to my son. Eventhough he is still young I should battle my eating now, so he won't see me struggle when he is older.  I really want him to get the message that we eat to live and not live to eat.

Just one more thing to add to all the great advice.  Depending on how recently you had your baby, your body won't pop right back into shape.  It usually takes that 18 month period after the baby is born to have your body back to being yours again.  The necessary fat to sustain the pregnancy wants to stay with you that long, especially if you are breastfeeding.  I am experienced with this one, I've had 5.  :)

by HeatherW47 on August 26th 2009 at 8:03 am

Good advice from all!  My body NEVER "popped" right back into shape and my son is going to be 4 on Monday.  I've had to work VERY hard at getting into shape, but even though I was very thin when I got pregnant, I wasn't at a healthy weight, so my body wasn't used to being in shape prior to pregnancy.  Personally, weighing 121 would be a dream come true!   However, I'm 5'5" and I know you said you're short.  As yummy1 said, yeah, it takes time.  Don't get discouraged.  I've learned that if I don't think about it too hard, I lose weight and gain muscle much faster than if I stress about it.  I just eat healthy and exercise and try not to dwell on it.

I have had this problem before, so on the way to work from school I would eat carrot sticks, raw green beans, nutrigrain bars, etc...basically finger foods that I could  eat while driving.
Maybe you could drink a Slimfast or other canned meal replacement that still has calories but also offers convenience and still some nutrients as well. You could even pour it into a colored waterbottle so at work the guests won't know any better.
I'm not a nutritionist or anything but it might work?

new here

posted by mguyton81 on 7:01 pm

Hi, I'm Michelle and I just joined livestrong.com. I joined because I can track my calories on my blackberry.  If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't be able to keep track very well.
My life is very busy.  While you would think it keeps me active, it doesn't seem to do enough.  I haven't lost (or gained) any weight in 3 years. I have started eating a lot better, but exercise is what gets me.  I just can't seem to work it into my schedule.  It's hard for me to stay focused and/or motivated if I don't see results, so I am hoping I see something soon!!!

by mamamia0907 on August 6th 2009 at 7:05 pm

wow, that's great that you haven't gained any weight in THREE years! I bet with some more focus and encouragement you will meet your goal.

by cborrecco on August 7th 2009 at 9:01 am

I wish that was my problem, only if I was at my ideal weight ofcourse. :)   Welcome to the group. We are happy you are here!

by HeatherW47 on August 26th 2009 at 8:06 am

Consistency is key.  Even if you only walk 3 mph on the treadmill for 20 minutes a day, the fact that you're doing it every day will have better results than trying to cram a SUPER workout into 1 day a week.  I had the same problem.  I thought I was too busy for exercise, but once I forced myself to MAKE time it started becoming part of my routine and now I am addicted to it in a positive way.  It's just hard to get going, but if you can be disciplined enough in the beginning, your body will get used to it and so will your schedule!

posted by mamamia0907 on 3:37 pm

Hi,
Just joined the group. My name is Maria, but some people call me Mia (don't care either way). I am a college student and part-time insurance rep. I have a (almost) two-year-old son. I don't live with his dad because until recently we were separated, so I often have to run back and forth between his place and mine (another crazy aspect to my schedule).
I joined this group because I haven't lost all my pregnancy weight yet! I love to work out  but unless I get in the habit of doing it, I often let my fatigue get the best of me. That and my annoying non-mommy college friends with better non-mommy metabolisms love munchies : ) Gotta love peer influence. That's why I joined this group. I think reading about you guys overcoming your busy schedules to find time to work out will help me get motivated!
I started working out on a Wii Fit. I looove it!

Hi!  I'm new to the group :)  I'm looking forward to having some support in my weight loss/ getting healthy journey.  It's comforting to know there are other working mom's that struggle with this.  I have three kids and a great husband, work for a great company with lots of skinny girls :)  My husband and I have started working out and eating right about a month ago and next weekend we're going to do our first 10K!!  I'm scared to death, but really happy we're doing it together.

Welcome! I am so excited that you are here. That is Awesome that you and your husband are running a 10K together. Good Luck you should do great. Don't be scared.

by mamamia0907 on August 7th 2009 at 11:26 am

Running gives me a great after-workout high. I have never run that much before, but I bet you get a great rush from all that running! Good luck!

by Vigil99 on August 10th 2009 at 2:53 pm

Thanks for the motivation guys, I seem to get more scared as we approach the big day.  The run is Sunday and I'm looking forward to it, but scared at the same time if that makes any sense.  I've been having nightmares about it even!!
Any advice on preparation?  I've been running in the gym with my husband, but I'm really new at all of this, so I haven't hit the point yet where I get the "runners high".

what a day

posted by pamandtim on 4:04 pm

today was a really messed up day..got up for work and did not have to work today. so that means i did not get a walk in this morning. we are going to the lake tonight and we will put in our walk..yesterday we went to the lake and my husband who is my partner in this diet walked it 3 times. i did it once because i walked all day at my job. i work at Hershey Park in the traffic area and that is alot of walking and moving my hands and arms. i love that because that is my exercise if it rains and i cannot get a work in. i actually used my treadmill today and that was also great so that made up for the fact that i did not walk at work.
Today was known as our cheat day..i did not cheat that bad. we went for chinese and i did not over eat but when i came home and seen the calories i almost freaked out..i did not realize that there is alot in that kinda of food, because all of them people are  skinny...ha ha
well  time for the lake going to push the stroller with my new grandson who is going to be 4 months tommorow....happy birthday cole thomas

thanks for all the help
i am now at 20lbs lost

Congrats on the 20lbs lost forever. I too love Chinese food. I find making up my own dishes with my own ingredients have saved me on the Cals. Try a stir fry of your own and see where it takes you!.  :)

by hullbee on August 1st 2009 at 6:46 am

good job on the 20 lbs!  i'm headed that way.... ever so slowly...

cooking your own chinese is way more healthy (way more work too, of course...  ). i work with a lot of chinese people and they don't eat the food that chinese restaurants serve! at least not every day. most of it is considered 'special occasion' food to them -- sort of like eating christmas ham, cranberry sauce, turkey w/stuffing, pies and birthday cake is to us.  you can always ask to have sauces on the side and avoid the deep fried stuff (i'm thinking of sweet and sour chicken - oh, and egg rolls too) when you go out though. that way you can still have it, but without racking up the calories -- although it does sound like you worked some of it off anyway!   happy birthday to your grandson! i bet he's adorable!

Arrgh! Stupid Work Parties!

posted by hullbee on 5:39 pm

I've been doing so well. I've lost 5 pounds. I'm resisting things left and right and then BAM!  2 work parties today - mango pie and one and BEN AND JERRY'S ICE CREAM CAKE at the other! NO FAIR!  At least I only had very small pieces.

But how come nobody can have an office party with fresh fruit and veg?  Why always cake?

OK, I think I'm done ranting... thanks for listening.

Aawwww...don't be so hard on yourself hullbee...5 pounds is fantastic and your probably could've used a little treat.
I personally think our office parties should be banned!!!  They often do these potluck things where everyone brings something smothered in either cheese or chocolate!!!  I think for those of us with who crack under the willpower pressure, we should get a personal day off with pay
I worked out tonight and have stayed within my calorie limit for 4 days straight!  I'm worried about this long weekend though...

by hullbee on August 1st 2009 at 6:37 am

lol! YES to the personal day off with pay! an excellent idea!
good luck over the weekend. why is it long for you? school starts next week here, so we've got to do some last minutes shopping for shoes (i hate shopping unless it's for books, yarn, or fabric... shoes sometimes, but only if they're for ME!)

Just Hello

posted by LisaRae1028 on 2:33 pm

Sadly I missed my workout yesterday morning, but I ended up getting up bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning...which was odd.  I couldn't get to sleep last night until after midnight and I was able to get up at 5:30 with no problem.  After not having worked out for a little while, I sure felt it!  I did a Reebok step video that I got years ago...it's one of my faves.   I can't believe how many calories this tracker says I burned....yee haw!
So has anyone heard of the 30 Day Shred?  I was reading some women who tried it on another blog...  I looked it up online and it's the trainer from the Biggest Loser that does it.  I've bought one of those videos before (the cardio max one I think) and I found it really distracting since nobody was in sync and the instructure mostly walked around from person to person the whole time.
What are everyone's thoughts on Pilates vs. Cardio?  Can anyone recommend a REALLY good workout video that they have been successful with?

Awesome job getting up! good for you!! :)  I did not work out today, because I really felt like I needed a rest day (plus i have this weirdly strained muscle in my foreram -- who strains a forearm??!?)

Haven't heard of the 30 Day Shred and don't really use videos, so i have no advice there.  I can say i didn't much like the one Pilates class i went to because there wasn't enough moving around, just all this stuff on the mat. I suppose that's why I like Zumba so much. :)

Yes, I do try really hard to at least do a 20 to 30 mint. video once a week, after I get home from work. But as we all know, I am Exhuasted once I enter the house after working 8 hours, blagh . So this is why I usually only do that once a week and then 2 to 3 days I will do 1 hour os spinning at my gym!
I have been keeping track of my calorie Intake now for over 5 months, I have not really seen any weight drop, this makes me feel discouraged, but needless to say, I keep worikng out and attempting to track my calorie intake daily. I am not giving up, That is NOT an option.

I am a 32 year old mother to one duahgter who is 7 years old. I remember when I was 20- I was able to whip this extra weight easy, but now not even that far into my 30's, man i am having one heck of a time just to get 10 pounds off. I do try really hard to get at least 2 to 3 times a week of 1 hour cardio, usually spinning class in my week, but I too find myself struggling to mangage the little extra time I get around my school,  home, family, and work.
A lot of times when I don't have time to go to the gym, I will do 20 or 30 minute videos in  my living room after I  put my daughter to sleep, then this way I don't feel so guilty and I know at least i tried to sqweeze something of an excercise in my daily routine.

But I am glad to know I am not the only one in thsi boat, for a minute there I thought I was alone.  Good Luck Ladies!

Welcome!  You are absolutely not alone!  The fact that you are able to get to the 20 or 30 minute videos is a great sign!  And doing that after your daughter goes to sleep is a lot better than sitting on the couch noching!!! ;)  I find even a little bit of exercise will keep me motivated enough to stay away from the junk food.

Hi Ladies!  I'm a working mom with two small kids (6 & 7).  I've been tracking calories for the last week or so and I'm finding it really helpful.  My problem right now is exercise.  I'm having a hard time getting into a routine.  I used to work out in the mornings before work but with summertime here and later nights, it's difficult to get back into.  I've wanted to start walking or doing videos at night, but by the time I get home from work, get dinner ready and then cleaned up, spend time with the kids...well, you all know the drill...I'm just too tired...I'd rather just spend the rest of the night on the couch!  I know how good I feel when I work out, so I'm upset that I'm having such a hard time getting back into it...
PS...I'm 33, 5'7" and 160lbs...looking to lose 20 (pre-kiddy weight)

Hi there and welcome! I've found tracking calories to be really helpful too, and I can SO relate to how hard it is to find the time to exercise. I absolutely despise exercising first thing in the morning and can't find the energy in the evenings with so many kid-related things to take care of.  I decided I would take 30 minutes out my work day, just because that's easiest.  It helps that I work for very supportive people (they're chronic disease epidemiologists who understand the importance of physical activity!) and even if all I do is walk for that 30 minutes, I've done SOMETHING. I've been at it a couple of weeks and lost a couple of pounds, which is nice, but the best part is having more energy and being in a much better mood even late in the day. Everybody likes that part!

OK, I've babbled on and on and on... Good luck with your plans!

by LisaRae1028 on July 23rd 2009 at 6:11 pm

That's awesome Hullbee...way to go on the couple of pounds!!!  I like the mornings just because it feels good to get it out of the way...I hate obsessing about it all day.  I should try walking at lunch while the weather is still nice...
How old are your kids?

by hullbee on July 23rd 2009 at 6:38 pm

You know, I like the idea of mornings and getting it out of the way, and sometimes I even plan to walk in the morning before work, but then I get up and all I want is coffee... X-D

I have 2 girls, one is 7 and the other will be 3 in a couple of weeks.  They're fantastic, fascinating little people, but I am so jealous of their boundless energy! I remember being a kid and never getting tired like I do now.  Hopefully, I be building back some stamina here pretty soon...  I DID walk up 8 flights of stairs yesterday and didn't actually die! :D  I'm going to a Zumba class tomorrow with a girl I work with.  She's a few years younger than me and has no kids, plus she does this regularly, so i'm SCARED about how badly it's going to kick my a**... but she assured me it was OK to take it easy if I needed to... wonder if it's OK to crawl into a corner and whimper for mercy 10 minutes in.. :0

by LisaRae1028 on July 24th 2009 at 7:34 am

LOL!  I know the "SCARED" feeling...  My girlfriend is almost 40 but she's in fantastic shape.  She had started some mountain climbing and asked me to join her.  I was worried about going because I knew she'd be trecking with little effort and I was sure I'd be sucking wind after the first incline!!!  It ended up being really good and an awesome workout for the legs...  Lately it's just been too hot at the end of the day to bother with it though.
I'm off to a weekend getaway with the girls today.  I've already checked the calorie content of margaritas so I'll be good with tracking that...I'm worried about the snacking though!!!
Wish me luck! :)

by cborrecco on July 24th 2009 at 10:32 am

Good luck and enjoy your weekend getaway!

by hullbee on July 24th 2009 at 6:39 pm

Well, I'm happy to report that Zumba was AWESOME!!  I LOVED it!  And i was able to stick through the whole class without really having to stop to rest (there's a bit of a pause between songs, which helped).  My legs are total Jello, but it's all good. :D

Have a fantastic weekend getaway LisaRae!  and have a margarita for me (I love 'em!)!

by LisaRae1028 on July 26th 2009 at 7:07 pm

Well...I'm back!  It was a fantastic weekend, but as suspected there was way to many margarita's and chips to bother counting!  Not to mention the shooters....ugh!
Anywho, I'm back on track today...I ate really healthy and got some meals prepared for the week.  I'm going to attempt to get up early tomorrow morning and do a step video.  I'm getting my hair done tomorrow night so I doubt I'll be able to fit a workout in in the evening.
Glad to here Zumba worked out!  I don't think I've ever heard of it but it sounds fun...is it like dance?  Is that at your gym?
How was your weekend?

by hullbee on July 27th 2009 at 5:28 am

Sounds like you had fun, though, and that's also important! :) Plus you're back on track - good for you!  Did you get up and do your step vid?  (I've never tried step, but always thought it looked interesting.)

Zumba is a lot like dancing! It's sort of a fusion of aerobics and dancing, I guess (haven't really done aerobics since the Jane Fonda days...). Definitely worth the price of a video or class, if you can find an instrnuctor near you.  Yes, it's at the gym where I work (in the medical center of a private university), and everything at the gym from machines and classes to towels and shampoo is free for employees - how cool is that?  Up to now, I really haven't taken advantage of it, but that is going to change!

Weekend was good but busy - boating on Saturday took up a lot of the day, so laundry, grocery shopping and yard work took up most of Sunday.  Still got out to walk both days, though. :)

I also teach children in grades 1-5 who speak English as their second language.   For years, I had 10 -15 pounds of weight that I called baby weight. After years of putting the kids first, I let myself go.   Like many others,  my children have  grown up practically in the blink of an eye and and so has my weight.  Yes, I'm still busy with the "kids" but also have found that I have more free time than ever before . (It only sounds wonderful when you know they'll be home after the movie is over.)    I have no excuses, just a lack of will power.  As I've reached the "40s" milestone, I know if I don't get the weight off now, it may never happen.  I'm too young to look and feel old.  I'm ready for a change.  I'm looking forward to the support of other moms who understand.

Hey, I'm Michelle, a working mom, with three girs, 14, 11, and 7.  They keep me busy, but I love them so much.  I have been carrying around the extra weight since I had my first daughter.  I gained 88 pounds with her, I gained 10 with my second, and gained 4 with my third child.  so yep, been carrying around the extra weight for 14 years.  My oldest daughter is my motivation, she is heavier, and needs to lose about 50 or 60 pounds.  Yes, I want to lose this weight also, but I need to lose this, so I can be a role model for her.  She struggles, with her extra lbs. , and my heart aches for her.  I made a promise to myself, that I am going to get healthier, and I am not going to quit as I have in the past.  Need alot of support, I dont' have the best self esteem, which is a road block of itself, but I am working on it.  I look forward to being part of this group.  Have a great Week!

Welcome Michelle. Glad you are here. I totally understand the self esteem issue and it looks as if we are in the same boat. I too gained a ton of weight with my babies and have been carrying an extra 140lbs for 15 years. I started LS 9/08 and since have lost 70lbs. I am half way to where I want to be. This can be done and you are worth every lb lost. Good luck we are here for one another.

Hello working moms!

posted by hullbee on 9:27 am

So glad to have found this group!  I am the mom of 2 little girls (just turned 7 and almost 3), I work full-time and have a small, side-line business that amounts to a part-time job, and a house and a husband to run. The 7-yr-old goes to an academic magnet school, so she has homework every night, plus she plays soccer, and her sister Never. Stops. Moving. Ever!  So we are pretty busy.... :D

I turned 39 last week and decided I am DONE lugging around the 30 extra pounds that are leftover from the last pregnancy and that I am going to lose them - and keep them off - before I turn 40 (sort of my in-advance 40th birthday present to myself).  I started tracking my calories a few days ago (what an eye-opener, yikes!).  I used my birthday money to purchase an iPod and my awesome husband bought me a Nike+, which I'm using to keep myself motivated to walk every day. I'm not a gym person and I like being outside (even in the heat in Nashville...), and I figure no matter what's going on, I can - and WILL - manage to fit in 30 minutes of walking every day.  The Nike+ has been worth it so far -- I'm very visually-oriented, so uploading my time and miles and seeing it posted graphically on the Nike+ website has made it fun.  Yesterday I shocked the heck out myself and actually ran for about 2 minutes!  (Hoping my joints don't decide to hate me for it...heh-heh..)

Anyway, that's my plan:  just watch what I eat and get off my butt for 30 minutes every day, no excuses!  Good luck to all you awesome moms with your own plans -- we can do it!! :)

Hi my name is Holly.......I am 40 years old with 2 children.  I have a 9 year old son, who is currently on a swim team and has a busy schedule.  Then I have a 4 year old daughter, who is quite a pistol herself, but has not chosen an area of interest yet.  She seems to be leaning towards swimming like her big brother.  Anyways, I am trying this site and another to keep track of my calories, but am finding it difficult to stay where I am supposed to be.
Additionally, I know when school starts back up this year, I will never have the time to measure and make sure I am eating properly.  I am a teacher and I barely have time to eat lunch, let a lone count the calories I am eating.  I am really hoping you all can help me out and let me know how you are staying on track because I really need help.
THANKS! And I look forward to getting to know everyone :)

Hi Holly,
Here are a few things I have found helpful in maintaining some sort of control in a very very busy lifestyle I have.  My girls are 12 & 18 and my 18yo is special needs. I run non-stop between their activities, my job and lets add a little community service in as I keep taking on new projects.  I have utilized the my plate function to my advantage. I created meals which can be stored on here. So when I pack and plan my daily meals, I use that to calculate my calories and my menu as well. It gives me variety and simplifies what used to be a terrible task. It also prevents me from stopping in McDonalds and other convenience food stops. I also cook alot on the weekends for the week so I can grab a piece of grilled chicken easily.  My fruit and snacks are packed in advance so all I have to do is grab pre-protioned food. It seems to be working I am down 25lbs since April.  Wishing you good food choices and extra wlll-power!

It's about time!

Hi there,
I am a 47 year old mom of three sons and a practicing attorney.  I have finally decided to seek some support and some direction in this journey . I am a Lance lover and my dearest friend is a cancer survivor, I thought this was the best place to go to find like minded souls.  I have fought my weight most of my adult life always managing to stay in the "overweight" but healthy zone.  The last several crazy, hectic years have sent me to the unhealthy zone and I am now feeling the impact that excess weight has on my health.  I have fought a back injury for 12 months and recently been told by my doctor to watch my blood pressure.  Now this fight is all about being healthy, not about how I look or how others perceive me.  I just want to feel better, take less Advil and live longer!  I am blessed with a wonderful husband who loves my size 16 bod (and he loved my size 10, 12 and 14 bod!) .  I have always been a relatively healthy eater (i like my veggies and fruit) but volume seems to be my Waterloo.  Eating whole grain pasta is great - just not 2 cups worth!  I have no weight loss number goal - just a desire to change the way I eat and become more active and hopefully, I will feel and look better.  Glad to know you all.

Hello all working moms!

I love this group cause everyone here will understand that it is hard to find time to do somethng for yourself when you have a family and a full-time job. I am 38 and have a 17 year old son, a15 year old daughter and a 3 year old chocolate lab running partner. I discovered "livestrong" when we started a Biggest Loser at work 16 weeks ago. I am happy to report that this website is the reason I won the contest and more importantly lost 38 pounds. I make more sensible food choices and make time for excercise every day. Usually I get up early (5:30am) and get a 5 - 7 km run in before work. With the weather being so nice and the dog never letting me forget ( she lives for the morning runs) it has been getting easier and easier to get up early. I have nothing but great stuff to say about this website and have bragged about it so much my friends are now members.

Just getting started

posted by BookWorm5 on 8:44 am

Hi Everyone,
I've have 'sort of' tried to lose weight over the past couple of years as the scale has gradually gone up.  I can be good for a little while but have a problem with consistency so I'm looking for a group where we can help encourage and support each other.  This one sounds like a good fit since I'm married, have a 16 year old son and work full time.  I have a horrendous commute making my days very long.  I get up at 4:30 and have to be on the road by 5:30 to be at work by 7am and don't get home until 5 - 5:30 sometimes 6 in the evening.   Then of course it's dinner and exhaustion.  I joined a workout club last year and managed to stick with working out 2 - 3 times a week for about 3 months before tapering off to nothing.  Since I'm finding it so hard to find the time and energy to do much I decided to try the Dare to Walk 20 minutes a day and to reduce my caloric intake by tracking what I eat.  I know it's not much but it's a start.  My goal is to stick with it for longer than four months and to lose 20 pounds.

Thanks for starting this group!

I joined this site a week ago and have been looking for good groups to join - this one seems just right.  I am a lawyer in Canada, mother of three boys (15, 7, and 3 - my avatar is my youngest at age 1), with my husband at home (he is chronically ill with MS).  I am still carrying almost all the weight I gained with my last pregnancy, and couldn't find the time to exercise on a regular basis.  After hurting my back a few weeks ago and missing work for a week, it scared me straight and I realized I had to make a change.  I joined a  (6:00 am) morning exercise boot camp and the trainer recommended this site to track my calories and exercise.  I spend an awful lot of time at my desk, so it's great to have this resource at my fingertips.  I'm looking forward to getting to know the rest of the members here and sharing with you all.

Hi there!  I am a high school teacher, so yes, I am "off" for the summer.  But, I need help because when I start school, I am swamped every day (even weekends).  I am a 36 (almost 37) year old mom of two who wants to be in great shape as soon as possible, but definately by the time I am 40.  I have made every excuse in the books for not working out.  To be honest, I hate to be in pain and I give up too easily.
I am working from home daily right now.  I have new courses I am teaching in the fall, so I am prepping for them now.  I'd like to get into a routine that is "doable" in the fall so that school can fit into my workout schedule instead of my workout schedule fitting in to my school schedule.
I have started tracking all my food.  What an eye opener!
Thanks!
Sara

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Dani and I am a soon to be professor at Arizona State U (in the fall). Ive just finished writing my dissertation and I have a 14 month old. My family and I are moving to Phoenix in August. I want to get my eating and exercising in check before I hit my new big time job. I don't want to set myself up to stress eat and ignore exercise. This is a good way to be honest!

Need help !

posted by goodsoul on 2:31 am

Hi everyone,
I'm Vidisha a single mom to a two and a half year old, working as a corporate trainer in India. The bizarre thing is - I was  a super skinny person all my life and kept wanting to put on weight ! (lol) Come 30s and my daughter and here I am with a body i still dont identify with . At times, in  a supermarket or somewhere I'll catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror & i cant identify with the person I see.
Being skinny all this time gives you all the wrong food habits and in my case a mega sweet tooth. On top of that , I started working in night shifts which meant snacking, coffee, snacking and finally going to bed at 2 am with a full meal in my stomach!
Recently I have decided that enough is enough , I need to stop whining and start doing something . So my first stop was this site where i've started logging in my daily food inttake. I deseperately want to start some physical activity but cant go to the gym coz i need to pick up my kid from work. I like this forum and the kind of encouragement i see here. Plese give me your suggestions on how to start off , how to curb my sweet tooth and on what physical activites i could do . Thanks alot
