ADD/ADHD Diseases and Its Treatment
With the ever increasing hectic life, there is an emergence of new disease in children as well in adults. Attention-
Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD or ADHD) is one of the recent diseases and is one of the most common diseases for neurobehavioral disorders in adolescence as well as in early childhood.
According to recent research there is an increase of ADD/ADHD sufferers from 3% to 7%. This disease is more prevalent in boys than in girls. There is certain trend of behavior which can be seen in children and adults, thus displaying the characteristics of ADHD.
Some of its features are:
1. Hyperactivity (Physical restless and excessive Activity)
2. Impulsivity(Delay of gratification and impaired impulse control)
3. Distractibility(Poor sustainability and less concentration)
ADHD does not come alone; it comes with many other problems. There are many more usual problems that are associated with ADHD-depression, oppositional defiant disorder, bipolar disorder, conduct disorders & the ability to learn and retention power. Research shows that there are 50 to 70 percent who are suffering from ADHD and has other problem also.
According to research, 24 to 30 percent patients are suffering from ADHD & also do suffer from depression. It was a misconception earlier that depression is an outbreak of the failure of ADHD. So because of this reason depression was ignored. But over the year this misconception has been solved and results shown that depression and ADHD are two separate problems and need its own attention and treatments.
An effective treatment for ADHD is a proper grouping of medication, therapy and counseling sessions. It is also essential to have a proper session with Adults and Children to give them knowledge about ADD/ADHD.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis of HDD is bit complicated. Stimulant medications usually used to cure ADD can cause some negative effects which can further lead to depression and bipolar disorders making it difficult for the doctors to differentiate the two. Doctors are confused by this situation and can’t give proper medication. So in order to get rid of the confusion they first treat depression and then ADD.
Medicines:
Stimulant medicines like Dexedrine, Ritalin and Adderall are the general drugs which are prescribed by the doctors and are the most effective. Yet it is based on the discretion of the doctors.
Therapy:
Also behavior and Cognitive therapy are used with special behaviors and to deal the emotional aspects of ADD. It helps to improve their organizational skills and productivity.
