Mountaineer Customs

Mountaineering is a sport practiced in wilderness areas and often includes activities such as rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, glacier travel and ice climbing. Mountaineers have a wide variety of specific customs and etiquette designed to encourage safety and ecological conservation when they are traveling in backcountry areas. Beginning mountaineers are typically schooled very carefully in these customs and guidelines.
