by misha73 on September 9, 2008 at 2:06 PM
My son has already asked me to take him to France next year for Le Tour and I certainly will. Lance, you are an inspiration.
by BrandonZ on September 9, 2008 at 2:08 PM
I have to see this.
by Charlie111 on September 9, 2008 at 2:15 PM
It's highly unlikely that they will allow him to race in France, where he is seen as a cheater and everybody is sure he was doped. Also, the team he reportedly chose for the comeback, Astana, was not allowed to participate in the Tour this year and almost certainly will not be invited next year.
by Henrikefh on September 9, 2008 at 2:38 PM
I hate to say that you're probably right. I'm the leader of the LIVESTRONG Army Northern Germany here in Europe and a participant and mentor for the LIVESTRONG Challenge and already received tons of messages talking about doping, cheating and other more ridiculous lies/rumors. I almost managed to get people's focus on cancer issues, but this brings back people's tendencies on blaming Lance for everything that is wrong in professional cycling.
There are some European fans, too, but at the moment, it'll put us in a very challenging position.
by ucantbserious on September 9, 2008 at 2:43 PM
That has been the case for the last several years and they have still let him race. What would make next year any different? Did you not see the report that Astana said he wasn't racing for them? Your comments add nothing but speculation about something you know no more about than anyone else.
by justinnewton on September 9, 2008 at 2:16 PM
I am excited by your return. It will be nice to see an athlete who can compete at the very top of their sport without resorting to doping or other cheats.
by ScottJoy on September 9, 2008 at 2:18 PM
The purpose is noble, "to raise awareness of the global cancer burden." I'm very excited to learn all about the international LIVESTRONG strategy!

Forget Astana, how about Team Livestrong!?
Attendance just doubled for the 09 Tour of California.
Rock on Lance!
by Tshoeeats on September 9, 2008 at 5:45 PM
Lance may not be able to ride the Tour of California. He needs to be in the testing pool for 6 months and Tour de CA is in Jan. Not enough time. Maybe this will revive the tour of Georgia which is hurting.
by djh0804 on September 9, 2008 at 7:47 PM
Has been in the testing pool. Applied back before Leadville. Can qualify for TOC.

I was delighted and worried on hearing the news about Lance, what a great thing to have him back to the sport that i love, but then what if he cannot be as good as he was, no one wants to see the great man reduced to just good. I felt we should be gratful for the times that he has given us and savour the memories. But was i missing the point, Lance has nothing to prove and the abilitie to draw attention to a mass killer, so welcome back Lance, thou you never left our hearts, and help us all to LIVESTRONG.
by hathaway49 on September 9, 2008 at 2:47 PM

You do it Lance, you are more than an inspiration.
by glynpwd on September 9, 2008 at 2:57 PM
I doubt he will go to Astana for 2009. Alberto Contador will be their team leader for the Tour De France and he would not be at all happy if Lance came in and be Number 1. The Garmin Chipotle team, Team Columbia or even a new team created by Lance would be a more logical way forward. Anyway, great news to hear that Lance is back, it can only improve the image of a tarnished sport.
by AlreadyBald on September 9, 2008 at 2:57 PM
This is so very exciting!
When I heard this last night, I put in another 15 minutes in the gym, just from the inspiration.
He is going to raise fitness and cancer awareness to another giant level- by just competing.

Hey Lance.
England calling....
Wow, just heard the news.....
Standing in my kitchen is a framed edition of France No1 sports newspaper L'EQUIPE
Published date : Wednesday 13 July 2005.
Headline : SUPERMAN, LE RETOUR (Translation: THE RETURN OF SUPERMAN).
The headline was in praise of your amazing effort on the climb to Courchevel.
Hey Man, They were right!
Superman is back.
KEEP GIVING THE INSPIRATION AND HOPE, LANCE.
You have my full family support, hope to see you out there one day on le tour.
Good luck dude ( look out for Cav for your new team..)

I could not be more thrilled Lance Armstrong is returning to the sport of cycling. Despite what some misinformed people accuse Lance of using performance enhancing drugs, I applaud his efforts. Lance has never tested positive nor will he. People should not judge a book by its cover. Watch the way Lance trains. He has twice the commitment than most professional cyclists and that is what drives him to be successful. Pure love for the sport, if only more could feel the same way. Congratulations

Lance, during the unforgettable battle you did with cancer, you got to a depth of understanding about human suffering that has made you a champion. You will always be a champion of transcendent proportions. Please put in all the devotion into preparation that you love to do, but if you get dropped on the first climb of the tour, keep your chin high, ride the whole race, support your team members, and prove to all the doubters (regarding your motives) that it is not about self-aggrandizement. Then, your heroic status, in addition to being completely verified, will be all the more long lasting.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!! It's like Christmas in September...only with the main colors being yellow and black instead of green and red. =) A coworker and I got the news from his wife who called to tell us she had read it on-line. Lance, that's the type of impact your being has on people...this is important enough news for them to want to share it with loved ones because they know you mean something to them! When we see you ride, we feel as if we're riding with you...when you're in agony, we hold on tight just to feel the thrill of seeing you overcome...and when you win, we feel as if we've won something. The entire Alberto Family can't wait to watch you overcome atleast once more! You truly have a profound impact...thanks for what you bring to humanity! Allez....

Lance's return seems less about the TDF and more about raising awareness (and funds for cancer research) and I can't describe how incredibly good that makes me feel. Watching this man come full circle from the angry, young Team Motorola days to this is something that actually makes me feel that mankind is not completely lost. There is hope and I for one will find someway to give back in my community in some small way as a way of making the world a better place. Lance has gone from being the face of mainstream cancer acceptance to an active participant in cancers elimination. Thank you for what is less of a "come back" and instead is a "come full circle".

Take it to the next level! ALL communities need to know (and support) the cancer health resources available to them.

No-ones listening to herve - typical French whining cos they can't win at cycling any more. They whined when they got destroyed at the Beijing velodrome, now they'll whine some more.
Go and gob off at Virenque and the rest of the French 'heroes' - leave the rest of us to celebrate the good news

Just perfect.... Would be nice if Ullrich would also return and see the two of you battle like in the 'old days'...

How about them apples! I have always really regretted not going to France and seeing you battling in the Alp's or the Pyrenees in one of your legendary, real heroic wins. I will definitely be there next summer and I will definitely cheer you on! I'm sure many will argue recklessness towards your legacy in going for another win. I'm satisfied seeing that you obviously don't give a sh**, or at least that you find it more important to yet again prove the everlasting sceptics wrong. Wish you all the best in your upcoming challenge, your fight against cancer and your life in general! With warm regards, Fred (Norway)

I couldn't believe what I was reading when I initially heard the news you may be returning to pro cycling and now that it has been officially announced I cannot hide my excitement. One of the reasons I became interested in cycling was because of your influence after reading 'It's Not About The Bike'. A total legend not just in cycling, but with what you've achieved with the LAF.
The very best of luck, can't wait to see you racing again!!!

I'm very curious Lance his new cycling team and fellow teammates. There is a rumour going on that Lance will reunite with Johan Bruyneel and join the Astana cycling team. However, a spokesman of Astana denies that Lance will join Astana.
I hope that Jan Ullrich also make his comeback.

The greatest people in the history are making the diferense when thay were on the top. The come back is nice, but you can make a lot more for the people who has canser if you are someone who was the BEST of the best in all history of cycling. Dont destroy everything you are and represent.
If you comeback you can make enemies and that is not good for the couse. Best wishes but I think is not soo good idea to come back.

Age is no problem. As a sports psychologist i was honoured to meet, when he was 48 a great track athlete of the 60;s Ron CLARKE, who , during his athletic career brke no less than 17 World Records from 5k to 20k on the running tracks of the World.
When I asked him if he had any regrets, he said "yes, instead of retiring at 31, I should have gone on beyond 41, for at that age my training times were actually faster than when I retired "
There are so many stories of longevity in sport with not enough space to post them, so lance will have no problem as long as he is still hungry.
Please pass this message to him along with any other that is productive. Dennis Colton

What a legend!! what and inspiration and hero. im behind you all the way lance
by dennisecolton on September 10, 2008 at 9:02 AM
Age is no barrier.Ron Clarke, a great runner (track athlete of the 60,s) retired at 31 after breaking 17 world records.
When asked, 18 yrs after retirement if he had any regrets he said yes he did and that was that he felt he had retired far too early in life.
It appears that his training times at 41 were actually faster than his best ones at 30 ! If lance is still hungry, he will win as long as he stays upright on his bike and misses the handbags. Dennis
by dropped_again on September 10, 2008 at 9:03 AM
I have mixed feelings: great for the sport, great for the aging, great for Cancer; Bad for retirees (no more excuses), bad for competition (no more excuses), bad for Bruyneel (no more excuses), bad for up-and-coming surprises like this year's Tour (if you are able to return to full tilt - everyone rides for second place).

Lance et al: I cheer you on for as long as you need to do what you do. I'm a racer with brain cancer (no cure, my ass!!), and as long as I live, chemo or not, I will keep racing. Going into my 3rd cross season on chemo and I'll be dead before I stop!!! So You keeping it together for another season is another season of inspiration to me!!!
by John41r on September 10, 2008 at 9:17 AM
Lance; I always dreamt of this but realized that it was probably outside the realm of possiblity. Why do it when your have already proved yourself. It seems like this is all risk and no reward. Then I realized that this is not about your pursuing glory or fame. you have all that and more. This is about bringing more exposure and a larger awareness of cancer. This is for your people, the millions of people who are suffering because they have got one of the many forms of cancer that can invade our bodies.
I couldnt be happier and I hope (and pray) that you are successful in your endevour to bring an end to this horrific disease once, and for all. Good Luck and I hope this is your best year ever. I know it will be mine! Thank you Lance!!!! -John

VS better get their act together for the massive media coverage of the TDF. I'm glad to see a celebrity and sport's hero putting his fame to good use. Wait until those boys see what running does to leg strength. If they thought it was a rough time before, they better step back and kiss themselves goodnight this time around.
As for the detractors, know that people will still be there for you despite your negativity. People like you, unfortunately, provide the failure commentary neded to fuel the ultimate success that will inevitably arrive at the end of July 2009. He wins because his game is cancer awareness, not cycling!
Congratulations on your 8th TDF win! Er....should I wait until after July 2009 to say this?

Your welcome campeon, im very excited for the return of the legend, right now we can say that we are living on the Lance's age, is the best news that I ear yesterday.
Mexico is very fun and really is the best thing for the tour of france.....

My son Jackson is 7 and while he saw your last win, he only knows you from what my wife and I tell him when we watch the tour and when I read to him from your books. He thinks you are great, however, George is his hero and it is a good choice. He won his heat this year in the CSC Invitational kids race and wants to be a professional cyclist. When I told hom you were coming back he almost couldn't go to sleep. I had to promise to take him to Georgia in the spring. See you on Brasstown Bald, and thanks for coming back to give Jackson and everyone else inspiration. LIVESTRONG for all.

What a true hero !never gives up on his campaign, a role model for any future stars!!
Having personally gone through the experience of possible cancer diagnosis this opened our eyes to the amount of people every single day going through the same agonising progress of diagnosis.
Lance you are an inspiration to us all, good luck with 2009 we will surley be whatching you WIN the 2008 Tour de France.

I am sad to see Lance's return. He was great in the old era of cycling. That time, with all of its tainted performances, is mostly over. Let the sport recover with new stars we can admire like Contador and Gesink. I am also sad to Lance moving backwards. I have been impressed with the growth of the foundation, and as an avid supported, was looking for Lance to take an ever more active role. Spending time on a bike is a step back for him and the foundation.
You don't need the cheers anymore. Grow up and move on with your life.

With the stories of the 'successful experienced' at the 2008 Olympics, the polite second place finish at Leadville and race pace of the clean 2008 Tour; the return of Armstrong in 2009 is perfect. LiveSTRONG members should be proud and should step it up in your absence. Lets hope sponsors, partners and fans contribute as well. Win the TDF or not, this is already a victory!

Lance`s contribution to society far outweighs any real or perceived faults. As a physician screening cancers of all sorts, I welcome his help. If only everyone could be so positive. So easy to criticize. So difficult to do.
Best of Health Lance!

I am very excited about this news and am looking forward to hear more about the plan later this month.
Cancer has hit my family very hard over the past few years, including the passing of my mom in 2004 and the recent finding of a cancerous mass in one of my dad's lungs. I have noticed that the media coverage of cancer research and support has diminished over the past few years and I hope that your professional return will help to refocus national ( and international) attention on this.
Good luck and God bless!

For a HERO who has already won 7th times is no need to prove himself for the 8th time.
Lance will not be in France to decorate Le Tour organization!
Lance will not be dare to kick the ass of French press!
Lance will not be there to satisfy the demand of crazy cycling fans!
Lance will not be there to satisfy his ego!
Lance, once again, will be in France to make the whole World believe that we can win against Cancer.

I wish Lance would go for something he hasn't won yet-the Giro or Vuelta, or the Classics(Paris-Roubaix!). I believe that would be much more interesting. If he won one of those and followed it up with a shot at the hour record, that would make for a comeback for the books. I went to the 2005 Tour to see watch Lance, but another Tour for Lance? I'm solidly behind Contrador in the Tour, and the future of Astana with Contrador.

I have to correct you on this, Michael Phelps is not the only one.... Kelly Slater has won 8 world surfing titles and is on track for his 9th. I don't think you can discredit Lance with having 7, he is one of the most amazing athletes to have walked this planet... Oh, i still think Ian Thorpe is a better swimmer than Phelps. Then you also have someone like Emil Zatopek, who is the only person in history to win a gold at the Olympics for the 5k, 10k & Marathon in one single Olympic games. So i don't agree with you when you say you have to win 8 to be amongst the best.

Doesn't Bill Russell have eight, too?

As a surgeon who works with cancer patients frequently, I am able to see the strength it takes to get through these extremely difficult times. I am inspired by the way that people face the challenges that they are comfronted with. I don't think that people realize the fortitude they possess until they are put to the test. This is the message that Lance gives to us. We all have it in us, the determination to push ourselves further than we ever thought possible when we are comfronted with an extreme challenge. As I watched Lance push himself up the rediculously steep climbs of the mountian stages of the tour, it helps me to see just what the human psyche is capable of when it is backed against the wall...almost anything.

I agree that seeing Lance in races he hasn't won yet would turn my head. If history is written and he races another TdF, it wouldn't matter if he won it, placed on the podium, or rode himself into last place. What he stands for in this world is larger than life itself. There have been terrific spokespersons over the years for a variety of causes. Jerry Lewis, Danny Thomas, Doug Flutie... The list goes on, but none have brushed with the cause as seriously extreme as Lance did... And years ago Lance was right, he wasn't the next Greg LeMond. He was the first Lance Armstrong. I applaud you and your efforts... They are brave... They are valiant... They are the reason I wear the bracelet... They are Lance.

Lance fantastic!!! now you have to read this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now you're returning to professional cycling you will need a decent team for the Tour de France next year. In Holland, were i'm from, there was a great cyclist who quit cycling last year. Michael Boogerd! i'm sure you know him well (you let him win the stage at La plange couple years ago). Yesterday, in reaction to your comeback, he told on national television that he also wants to make a comeback if he receives an offer he cannot refuse! You will need some decent cyclists to get you over those giant mountains and therefore he is perfect!!! So don't wast another day and get him to race for you right now!!!
You will thank me for this later :)
cheers, Jeff

doe effe normaal. "you let him win the stage at La plange couple years ago".

I am fan from You since early 90´s and it will be a pleasure to watch you in the French Tour, and I think You have many to teach (experience) to our spanish future star Alberto Contador.

Well time will tell as to whether you have made the right decision - the only way to find out is to try. To ride again for the cause of cancer is noble - but surely there is a little self-interest involved. Being an Aussie I would love to see Cadel Evans have his day after two second places in a row - but you are free to come second!!!
Good luck

Good luck Lance, I hope everything goes well for you and this is the correct decision to make. Whatever the outcome you are an inspiration to many (including myself), will always be remembered as one of the great tour riders and I'm sure will continue to raise the profile of cancer research. I lost a best friend in April (only 37) and my mother in July to this horrible disease, and want to thank you personally for everything you have done and will continue to do in the fight against it. (If you read these comments!).

Lance, you are making the biggest error of your career. In the cycling world, Astana means drug scandals, so why the hell do you want to be a part of that? I do not think you took performance-enhancing drugs between 1999 and 2005, but most of the French do. Coming back with the team that WAS DENIED THE POSSIBILITY OF RACING IN THE 2008 TOUR DE FRANCE BECAUSE OF DRUG SCANDALS is, for them, the one proof they had been searching for.
by RonS on September 11, 2008 at 1:00 PM
Nicolas, you miss the point. Lance is not doing this for himself or career. If TDF bans Astana again Lance will expose it for what it is; A TRAVESTY, in which case TDF be damned!
Astana w/ Contador, Lance, et al will rule.
Live Strong, I'll be on the course watching the Amgen in California.

Knowing a group of people struggle with Cancer and seeing some loose, It makes me very happy that you are doing this to help all people in the world survive. It will be great to see him compete with the schleck brothers and vandeveld? all of which are coming into there primes and coming off a great tour. this should be good for the tour! The schleck's looked excellent this year and I think they are going to be the best challenge to lance. Anybody know who/how good the astana team is? will they be able to support lance through the race, I think thats the biggest challenge for sure, if they cant stave off attacks and lance has to do it himself I really don't see him winning.

First of all, I'd like to congratulate Lance Armstrong for his relentless effort in raising awareness in fighting cancer (himself a cancer survivor) since he retired from pro racing. Regarding his plan of coming out retirement to return to high level pro racing, I wish Lance Armstrong all the luck and regardless of the result, the real winner here is his objective of taking the fight against cancer to a global level and the 8th Tour de France crown is a bonus. -Francis A.B. I am thrilled that Lance is going to return to cycling. I've been following the Tour since 1980. When I was diagnosed with cancer, my younger brother who had been a competitive cyclist sent me a copy of "Its Not About The Bike." And when I was recovering from surgery in 2004, I watched the daily coverage of the Tour and saw Lance become the first person to win it six times. It gave me the optimism that I needed to recover and continue on with my radiation treatments. I've been cancer free for four years.
I think Lance's participation will raise the devastated opinion of the Tour. And it will make it fun to watch again. I just hope Johan Bruyneel returns too. I saw him talk about his book "We Might As Well Win," recently and it was really inspiring.

Potential team members: If possible try to get the following stars:
The infamous luitenant - George Hincapi
Mark Cavendish
Yaroslav Popovych

With all respect to your accomplishments and results in the last years, both personal and sportswise, i'm not really thrilled.
I love to watch cycling and i loved watching you cycling but on the other hand i was glad you left and went to do other really important things.
For the first time in years cycling was again a little bit less predictable. Wich, i agree, was more a shortcomming of your opponents.
But your one time / year peak in the tour and your silent role in the rest of the year started to P me off.
It became quit boring.
I'm sure you can get attention on some other level.
You're a legend in my eyes. Keep that, cherish it, you've earnd it.
But don't jump back in the cycling spotlights please. Climb another stage. I'm sure you will succeed then too.
Otherwise i'm starting to think this is nothing more then unmistakable american self-glorification.
Take care, whatever you do.

Hi Lance,
I myself was diagonsed with stage 1 testicular cancer at the age of 25, almost 5 years ago now. Within minutes of the dreadful news I called my brother who said you need to check out this guy called Lance Armstrong. From then on in you have became my hero and still are to this day. Your story is just such an inspiration to so many. I was lucky enough to see you perform in Paris in 2005. When I heard you were coming back again I was thrilled. Now go dance on those pedals like no one else can. I will be there in person at the mountains to cheer you on. All the best buddy.

As a fellow cancer survivor of 4 yrs now. I was diagnosed with stage III lymphomas at 36 yrs old on 9/4. All I have to say is "Livestrong" Lance, you never know if and when that demon can return. I think you know what I mean. Take charge of that peloton again and show them all how its done but mostly do it for all the people affected with cancer. I will be rooting for you. Lance,
I really hope that all of the excited comments don't overwelm you. Everyone knows that what you're doing is tough, regardless of your age. I'm sure everyone hopes that you will win, but if you don't we know that you will do the right thing, even if you have to sacrifice yourself for a fellow teamate.
The world is in dire need of a champion! You have given the world so much already, but now this! As if beating cancer and winning the tour seven times wasn't enough, you decide to take a rest and soften up, then come back and kick tail! That is a true champion.
And still yet, you always retain your humble attitude, which is what I admire in a champion. You were born to inspire, even if people love you, or hate you, they are inspired. I trully wish that everyone had the desire to help others as you do, the world would be a better place. What a wonderful life you have lived, and continue to live, and may you LIVESTRONG!
Blessings,
Greg Willard

I've been a fan of Lance since his early days, and even more so since his battle with cancer and awesome Tour de France victories. I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer April '08. The first book I pulled out for inspiration was "It's Not About The Bike". I read it in about a day, and it completely changed the way I approached my battle. Lance truly inspired me to kick the cancer's ass and not give up. I am about half way through all of my treatments (chemo, radiation, then reconstruction). My husband and I have said for years we'd love to go to France during the Tour. But when I heard Lance announce his return to training and no doubt another Tour win, I decided we have to go! It will be the thrill of my life just to see Lance scream by on the bike, and win another yellow jersey. He is an awesome human, and my hero!
I'm sure Lance will receive many similar emails. I just want him to know there will be two more fans cheering him on!

Happy Birthday Lance from a fan whose birthday was, well, yesterday! You have been an inspiration to me as I "live strong." Though I've never faced cancer, I am to my doctors' knowledge the longest ever survivor of a benign brain tumor on my pituitary that I had removed 32 years ago this past August, when I was 8. Doctors didn't think I'd live, but yet I have, and so have been quite inspired by Lance's exploits since surviving cancer. Go Lance! As Luke used to say, "make them suffer!" -- J. Hurley

RIde, Lance, Ride! I want to say that winning the next Tour (And We're all sure you will) is Secondary to the decision To make a comeback. When you decided to ride again, you screamed to the world that you are the Captain of your own destiny! From the cloud of dust, mud, pain, fear, sweat, and tears of the events of your life that were not of your making you roll out proud, head bloodied but Unbowed. INVICTUS! INVICTUS! INVICTUS! You are a champion's champion. If there were 300 Lance Armstrongs at Thermopylae, the gap would have never been breached. I wish you "no chain", brother.

The cancer business is too big to allow a "cure". Science already knows the cause of cancer and how to prevent it and cure it. Medical science does not accept it because cancer is too profitable. Sorry Lance, but look outside of the box and you will find some real answers

HI Lance,
I'm so motivated to keep fighting against my Sarcoma. I just returned after 16 days at the hospital and more then 10 hours in surgery. I watched the Tour the France this year and I asked my self how could be if you still racing. Now I can image this happen.
GO LANCE!

Dear Lance,
The pack is faster now , the disease huge and you are a miracle. The business side may even be a bit easier than the road. It will be an enormous task to come back and reach your previous level of competition again. The danger in that is reputational risk for yourself and your foundation and all the good that you aim to achieve by doing this. The world is a cruel place. They remember only the Malliot Jaune .
GOOD LUCK !!! If any one human can pull this off, it is you.

I could hardly BELIEVE IT when someone texted me the cbs news alert that you were going to Race again! This announcement is one of the biggest undertakings in the history of sports, knowing that the type of person that you are that if you enter a race you aim To WIN and nothing short. This doesn't mean you have any less respect for the other riders, au contraire, you will bring new heights to the cause you've given you all to already, and may the world be a better place because of it. You are truly inspiring with the realities that are thrown at us daily and year upon year and may many more people find hope through you for your stellar example to LIVESTRONG!

Hey Lance,
I was, and still am, totally stoked about your comeback plans. Cycling has not been the same since you left. You have given me the motivation to make a comeback to racing. I watched you win the time trial in Briancon in 2004 and will never forget the experience. I hope to repeat that thrill in 2009. Good luck buddy. Live Strong! I try to everyday. Aloha, garyc

Marina

hello to the livestrong team. i was wondering,if is there a chance to write a letter to lance which he reads personally? because i really would love to write him (he is my idol) but i don't wanna write it here and i don't wanna write it to an adress where someone of his team will read it and will answer in "his name". i hope you understand.

Dear Lance, I believe in you and you were always my favourite in the tour de france. I red your books and since I am with you and I am still amazed by the power you have after all you have suffered from. For cycling you need a good bike, a good team and power in the legs. But up there on the mountain you need something else- which takes place in your head, its about what you want and how much you want it. You got it and this is why you can win an eight time! I am with you this summer, you will do it!
