I am really joining this group for my daughter. She is 11 yrs old and has recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. She was never a "petite" child, but has been gaining more and more weight over the last couple years. She is now weighing in at 119 pounds. I have never had much issue with weight gain so the only way I knew to try and help her was control her food intake, encourage her in exercise etc. When none of this seemed to be helping, I started suspecting a medical condition, and that is why I had her tested. She is reaching the age where kids can say cruel things and the last straw for me was seeing the look in her face on our shopping trip. She could not fit into any of the children sizes and we has to go to the Juniur dept. I had to go keep getting larger sizes for her and I could tell she was embarassed and unconfortable with this. We finally found here size at 7 or in some cases 9 's. That is the same size that I wear and she did ask how much I weigh and what size I wear. When I told her she was clearly disappointed and my heart broke. The doctors want to put her on Synthroid. What I want to know is, are there any natural alternatives that are safe for children her age? I want to help to her, so if anyone knows of anything, please let me know, so that I can avoid my child being pumped up with more chemicals.
