About Me
I am a happily married mother of four, though only the youngest is at home finishing up high school. I have gained a lot of weight in the last 5 years. I fractured my ankle 13 years ago and am just recovering from ankle fusion surgery in May. I can walk again but with a limp and not without pain, and not for long. The surgeon says this is as good as it gets so I am trying to lose weight through diet alone. I've hung on through this last year with the support of the people in the Jackson's Challenge group as I work on my recovery.

I went back to college to finish my business degree last fall but had to withdraw at Christmas because it was just too hard to have my foot down for so long and because of the increased pain levels. I'm glad to have more time to focus on ME and to get well and not rush into the future without being ready for it. This gives me more time to focus on my weight issues and to take time to plan meals and track. The Jackson's Challenge group is so encouraging and amazingly helpful. I am so appreciative of the support I've gotten there. I look forward to success in the very near future.

“ My hubbie and I decided when we started dating that we would do something together every week, just the two of us, no matter what.  We've only missed a few weeks in 15 years, and tonight is date night.  We were going to go to the city and out for supper, but I've had an intense week and I don't trust myself.  So even though I'm still on crutches, I'm going to go to the store and pick up ingredients to make a supper that I CAN CONTROL!.  I think it's better this way. I know Doug won't mind.  He knows how much effort it takes to cook while balancing on crutches, and with no kids at home, it'll be better than a date.     Wish me luck.  ”

“I bought a second hand dishwasher yesterday.  We went to a farmer's house to pick it up.  They don't know us but they were older and friendly and ended up asking us in for coffee to visit.  We live in a small town, I'm finding.  As we were leaving over an hour later, they were telling us a story relating to my using crutches, about a friend of theirs who had fallen and broke her leg. During the story, they mentioned "She was a big gal.  Even bigger than you..." and just went on with their story.     Now, they're from the old school where they really didn't mean anything by it, but it still set me back a bit thinking "is that how they perceive me?"  I quickly shook my head and said "who gives a crap what they think" and got over it, but it kinda got to me a little.     Do you think anyone is ever actually in a nice enough body that people don't comment at one time or another?  I look in the mirror and I don't dislike what I see. I'm heavier than I've been, but the ME that is me is someone I really do love, and I have a wonderful supportive husband who loves me and encourages me.  I want to get thin because I hurt from my weight, and I can't do things I need to do and because of my health.  NOT because I care what people think.     How come it still mattered a bit hearing this from strangers do you think?  Just curious. “ Well I got home from college after a day of really realizing that being out of algebra for 28 years is a HUGE deal (my last class is the The Math of Finance) and went straight for the fridge.  I stood there and knew I was going to have to make a good choice, but I was actually hungry and needing some energy to face the night of algebraic equations.  One of my weaknesses has always been hot wings and/or nachos when frustrated, so I thought about that.  I realized that it's actually the hot pepper taste I like, sort of a kick in the pants, so I decided to experiment.    I took some steamed cauliflower from last night's dinner and heated it up (stay with me ) and doused it with hot sauce and ate that instead.  It sounds gross, maybe, but it was still a bit crunchy (not overcooked) and spicy and it was just what I needed to wake me up to focus on the interest problems I have ahead of me.  It was something new to me and it worked.  Maybe my "go to" food wasn't actually what I was going to afterall....    ”
