Timothy S. Harlan, MD, aka Dr. Gourmet, is a board-certified Internist and Associate Chief of General Internal Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. His interest in food and nutrition comes from a background in the restaurant business.

By 18, Dr. Harlan was managing his first restaurant. Four years later he opened his own restaurant, becoming the chef-owner of a small country-French bistro. Eventually, he closed the restaurant to pursue a degree in hotel and restaurant management, but an illness in his family led him to pursue medicine at Emory University School of Medicine.

However, Dr. Harlan's passion for food got him noticed by the patient education publishing firm, Pritchett & Hull. While still in medical school, Dr. Harlan was invited to write a food manual for those with cardiovascular disease. Now in its fourth printing, "It's Heartly Fare" is widely distributed by hospital patient educators to those newly diagnosed with heart disease.
