I used to ride a lot. When I was in college I rode everywhere...to classes, to frisbee practice, to parties, to the grocery store. I was basically a bike commuter. I even rode to work, early in the mornings, when I was home in the summer time. I wasn't using the bike just for transport, however. I really enjoyed touring back then, and did a few overnights.
Then after graduation, the riding stopped, for a number of reasons. Now, I'm in my forties and for the past 20 years, everytime I passed a biker on the road, my heart sank a little and my quads yearned for the burn. But I got fat and lazy instead.
Then, by the grace of God, in May of 2009, I got the itch bad enough to start searching Craig's List for a bike. Again, by the grace of God, I found a great machine only a few towns away. It was a better bike than I deserved, and I was on the fence about justifying the expense, but I am so glad I did.
I cannot explain the feeling, the lifestyle change that has come over me after being back on the bike for these brief few months. If you are on this site and a biker, I probably don't need to explain. It feels so good and I have lost 30 pounds in the process. I'm a biker again and it has been the change that I needed to put me in a good place. I could have spent the last half of my life fat and unhealthy, or fit and well adjusted.
For me, it IS about the bike.
