I am an athletic 57 year old lady. I ran my first marathon (Disney) in January 2009, I planned to run under 5 hours and ran 4:20 and would have done even better if I had not suffered leg cramps at mile 22. This year we upped it and did the Goofy Challenge, half marathon Saturday and full marathon Sunday. Pace was slow, but not really any harder (other than the extreme cold, yes, in Orlando). I have been doing distance running for 30 years and have done at least 1 half marathon each of those years, along with other runs. I race BMX and won the national championship in 2008 in the 45 and over ladies group. Prior to breaking my foot, I was ranked national #1 for 2009 but was unable to race the grand championship. I also enjoy playing golf (and most any other sport). Last July, two days after my doctor released me (see below) I rode the RAGBRAI, which is a bike ride across Iowa (with 10,000 people, something you should try). I was unable to ride everyday (my friend had a car for me), but hope to be able to do the entire ride this year.
The 3rd metatarsal on my right foot broke at the 11th mile of a half marathon the end of April 2009. It didnt heal well, so the end of May the doc put in plate and screws. It took way to long (in my mind) to heal, total non weight bearing for close to three months.
This web site has been a blessing, I track my calories and have managed to get to a more desirable weight for running and general good health. The forums are supportive and informative.
