This savory lentil chili has all the flavors of a traditional chili recipe, but the dark chocolate brings in depth, and the cumin cream balances it all out. Recipe and Image: Sherrie Castellano.



1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over low heat. Stir in the onions and garlic and saute for about five to seven minutes until translucent and slightly caramelized. Turn up the heat to medium and add in the lentils, tomato sauce, broth, salt, pepper, chili powder, cumin and coriander. Stir and bring to a gentle boil for 25 minutes or until lentils are tender.

2. Add in the crushed tomatoes and dark chocolate. Stir and simmer for five minutes more.

3. While this simmers, blend together almond milk, cashews, sea salt, pepper, garlic and cumin making a "cumin cream."

4. Serve with a dollop of cumin cream and top with chopped cilantro, diced avocado and red onion.
