It’s as enticing as a hearty bowl of chili, yet you’ll enjoying it in a lower-calorie way because, cup for cup, you’ll have extra broth.

1. Heat the oil in a stockpot over medium-high. Add the onion and serrano pepper and sauté until the onion is softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
2. Add the broth, tomatoes, vinegar, chili powder, and five spice powder (or cinnamon) and bring to a boil over high. Stir in chili beans (or kidney beans) and salt and return to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, until flavors are well combined, about 10 minutes. Adjust seasoning.
3. Stir in or sprinkle with the cilantro, and serve. (Hint: If desired, serve with hot sauce on the side for extra spiciness.)
