What is Alpha-lipoic Acid?

Folate and folic acid are forms of a water-soluble B vitamin. Folate occurs naturally in food and folic acid is the synthetic form of this vitamin. Folic acid is well-tolerated in amounts found in fortified foods and supplements, in doses less than 1000mcg per day.



Side Effects

Alopecia (hair loss), bloating, bitter taste, bronchospasm, change in sleep patterns, confusion, cramps, diarrhea, excitability, gas, impaired judgment, itching, irritability, nausea, overactivity, psychotic behavior, pruritus, seizure, skin flushing, stomatitis, swelling, hives, vivid dreams, zinc depletion.

Alcohol, antacids, aminosalicylic acid (para-aminosalicylic acid, PAS, paser), antibiotics, aspirin, birth control pills, carbamazepine (Tegretol®), chloramphenicol, cholestyramine (Questran®), colestipol (colestid®), cycloserine (Seromycin Pulvules®), diuretics, estrogens, H2 blockers, metformin (Glucophage®), methotrexate, methylprednisolone (Solu-Medrol®), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), pancreatic enzymes, pancrelipase, pancreatin, pentamidine (pentacarinat®, Pentam 300®), ...

Safety

Avoid if allergic or hypersensitive to folate or any of the product ingredients. It is recommended that pregnant women consume 400 micrograms daily in order to reduce the risk of the fetus developing a defect. Folate is likely safe if breastfeeding.

Dosage

Adults (18 years and older)

U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adults: 400 micrograms daily; 500 micrograms daily for breastfeeding women; 600 micrograms daily for pregnant adult women. Tolerable upper intake levels (UL) per day: The UL is the highest amount that can be taken daily without serious side effects. The UL is 800 micrograms daily for people 14-18 years-old (including pregnant or breastfeeding women); and 1,000 micrograms for adults19 years and older (including pregnant or breastfeeding women).

Children (18 years and younger)

U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) or Adequate for children: For infants 0-6 months-old the AI is 65 micrograms per day; for infants 7-12 months-old the recommended dose is 80 micrograms per day; for children 1-3 years-old the RDA is 150 micrograms per day; for children 4-8 years-old the RDA is 200 micrograms per day; for children 9-13 years-old the RDA is 300 micrograms per day. Tolerable upper intake levels (UL) per day: The UL is the highest amount that can be taken daily without serious side effects. For children 1-3 years-old the UL is 300 micrograms; for children 4-8 years-old the UL is 400 micrograms; for children 9-13 years-old the UL is 600 micrograms; for adolescents 14-18 years-old the UL is 800 micrograms.
