What is Algin?

Algin comes from brown seaweed, and is found in the North Atlantic basin. It is often used as packing material for shellfish. Algin is often used to help regulate bowel function.



Side Effects

Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach discomfort, stomach pain.



Reactions / Interactions

Alcohol, barbiturates (like phenobarbital), benzodiazepines (like lorazepam), blood-thinners or anticoagulants (like aspirin, ibuprofen, warfarin), drugs that increase the amount of drowsiness (allergy drugs like Benadryl®), narcotics (like codeine), raloxifene, selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) drugs for osteoporosis, tamoxifen, drugs broken down by certain liver enzymes, herbs or supplements with similar effects.

Safety

Avoid if allergic or hypersensitive to pygeum. Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dosage

Adults (18 years and older)

Tea, infusions, liquid extract, tinctures, capsules, tablets, paste, plasters, ointment, douches, mouth rinse or gargle and alcoholic extracts for the bath have been used.

Children (18 years and younger)
