What is Burdock?

Burdock is native to Europe and northern Asia. The root is used most often in herbal preparations. More research is needed before burdock can be recommended for diabetes or any other condition.



Side Effects

Allergic skin reactions (itching, redness, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing), increased urination, dry mouth, mouth itching/swelling, slow heart rate, stomach problems, cancer, altered blood sugar, dehydration (loss of body water), hormone changes (breast tenderness), change in blood potassium and sodium levels.

Drugs for diabetes, diuretics ("water pills"), hormonal drugs (like hormone replacement therapy and birth control pills), blood thinners (like warfarin, aspirin, Motrin®), alcohol, pain relievers or anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), or herbs and supplements with similar effects.

Safety

Avoid if allergic to burdock or other plants of the Asteraceae/Compositae family (ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, daisies). Avoid if history of dehydration, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, or HIV. Stop use before surgeries/dental/diagnostic procedures. Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dosage

Adults (18 years and older)

Capsules, tinctures and tea forms are available. Burdock may be applied to the skin as a compress, although no specific dosing regimen has been established.

Children (18 years and younger)

Not enough scientific data available.
