What is Sandalwood (Santalum Album)?

Endemic in Indonesia, Australia, and the Indian peninsula, the Santalum album tree is the primary source of sandalwood and sandalwood oil. Both are used in Hindu religious ceremonies. Sandalwood is also a popular fragrance for incense and perfumes. There is insufficient evidence in humans to support the use of sandalwood for any indication. However, preliminary aromatherapy studies with sandalwood have indicated that it may have anxiolytic and stimulating properties.

Allergic reactions, dermatitis, itchy depigmented macules, photoallergy.

Barbituates, cholesterol-lowering drugs, NSAIDS and herbs and supplements with similar effects.

Safety

Avoid if allergic or hypersensitive to sandalwood (Santalum album), its constituents, or related members of the Santalaceae family. Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dosage

Adults (18 years and older)

A tea with a quarter cup dry herb has been taken by mouth for colds, flu, sore throat, and congestion.

Children (18 years and younger)
