A tribute to Lance from Kurt Anderson
Written July 9, 2010
Dear Lance,
I am writing to tell you unlike you my husband Kurt did not get a second
chance. He died Wednesday July 30th doing something he loved to do “
Ride his Bike”.
He was a long standing fan and admirer of yours. He had read your books
magazine articles and was looking forward to watching you compete in this year
Tour De France race. Last year you started your come back he went to Silver City
to watch you do the Tour De Gila- he was so excited he was able to watch and
take pictures of you warming up for the Time Trial event. See attached
pictures.
He passed away as a result of heart complications- not sure I still
understand if fully. He was a fit man just turned 51 and never felt the need to
get regular health check-ups. They said his heart was enlarged and clogged a
hereditary heart disease. Something that would have been detected with regular
cholesterol and blood tests had he done them.
He participated in the Annual Iron Horse bike race in
Circle
As a result of what has happened initially I would like to raise the
awareness of getting regular physical check-ups to the biking community. I could
prevent another family from losing someone the loved prematurely. He also was
not wearing any ID at the time which delayed us being notified etc. making it
that much more painful.
He left behind his 3 sons; Kyle 20, Kasey 15 and Karson 7. I am looking
for help in how I can raise this awareness as you have done through your
LiveStrong Foundation for what took the life of my husband I loved so dearly.
How would I start such a foundation? I had some initial thoughts; I was
thinking that I could have all cyclists recycle their worn out tires and tubes-
the proceeds from that could be used to promote health checks etc/ coordinate a
way to have all race kits have a awareness flyer- stickers or something that
would recommend them to get their annual check-ups and to know their family
health history.
Any direction from you would be appreciated. Take a look at the following
web-site to read what his many friend and family wrote about him. www.remembertheirstory.com
Select alpha search Anderson, Kurt. By the way he was wearing his yellow
Tour De France jersey that night.
I can be reached at the following e-mail kraanderson@comast.net.
I have reserved the following web ID ( www.rideontoday.org)
I was thinking the awareness could address 3 areas initially they
correspond with his initials. Physical Health, Spiritual Health and
environment
K eep the faith
R- cycle your old bike tires and tubes
A- wareness get and annual health check-up, ride with an ID
etc.
Thanks
Michelle Anderson
P.S. Good Luck in the Race
