Calpe Training Camp: Farewell
The directors saved one of the best training rides for my last. Johan ordered up six hours on the bike, logging 180km (115 miles). Yesterday’s hint of rain clouds never showed. Instead, we were blasted with the coldest wind yet. You’ll see in the pictures riders went to extra measures, and layers, to stay warm. The freezing wind was literally whistling through riders’ helmets as we rolled out at 9:30a.m.
However, there’s nothing quite like six hours on a bike to really warm you up. The pace remained fairly steady throughout the ride. Fumi Beppu pretty much nailed it describing today’s ride in his broken, but impressive English…. “Easy ride. Up, down. Up, down…and on and on!” Fun Fact: Fumy speaks Japanese, French and English.
Across the Spanish countryside, it was back to two training groups and “moderate” was the name of the game. Around the 3 hour mark, we stopped for some coffee to warm-up. Sam Bewley chatted with Chris Horner about his latest music taste, Jani shared a story about his son with another proud dad, Jason McCartney, and Steegmans had his table in a fit of laughter, as usual.
Camp drew to a close for me as we rode down Monte Pego, a drastically different experience than yesterday’s route spent racing up Pego’s 12km climb. The guys took some time to soak in the beautiful views as they descended the same unforgiving switchbacks.
Thanks again for tuning in to our daily adventures at camp. Be sure to check back throughout the season for more updates, news and behind-the-scenes exclusives. Come back tomorrow to check out all of Graham Watson's pics from camp. We are just getting started…
Until then, signing off from Calpe, Spain…
