Paris-Brussels 2010

Soissons to Brussels, 218.5km/136mi

By Cathy Mehl

Despite making the course harder in hopes of avoiding a mass sprint, it was another day for the fast men of cycling with Francisco Ventoso (CarmioOro) taking a surprising win ahead of Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil) and Stefan Van Dijk of Verandas Willems for third.  Team RadioShack’s best-placed rider was Tomas Vaitkus who placed near 15th (more results when available).  Ventoso’s victory put him in an elite club of one as the only Spaniard to capture the win in the 90 editions of the race.

Australians have dominated the race for several years, with last year going to Matthew Goss who broke a four-year winning streak owned by Robbie McEwen of Katusha.  Despite a re-designed course, McEwen figured prominently in the final, pulling hard on the last hill, but his efforts put him out of contention for the overall.

The route traveled northeast from Soissons to Brussels on a mostly flat course that gave way to several climbs near the end. Earlier in the race a breakaway of three  built a sizable advantage of ten minutes.  They were brought back in part by the work of ISD, setting up attacks by several riders including Lars Boom of Rabobank.   But in the end it all came back together and  this time a victorious Spaniard reached the tape first.
