(Waterloo, WI) – Trek Bicycle has partnered with iconic contemporary artist Shepard Fairey and his creative agency Studio Number One to design the Trek Madone 6.9 SSL that Team RadioShack will ride throughout the 2011 Tour of California. During the race, Trek will be giving away one of these very special bikes at trekbikes.com. 

The bikes, emblazoned with imagery created by Fairey and inspired by the team’s namesake, were handmade and painted in Trek’s Waterloo, WI manufacturing facility. “Working with my design agency, Studio Number One, and lead Art Director Casey Ryder, we took inspiration from RadioShack’s epic electronics legacy and iconic color scheme to create a race aesthetic conveying energy, speed, and mobility,” Fairey said. “With several avid cyclists on our team, it’s always an honor to affect the surfaces of the most technically advanced race bikes in the world and work with the top-notch Trek art and design team again.” 

During the Tour of California, Trek will be offering the chance to win one of these limited edition bikes at trekbikes.com. Registration will be available Thursday, May 12 through Sunday, May 22. 

This is not the first time Trek and Fairey have collaborated. The artist first lent his talent to a Trek Madone that cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong rode during the 2009 Giro d’Italia. In addition to designing the bike, Fairey was one of the featured contemporary artists during that year’s “Stages” global art exhibition benefiting the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the organization established by Armstrong in 1997 that serves people affected by cancer and empowers communities to take action. The foundation is now known publicly by its powerful brand – LIVESTRONG – and is a leader in the global movement on behalf of 28 million people around the world living with cancer today.
