Status Quo for The Shack

Volta a Catalunya
Stage 2: Salt to Banyoles, 182.6km/113mi
By Cathy Mehl
There were no changes on the overall general classification in stage two of the Volta a Catalunya with Team RadioShack’s Levi Leipheimer and Andreas Klöden still sitting in second and third place behind leader Paul Voss (Milram). The stage win went to sprint-wonder Mark Cavendish (HTC-Columbia) in a straight-up dash to the line, challenged by JJ Haedo (Team Saxo Bank) and Aitor Galdos (Euskaltel-Euskadi). Team RadioShack continues to lead in the Teams classification after two stages.
Team riders Daryl Impey, Tomas Vaitkus and Klöden put themselves in the thick of the action, all landing in the top twenty places for the stage.
After the stage Team Director Viatcheslav Ekimov tweeted congratulations to Cavendish and continued with “The Shack’s good. We have saved our spots on General Classification with Levi in second and Andreas in third.” Levi and Andreas are only one- and two-seconds behind Voss and will look for opportunities to move ahead in the next few days.
Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Peter Stetina (Garmin) went away early in the stage. Team RadioShack’s Jason McCartney and Bjørn Selander worked hard along with Milram and the duo were eventually brought back, setting up a mass sprint. HTC-Columbia worked hard for Cavendish and the British sprinter did not disappoint, taking the win with a great turn of speed.
Wednesday brings stage three, La Vall d’En Bas to La Seu d’Urgell at 185.9km and should be another mass sprint. Has Cavendish found his form for 2010? Never under estimate the power of the Man from Manx.
Beyond the Finish Line: Banyoles is a small city located in the province of Girona in northeastern Catalunya. It is most famous for the Lake of Banyoles, a natural lake located in a tectonic depression, and was used for all rowing events in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
