Tour de France Stage 1: Rotterdam to Bruxelles

Plain Stage
Sun, July 4—starts at 1145 local time
About Stage 1
By Chris Brewer
A day simply guaranteed for the proverbial “thundering herd” sprint finish. While nerves will be twitchy inside the 198 rider peloton, the day’s escape should go out early enough to let things settle down. As the pack approaches Brussels the roads are wide, and the finish is a barely uphill finale over 1km long. Should be a very exciting ending!
About Bruxelles
By Rachel Horn
Bruxelles has been a stage town eleven times, and returns this year for the first time in 18 years in honor of Belgian cyclist and five-time Tour winner Eddy Merckx's 65th birthday.
Bruxelles is both the capital of Belgium and the European Union. An international metropolis, Bruxelles has the highest number of diplomats and journalists in the world, and is also the location of 1,400 international organizations and 2,000 foreign companies.
The Tour route—a plain stage from Rotterdam going between land and sea— will take cyclists through Bruxelles via the Avenue de Bouchout, and the avenues de Meysse and du Parc Royal, where they will pass by the Laeken cemetery and the historical Royal Domain, constructed in 1772. The finish line will be near the symbolic Atomium monument, built for the 1958 World's Fair.
