An Olympic gold and silver medalist, he was awarded the title of Russian Cyclist of the Century in 2001. Viatcheslav won two Olympic gold medals in the track-team pursuit in Seoul (1988) for the USSR and in the road-time trial in Sydney (2000) for Russia. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Viatcheslav won the silver medal for Russia in the men's road individual time trial, losing to American Tyler Hamilton. Besides that, he was seven-time world champion and won 77 races as a professional rider including the Zürich Championship and stages in Tour de France and Tour of Spain. Viatcheslav started and finished 15 Tours de France, tying with Lucien Van Impe for the second-most Tour finishes. Ekimov joined the US Postal Team in 1997. He was important to five Lance Armstrong's Tour victories, both on the flats and in the mountains. Viatcheslav was a key force in the winning team time trials. After the Spring Classics in 2006, he joined the staff of Johan Bruyneel’s management team.
