Stage2: Brussels to Spa, 201km/125mi

In another crash-filled stage at the 97th Tour de France, a new race leader emerged after a successful daylong break put Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step) on the top step of the podium.  Although the biggest group of riders rolled in under soft-pedaling conditions to protest the unsafe conditions of the stage, the yellow jersey was awarded to Chavanel who know holds a massive 2:57 gap to former leader Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank.).  Team RadioShack’s Lance Armstrong remains the best-placed rider in fifth place with Levi Leipheimer just beind in 8th.

After yesterday’s flat-fest, today will see the first testing of climbing skills with five lower rated climbs in the second half of the stage.  The final Cat 3 effort 12km before the line could either enable the escape to stay away, or possibly launch an attack from the field, but more likely it will once again be a bunch sprint as everyone still has plenty of nervous energy and fresh legs.

Although this stage starts out flat, the last portion of it becomes hillier, as bikers climb into the Belgian town of Spa. This is the second time Spa has served as a stage town for the Tour.

Spa, a French-speaking town located in the Liege province, has been occupied since the Roman times. The name "Spa" comes from Latin words meaning "fountains" and "bubbles"—quite fitting, as many mineral and iron springs can be found near the town. Throughout history Spa has attracted many visitors seeking the health benefits of the springs, and today, in addition to visiting those thermal resorts, tourists come to Spa to see its casino (the oldest in the world) and museums, as well as to hike, mountain bike and golf.
