Tour de Suisse
Stage 2: Ascona to Sierre, 167.5km/104mi
By Cathy Mehl
In a straight up sprint to the line, Heinrich Haussler (Cervelo Test Team) had the legs to come around a field of hard charging riders to claim his first victory after a race-ending fall last month in the Tour of California. Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil) opened up the sprint with 150m to go and was joined by Pablo Urtasun Perez (Euskaltel – Euskadi), but a patient Haussler came off the wheel of Perez to earn the victory in Sierre.
Tour de Suisse
Stage 1: Lugano (ITT) 7.6km/4.7mi
By Cathy Mehl
With many top Tour de France riders finishing up their last race before July at the Critérium du Dauphiné, the rest of the pack lined up for a 7.6km prologue in the opener at the Tour de Suisse. Top honors went to world champion and last year’s race winner Fabian "Spartacus" Cancellara in a nail-biting finish that gave him only one second over Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas) and 3-seconds to German Tony Martin (HTC – Columbia). Top honors for Team RadioShack went to Levi Leipheimer at 18-seconds off the pace. The Swiss champion wear the first race leader’s jersey.

It’s the 78th edition of the Tour de Suisse (Tour of Switzerland), one of two traditional final tune up races for those looking to do well in France next month. Team RadioShack has squads committed to both the Critérium du Dauphiné and Suisse with riders from each roster making sure that they are showing they are on track for the big dance starting July 3. Suisse features two bookend Individual Time Trials, several opportunities for the sprinters, and lots of climbing particularly in stages 6 and 7 (but that’s not the only place). It will be a week where the world’s media looks to see just how on-form 7-time Tour champion Lance Armstrong is. But there is plenty of talent for him to match up against, especially from Saxo Bank with the likes of Cancellara and the Schleck brothers. Here’s what you have to look forward to, lots more to come!
The Team line-up for the next race:
Tour de Suisse (Sui), June 12-20, 2010
Riders: Lance Armstrong, Andreas Klöden, Levi Leipheimer, Jason McCartney, Dmitriy Muravyev, Yaroslav Popovych, Gregory Rast & Gert Steegmans
Directors: Johan Bruyneel & Viatcheslav Ekimov
