There is only one Martini, and it is made with Gin. Cool, crisp, refreshing.
Vary the Vermouth to your taste, but if you don't add any you are missing a great deal. Olive or Lemon twist? Take your pick; Olives leave a richer taste, the Lemon adds zing.

The word martini is a nice term for gin, ice cold, with nothing added. You can add vermouth if you want, but keeping some in the fridge is close enough for me.
