Uretheral stricture is a medical condition characterized by the unusual narrowing of the urethra, the thin tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. Though the symptoms of this condition are similar in both men and women, men are more likely than women to develop urethral stricture because they have a significantly longer urethra, according to the Department of Urology at the University of Washington. Men who develop urethral stricture symptoms should consult a physician to ensure receipt of appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Urethritis

Overview
Urethritis occurs when the urethra gets infected and inflamed. The urethra is a canal that carries urine from the bladder. For males, it can be found inside the penis. It also carries semen and sperm out of the penis. In females, the urethra only carries urine from the bladder.

There are many causes of urethritis. Irritation by substances, such as creams, lotions, soap and spermicides can cause urethritis. This type of urethritis can not be spread to anyone else. Sexually transmitted diseases, like gonorrhea and chlamydia, can also cause urethritis and can be spread to sexual partners.

Symptoms
A lot of males can have urethritis but no symptoms at all. If you have any of the symptoms below, you should see a health care provider immediately as complications can develop if the urethritis is left untreated. You should also discontinue sexual intercourse until after you receive medical treatment. Females can also get urethritis but the condition is called a urinary tract infection (UTI).

The signs and symptoms of urethritis are:

•	Painful or burning urination
•	Itchiness
•	Pus or mucous coming out of your penis (look for a noticeable stain on your underwear)
•	The opening at the end of your penis may be stuck together by the dried secretions
•	The opening at the end of your penis may appear red

Treatment
If there are no secretions for the health care provider to take a sample of, the doctor may insert a swab into the urethra--about 3 to 4 mm deep--in order to get a "culture" that will determine exactly what is causing the infection. The swab can cause some pain, but it is very important to do this test.

You will probably be given medication for the infection. Sometimes tests are done two weeks after treatment to make sure the infection has gone away completely.

Ask Your Physician
See your health care provider immediately if you have any of the above symptoms.

Urethritis is commonly passed from one sexual partner to another, so the safest thing you can do to limit your exposure is limit your number of sexual partners. You should also use a condom every time you have intercourse. Latex condoms are the best for preventing disease transmission, but polyurethane condoms may be used if you have a latex sensitivity. Avoid condoms with added coloring, flavor or lubrication if you have cause to believe that your urethritis may be chemical in origin.

Urethritis may result from a number of bacterial or viral infections, including sexually transmitted ones. If you are exhibiting the symptoms of urethritis, your doctor may prescribe trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. If it is determined that the urethritis is likely the result of sexual activity, you may be given a ceftriaxone injection for gonorrhea and a prescription for oral azithromycin or doxycycline for chlamydia. You will need to inform your sexual partners about your urethritis, so they can be tested and treated as well. If you are a woman with recurring urethritis, you may be prescribed low doses of antibiotics to take on a daily basis. However, if you are post-menopausal, your doctor may prefer to prescribe estrogen creams or suppositories.

The main symptom of urethritis is one of burning and pain upon urination. This symptom is most effectively treated with the use of pain relievers, particularly the drug pyridium, which works on the urinary tract specifically. If you cannot get an immediate appointment with a health care provider, you may relieve some of the symptoms by consuming a lot of water to flush the bacteria out of your system. You can also use the over the counter remedies like AZO Standard, which contains the active ingredient phenazopyridine hydrochloride.
