My name is Dana Sanders, former NFL running back turned fitness trainer. We are here today in Seattle, Washington at beautiful Alki Point with LIVESTRONG.com. Today's question, stretching for heavy weight lifters. I usually don't recommend stretching prior to a workout especially for heavy weight lifters. Because basically what happens when you stretch you are tearing your fibers apart. You are actually breaking it down. And your workout continues to break them down even further. So if you are a heavy weight lifter and you want to stretch you stretch when the workout is over. For instance, if you are doing heavy leg curls, when you are done you want to stretch out your hamstrings. So usually what I do is just you know put my hands, put my feet apart about shoulder width. Go down and put my hands on the ground. And I'll just go from side to side just to stretch out my hamstrings when I'm done. And it's also important to stretch out your chest when you are done like a real heavy chest workout. So what you want to do is put your hands out or put your hands in some position where you have to bring them back and keep your body at a 90 degree angle. So if you can get your arm back as far as you can but yet keep your body straight you are stretching out your chest. And these are my tips for stretching for heavy weight lifters.
